Dr. Hunley is very knowledgeable on poetry and probably more so than any of the other professors. His class is a very relaxed atmosphere. He is a bit awkward at first which was surprising to me because I had gone to a reading of his a few years before and he seemed very confident. It is a little difficult to approach him because of the awkwardness, but he is very helpful on suggesting how you can improve your poems. He gives everyone an equal amount of attention. He is a little bad at telling you the details of assignments, for example: he sent out an email on how he wanted the first collection of poems organized, on the day it was due and he did give some of those details out the week before. However, he kind of rambled those instructions so I couldn't catch everything he told us that day. Which was the whole point for the email that was sent out too late. Next time I will email him and not bother waiting for him to remember.

Dr. Tom is overall a good teacher. You will have a quiz almost every class period for the first few weeks of the semester but it actually helps your grade in the long run, they are very easy. You do not have any exams in the class, just 3 exams and 1 exam that you will write with a partner for your final. Each essay counts for more points than the previous one. Dr. Tom is very helpful in giving feedback if you need help with the essays. Attendance is mandatory, he takes it at the start of each class and if you miss more than 5 unexcused classes you automatically fail the course. Usually you are missing a quiz and valuable information as it is.

Dr. Tom is an alright professor, he looks like Toby from The Office (for you Office fans). But you take quizzes over the chapters you read. They aren't that bad, but you need to make sure that you understand the reading passages. You have to write 4 essays, which are alright. Your forth essay, you write with a partner. For your third essay, you meet with Dr. Tom and he will help you make your essay better. Overall, he is very helpful when you need help.

This class was easy. I took it as a summer term. We had to read 3 short stories a day which was kind of a lot and take a quiz over it the following day but it was cake. We had a class discussion over what we read and then took the quiz. Professor Hunley was a great teacher! There was only one paper at the end of the semester and it was cake!

Dr. Tom has gone out of his way to review some of my work outside of class and return it promptly with advice and possible revisions. I really appreciate the fact that he makes us workshop regularly with our peers because that responsibility keeps me producing pieces when I woule otherwise slack off. Dr. Tom is enthusiastic and gets the class involved. I recommend this class.

This is one of the easiest English classes I have ever taken. It's like being in middle school again. All he does is give quizzes over the readings and then put you in groups. You watch movies over the books you read. It's a little too easy especially for an English major. I don't think he really knows what he's talking about. He's very weird and awkward but also extremely conceited because he's a published poet. I would recommend this class to someone who just needs the gen ed credit and not an English major.

I had Dr Hunley for English 200 as well and figured he wouldn't be too bad for English 300. WRONG. We started the semester by reading a novel and taking quizzes about it. The quizzes werent terrible, but this is a writing class, not a literature class! The first 2 papers that we wrote were 4 to 7 pages relating to the book and our lives. Personally I thought they were a waste of time considering we were supposed to be learning how to write in our major. The 3rd paper was 3 to 6 pages about how writing is done in our major. and the final was a 10 to 15 page paper of your choice relating to your major. Dr. Hunley makes things a lot more difficult then they need to be. Oh, and when he gives a length to papers, he expects it to be on the higher end.

I took this as a summer course, which made it much more intense than it would be otherwise. We looked at a lot of poetry in our class, which is understandable because Dr. Hunley is a poet by trade. The assignments were informative and every student had an opportunity to have their thoughts considered. I found Dr. Hunley to be a generally nice man who was more than willing to help if needed. I would recommend Dr. Hunley to anyone who has to take this class.

weird guy; on the first day he sat there and stared at the class for a good 10 minutes with the worst smile you've ever seen.
no sense of humor.
no common sense.
he's basically a self-proclaimed poet who couldn't hack it. therefore he "teaches" to put food on the table as his writing sure as hell doesn't.
easy class, terrible professor.

I took this class in the May session. It was really great. the books are required, there was reading every night and a quiz the next day over the reading. we watched alot of films and had a quiz over each. there was one paper we had to write about a collection of essays, which was very easy!! it seems like a lot of work but the class only lasted three weeks, so it was great. He was a good teacher overall, I would take him again!!

Mr. Hunley -- oops, I mean Dr. -- is just another bitter academic who teaches because he can't do (PhD in CREATIVE WRITING anyone?) His classes, much like his poetry, are a joke, and you can often catch him counting syllables on his fingers like a first grader. He's a slave to form without an ounce of creativity in his weasel-like frame. He required my class to buy his book.
Dr. Tommy is an insecure prude. Avoid his classes like he's avoided success.

Dr. Hunley is a great teacher. He really cares about his students. You DO have a quiz at every class meeting, which is how he takes attendence. So definitely go to class, although the quizzes aren't hard at all if you do the reading that is assigned. You will need the assigned books. As long as you pay attention, do the assigned reading, and go to class then you should be fine. There is also a presentation as well as a 3-5 page essay. The class is quite reasonable, so I would reccomend Hunley for English 200

Dr. Tom is definitely the most demanding writing professor in the English department, so it makes sense for him to teach this capstone course. He assigns a pretty daunting semester-long writing project, and you'll get to pick your poison: poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction. While the material seems a little overwhelming, the class structure is actually very laid-back and even enjoyable. The majority of classes are set up as workshops, where you basically sit in a circle and discuss/critique work.
In my opinion, Dr. Tom is one of the toughest graders I had at Western, but that just made me more determined; it depends on your attitude, I guess. He's always available to meet with outside of class to discuss how to improve your writing, and I highly recommend taking advantage of that.
Overall, this is a course that you'll either sink or swim in; you have to do the work to pass. By the end of the semester, Dr. Tom will make you see what you're really capable of after 4 years at WKU.

