I am an honors student, this class is CRAZY. You have so many papers to write and articles to read. Then, in the end you get a 'B'. He tells the entire class he does not give As on papers. However, he is a nice person, just a HORRIBLE grader. Perfectly good 4.0s were ruined due to this class. Keep that in mind.

Dr. Hovet is great and combined with people willing to participate in classroom discussions this makes for a fun class! Even if you're not a film major you will learn so much and it's an easy enviroment to learn in because every class meeting we sit in a huge circle. The workload is fine. There's plenty of writing so if you hate writing don't take this class. Dr. Hovet is always open to suggestions and he's awesome overall. I'd definately recommend his class!

This course was probably my toughest class this semester as far as papers go. One would think that an intro to an English major course wouldn't be too hard, but that's not the case with this one. The hardest thing was an 8-12 page research paper that we had to do, and it was seriously the toughest paper that I've ever done in college.
Besides that, the class is overall fairly enjoyable. A lot of work though. Dr. Hovet is funny and a good professor--you can tell that he's passionate about his students and about being an English teacher.
I still would recommend him, because you will learn a lot! Just be ready for this to NOT be an easy A.

Ted Hovet is a good teacher. I did not get a good grade in his class because I didn't put out much effort because it was so easy. You write a little in his class, but there are no tests. A few quizzes are given out over the books you are supposed to read. Make sure you read them. There's only two. The class is mainly based on discussion. Hovet is an easy-going and funny guy. I wish I'd put out more effort and taken the class a little more seriously because it shouldn't be hard to get a good grade with him, if you try.

This is a great course to take to try to figure out if the subject of English is for you. Even though I decided against it after this course, I felt smarter for taking it and nearly compelled out of the intrigue that Dr. Hovet sparks through readings, discussion, poems of the day and especially writing. There are papers, but, hey, it's English and this sort of thing should be expected. A great class with a great professor.

Dr. Hovet is an amazing professor. He's cheerful, makes jokes all the time, and has a readily-apparent love for film. Really, I've got nothing bad to say about him. He doesn't grade easy, but he doesn't grade hard either -- really, he grades as fairly as I've seen any professor grade. I never got a 100 on anything, but with appropriate effort, I got an A. The class itself was an odd format -- every week, you'll watch a movie on Tuesday and have a short essay/review about it ready for Thursday, as well as thoughts and opinions on different aspects of the movie. Thus, classroom participation effects your grade. The strangest part, though, was trying to take notes and read subtitles at the same time -- the first movie, it was difficult, but you quickly get used to it. He'll even hand out guides to which character is which and the like to help you out with names and the like. Just, don't walk out on A Page of Madness, that's just not cool.

I am currently in this class, and I can honestly say it is one of my favorites. Professor Hovet is an amazing professor who honestly cares about the students and tries to make each class as interesting as possible.
He grades differently than most professors, on papers, but i really like the grading system. It is a system he would have to explain, not me. Over all, he is a wonderful professor. I HIGHLY recommend him.

Dr. Hovet is a very good teacher. The biggest part of the course is the Research Paper. It is supposed to be 15 pages, but that's really no big deal. He helps you a lot, though. He makes sure you pick a topic that you will enjoy, and helps you through the whole process. There are due dates spread out through the semester, so it's not all piled up at once. He makes it easier, and doesn't leave you hanging to do the whole thing on your own.
I'm an English major, and while I didn't like a lot of the articles we read, because they were outside of my academic interests, the point of the course is to expose you to those different disciplines, and it turned out to be very beneficial for me. In fact, this class was one reason I chose to become an English major.
We didn't really have a final--it was optional. He threw out one paper because we ran out of time to discuss it. The final was either to write that nixed paper, or to revise a previous paper, or nothing at all, if you were satisfied with your grade.
Dr. Hovet is a very good teacher, and a very laid-back man. He was easy to talk to, so that made the class a lot better, and made the paper process easier.
I highly recommend you taking him for any English or Film class you have that he teaches.

