He doesn't require you to buy a book, in fact one isn't even listed on the course requirements. However he DOES NOT have power points or lecture notes to post on BlackBoard, he doesn't use it, especially not for grades. He hands out packets of information to relate the lectures to, but it is mainly an auditory learning class. He does repeat things but the only catch is if you don't understand it in class and do not take adequate notes you won't understand. My advice go to every class, oh and his grading scale is different 87% is an A.

Dr. crews is a nice teacher and will help if needed but he presents lectures by talking. No power points or notes later on blackboard so it is hard to stay on track and pay attention not to mention how boring this class is. Beyond boring he talks you write so don't miss a sentence. Not a bad guy though if you can pay attention then you will pass, just be bored along the way. Also he doesn't require a book which is nice.

I took this course online and found it to be very easy and fun. There are 4 lessons and 2 SAM projects (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) every two weeks. The lessons are all video with some supplemental reading online. I often waited until the last week and still got everything done in plenty of time. The final is cumulative but he gives you a list of the most important things to study. Overall, I would definitely recommend this professor. Take the online course if you are super busy and need to fit in a class in your spare time.

I took this class as a web course. It was pretty much the easiest class I've ever had. Your modules last two weeks long, with two online projects due on Friday and the test on Sunday. I would wait until Friday afternoon, do both the SAMs in less than 3 hours; then wait until Sunday about noon and watch all the lectures from the week, followed immediately by the test. I missed one of the tests and two of the projects and still got an A. I highly recommend Dr. Crews.

Be prepared to work very hard in this class if you have no programming experience. The course starts off fairly easy with Visual Logic but at after the midterm when you switch over to Visual Basic, this class becomes rather difficult. Programming is not easy unless you're a natural. His tests are not that bad if you take the microexams many times; they are the same questions used on the tests. The final is worth 25% of your grade and is very hard, however you get the chance to retake one of the three tests at the end of the semester. This opportunity alone gave me the chance to go from a C to a B. The only things you don't get a chance to do over are the weekly portfolios, so make sure to do them to the best of your ability.

Crews is horrible. Im a CS student and took this course for the hell of it. CIS 226 should not have 'Intro' tacked onto the front of it simply because of the way he goes about grading. The course is presented in a introductory fashion but come test time you need to be an expert. Capable of finding bugs in small scripts in a short amount of time. The core intent of this class is supposed to be to teach you a general understanding of progamming and some slight skills in VB. You would want to believe that portfolios (actual programming) would make up a large margin of your grade. It doesn't. You will be required to learn crap that pretains little to your ability to program. If you were to get Cs on all the tests yet ace the portfolios you would still have a C in the class no matter how you do the math. To be frank: this class is bullshit.

If this course is manditory for you then I am sorry. You have a choice between blankenship who I heard don't take and Crews. Dr. Crews II is all and all pretty good id say I just did not like the fact that he took forever to grade assignments the entire semester. The FINAL is cumulative and I took it yesterday. It is over chapters 6,7,8,9. STUDY THE ONLINE STUDY GUIDES!!! I credit that to me doing as well as I did which I got a 75 on the final and I am almost sure to pull a B for the class.
If you have a problem with the logic programming portfolio assignments I heard if you go to the labs he will help you TREMENDOUSLY SO GO!! but I never went to the labs.
Also for the other test study the online study guides.

Thad Crews' CIS 226 is rediculas. I've taken this class at other institutions and recieved a B with good reccomendations on my work. This class is concentrated on Portfolios and Exam grades(80%). The exams are true false and are so specific that you often are unsure of what they are even asking and are worded purposely to confuse you. Had Mr crews decided to grade my portfolios before the last few weeks of class some of us may have decided to withdrawl.
Honestly he doesnt have to teach can he not grade? My experience with mr crews shows him to be irresponsible and unresponsive. If it wasn't for the fact he wrote the book hed probably be fired in any other institution.

The course relies on your self motivation to do the work. The material is not that difficult or hard to understand, there is just a lot of work that goes into it. The course was basically online - downloading the video lectures and uploading your portfolio - but Dr.Crews was always in the lab during the specified class time for help. You are only required to come to the three test dates. Overall, it is a good class and Dr.Crews is a good teacher who wants you to succeed and will truly help you do so.

This class was fun to take, but it requires alot of time and work. If you don't enjoy spending time writing code for programs then this is not a class you would like. But this was the first programming class for me, others that have had it before should not have a problem. This is basically an internet class now. You can come to class during its time period and ask questions about your programming portfolios due every week. Crews is a cool guy and will give you pointers, but you must ask, cause he will not just tell you. Study and work hard and you will do fine. Over all Crews is a great teacher.
The final is cumulative, but thats only the final four chapters 6-9 that it will cover, since chapters 1-5 are introducing you to the material.

I took the section of this course that only lasted a few weeks. It was very easy to me. You just have to study the online study guides, and when you go in to take the exams they are exactly the same.... very easy stuff. There are a couple assignments due at the end, but that's it. I recommend the shorter section of this course, and I recommend Crews.

He is a wonderful professor. He teaches programming from a problem solving perspective where every other programming class I have had was more memorizing code than anything. If you put time into the course on a regular basis you should have no problem.

First of all, I marked Moderate for difficulty of course, but it was easy for me, I just saw 2 of my friends do horrible in it though. Crews II is an easy enough teacher, you just have to be willing to put forth the effort. Programming is not easy, but if you know what you're doing (i.e. programmed before) or are willing to jump right in, I would definitely recommend him. I had fun in the class, and learned how to write games in VB.NET. Overall, I would say take this class, especially if your major requires it (CIS/CS/maybe others).

This course requires a LOT of work. Dr. Crews is a pretty good teacher but is a tough grader! You can become very easily lost in the class if you fall behind at all. There are many programs to write and portfolios due each week. If you don't like to study tremendously or have any difficulty with problem solving, do not take this course! I took it for the CIS minor, but it is no longer required for the minor so I withdrew.