Dr. Hunley provides an opportunity to explore, understand, and apply the elements of writing poetry in a creative and open atmosphere. He is a great teacher. I've enjoyed this class even we're learning about subjects that I don't normally enjoy. He's made it fun, interesting, and beneficial. The class was innovative and immensely more helpful than other creative writing classes I have taken. His off-the-wall sense of humor is refreshing and his curious assignments always pique my interest and keep me rolling.

The course is not a problem; it is what it is and you have to take it. I just didn't like him. He wasn't very approachable. He seems like he might be but if you have to talk to him for more than a few minutes he seems really uncomfortable. I don't get how a teacher can be uncomfortable interacting with students. Also at times it seems you can't reason with the guy. He already knows what he is going to do so if you have a problem, don't even bother trying to explain it to him. Apparently your life is only about coming to school and all outside things bear no weight.

Dr. Hunley is a great, great professor. Regardless of what lazy, narrow-minded, immature people on here may say about him, he's a great teacher and even cooler guy. The class is challenging, but he gives you the option of choosing your desired genre of writing which makes it easier. Class time is laid-back but you can't get behind because it's nearly impossible to catch up. He knows his stuff about writing and is very helpful especially if you're writing poetry. I love this class and I'm glad Dr. Hunley is teaching it.

Tom Hunley is a weasel, plain and simple. If you like to think outside the box or write about "questionable" subjects, don't take this boy. He doesn't encourage or nurture his students. He plays favorites with the kids who blatantly kiss his ass and buy his books, which he self-publishes because no major press wants him. If you don't believe me, check his reviews on Amazon.com -- all written by students and his wife.
He's a miserable person who is slowly realizing his writing career isn't going anywhere. He takes it out on those students of his with strong, unique voices -- something he lacks.
Highlights of the class: watching him squirm at his desk, counting syllables and meter, trying to cram his poetry into some obsolete, poetic form like the sestina.-->

Dr. Hunley was a very nice man that was willing to help students with their work if they needed it. There were no actual tests in this class you just had papers to write. You write 4 papers over the semester and the fourth one is the final. In this class you have writings that come from essays once or twice a week that you must post on blackboard but you do not have much homework. I loved the class discussions and would probably take him again!

Dr. Tom doesn't know a damn thing about the craft of writing. He is arrogant and really doesn't want to have anything to do with any genre outside of poetry. That's supposed to be his area of expertise, but just about anyone who has ever taken him for writing knows better. His class is a waste of time and it is boring as hell. You'd have a better time waiting for a snow storm in July.

The first day of class, he told us that we would have a quiz almost every time we met. Don't get scared!! The quizzes were all pretty easy, as long as you read the assignments. He doesn't take attendance, but uses the quizzes to tell if anyone missed class. The tests were easy, too.........as long as you read. I loved this class, Dr. Tom was really cool, and would always make everyone laugh. Take this class if you want to actually have a good time in lit.

Dr.Tom does not need to be teaching an english composition class. He is a creative writting professor. Our thesis paper had to be written as a play like format. How many folks are going to be able to use that for their major? Dr.Tom did not give any tests just 5 essays. His grading scale was fair but not very well stated on the syllabus. It was a good class over all I'm still just a wee bit upset about our thesis :(

I enjoyed this class. We wrote four papers plus the final. They ranged between 4 and 12 pages. The final is the longest one. All the papers are very different and require thought. I liked the class because I like writing, if you don't, you might not like it. We didn't have any formal tests, just a few small assignments and the papers. the first half of the class we posted reading responses on blackboard and averaged about two a week. Hunley has a little conference with every student about each paper where he reads what you have written so far and gives you pointers...that helps a lot! But even so, sometimes you feel a little lost on some of the assignments, but not too bad. The final paper requires a lot of thought. I took the honors course and he expected a little more from us. If the paper was supposed to be 3-5 pages, he expected it to be close to 5. Overall, pretty good class.

Dr. Hunley is a great addition to the English department at WKU. He is extremely approachable and wants to get to know his students. This class is one of the classes in which I truly learned a great deal. Basically, the class is student lead, groups of 2 present presentations on poets from the text. Dr. Hunley throws in information when needed. He has many cool anecdotes and inside information on the poets. There is 1 midterm, 2 papers (based on the poets you present) 2 presentations, and a final. Dr. Hunley sets up this class to be easy, but you really learn alot. Dr. Hunley is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. Not only is he nice but he also writes really great poetry. Definitely take Dr. Tom if you have the chance!!!

No Tests or reading novels in this class .
Losts of posting online responces, but they are not hard.
Writing alot of papers, basically all we do in class.
Not hard though just effort must be put forth, but not hard.
Professor is very nice, and understanding, will take late work.
No final, but you have to turn in a portfolio at the end of the semester.