This man is awesome!! He is always ready to begin class at the appointed hour and usually lets you out a few minutes early. There are no tests in his class, but there is ALOT of writing. You write papers over what you read in the textbook. There is no mid-term but there sort of is a final. For the "final" you have to write about something over you major. My major is education, my paper was a piece of cake to write. Although, there is a requirement for how long it is... 15 pages. But trust me, it's not that bad. He is a great professor, he is always there to listen to you, and answer any questions that you may have. TAKE HIM!

ENG 299 is still in the process of its evolution, so what is required in the class may change. Dr. Hovet didn't give test, just a few quizzes over the reading. We had to read two novels, and write papers about both. It wasn't extremely hard, you just have to make sure you read. I did learn a lot about the English major and its constituent parts. Dr. Hovet did a good job of facilitating the class.

Dr. Hovet is a great professor. He cares about his students and has a passion for teaching. You have to write a paper for each week over articles you read, but it's really not that bad. And the final really isn't a final, it's a writing exercise. I learned a lot of helpful tips about writing college papers not only for english, but for all my classes.

Dr. Hovet is a great teacher. He is really interesting and fun with his antecdotes of pop culture.
However, this class is by no means an easy A. You really have to think, do the reading, and be involved in the class. It's taught tag-team style and a journal is due every week. You are graded by check minuses, checks, and check pluses, so if you want a good grade you really have to be involved in the class. There are 2 tests, a midterm and a final that are all essay. You get the prompts before hand but they are still difficult.

Dr. Hovet is an awesome guy. Hes pretty easy going and enjoys what he teaches. His class mostly consist of reading and then a discussion the next day in class. You will have 4 papers that are due in the semester. Which is like a paper every 2-3 weeks. They aren't hard at all to write.

Dr. Hovet may have his PHD in English, but the man's true passion lies in the cinema -- and it shows. Dr. Hovet makes this an exciting, informative class, full of enlightening discussions and witty banter. I mean, where else could you find out about how Hollywood makeup artists cover Julia Robert's upper gum with peanut butter in order for her to deliver award-worthy performances? She should be a shoe-in for the sequel to Hot to Trot.
Um, all jokes aside, Dr. Hovet makes this an enjoyable class. You certainly won't regret fighting The Man to get into it.
Run down of work: weekly journals, three papers, one presentation, a mid-term, and a final. The final exam is very tricky, featuring a barrage of essay questions which will leave your knuckles raw for weeks on end. Dr. Hovet's fair in his grading of journals and papers, though he does expect quality; many (including myself) were vexed at times as to what we could do to get that sought after grade. Just apply yourself and all will be good.
My only complaint is that most of the presentations (mine included) generally went a little too long -- taking away, unfortunately, to Dr. Hovet's lecture time. Come on, kids. Let the man speak.
Oh yeah. And the selection of movies was generally good -- though I could have done without Pirates of the Carribean. But as Ted would say, it represents an important facet of Hollywood cinema we have now done studied.

I hated this class. Yes it was fun reading the material, but class was boring. You sit in a circle and discuss what you read. For those who hate to talk in front of people, don't take this class. He calls on you to see what you thought. There are several papers, several quizes, several interpretation excercises and one exhausting fnal. All Essays. Overall, its easy...but as a professor, I did not like him very much. He is understanding in some aspects, but I did not like how he forced people to participate.

Dr. Hovet is an approachable and organized professor. He required the book Quick Access, but I only used it to refer to when I wrote the research paper. There are no tests, only transactive type papers: summary, synthesis and other types of academic writing, of course a research paper (something like 8-10 pages long). He sets a high standard and will not grade your paper an A unless it is excellent. This is both frustrating and rewarding--the class is not an easy A, but if you can get an A, it is a real credit to your writing skill.

Face it, you have to take this class, so you might as well take it with a good teacher. Dr. Hovet is awesome. I did not like the class at first, and it is a lot of work. However, by the end of it, I realized that everything he does works and you get a lot out of it. Be prepared to write a lot of papers, including a term paper. It's not as bad as it sounds and turned out to one of my favorite classes that semester.
