If you are an A student and willing to work hard, getting an A is within reach. In this case, working hard means studying for weekly quizzes and the midterm and final and doing the occasional homework assignment. It sounds easy, but Dr. Hoyt is a very hard grader. You'll come out of his class knowing your stuff, but the amount of effort necessary seems ridiculous when one considers that this class is only one credit hour. In short, don't expect an easy A.

This guy! Wow, yeah I made an A but I freakin had to work for that grade! I am not the one who likes sliding through classes anyway, I try hard but this class was insane. He tried to make it harder then it was and the midterm was ridiculous! He says that there are no tricks and no gimmicks on any of the tests or quizzes but be ready. I will give you a few hints. Do good on all the quizzes!! He usually has 12 and you drop the lowest 2. If you do well on these, they add up to one test grade! The midterm is hard but don't drop the class just because you did bad on it. The final is a lot easier and it is the main reason why I made an A. I don't have any comparison for the other Lab instructors but if you have a light load then take this guy because he is interesting but hard!

Hoyt is pretty hard- he demands a bit, but he puts in the effort as well. This is a course you really need to study for- you gotta know your stuff, especially the problems, but if you do, it's pretty easy, 'cause he formats it like the labs. If you work hard, he'll take care of the rest and make sure you get a good grade. BUT YOU HAVE TO WORK! ...and study. he'll check stuff with you if you contact him, like email, so that helps, too.

This course should be taken only if you are very serious about medicine, dental, or histology in general. It is probably the most difficult class and lab that I have ever taken and it will kill you if you aren't interested in the subject.

If you want to find out how challenging a class can be, and get prepped for medical or dental school, this is the course for you. This was a great experience, but also one of the very hardest classes I have ever taken. Dr. Hoyt will bend over backwards to help you, and makes the class enjoyable.
Take this one, and see what you're made of.

Don't take Bob if you aren't willing to work for your grade. As he says, "This isn't Mrs. Magillicutti's Junior High Class, this is College."
This man is hard, but he is also great. Just don't wear a hat, or fall asleep. He'll get you every time. Overall, I believe he's tied for the best Bio professor at WKU.

Dr. Hoyt is an awesome teacher! He is always smiling and excited to teach. I only studied two nights before the test just like any other science class, so I don't understand why so many students complain. The class is completely fair, and the students walk away retaining much more information than students from any other class will. Dr. Hoyt is by far the best teacher I have ever had! Western's science department will never find a profesor that could even come close to replacing Dr. Hoyt when he retires at the end of the year.

I just wanted to address the vicious statement previously written about Dr Hoyt. Whoever wrote that was not a disciplined student and NOT a pre-professional student. These classes are not suppose to be easy. Hoyt isn't suppose to be holding your hand. He is suppose to be preparing you for a career or preparing you for the MCAT, etc. And he does a DAMN good job of it. I have learned so much from him. Yes, he is a tough teacher, but I am more prepared for Med-school because of him. He is doing his job and doing it well. Plus, he does hold your hand a bit---he tells you exactly what is expected of you, what is on the tests, and that you can come to his office ANY time. He will go over and over the material with you until you get it. So overall, if you want to learn a lot--take Hoyt and be prepared to study a lot (that's kindof the point of college, don't you think) but if you want to breeze through--definitely take someone else.

Zoology is serious, and Hoyt is serious about Zoology. If you just want a degree and don't care about learning, then you won't like Hoyt because his goal is to educate you. Hoyt is worth the price of admission, you'll get your money's worth out of him.

Hoyt is the most knowledgable teacher I have taken so far. He definitely cares about his students and their progress. He is not for those students who don't like to study, only those who like to learn. He tells you exactly what will be on the tests, people just fail because they don't like to study that volume of material. He will help you any way he can.

Listen up children, Hoyt is a college professor, not one of your high school teachers, if you don't have what it takes to pass his class, then maybe you shouldn't be here. Too many instructors here at Western aren't cut out to teach above the high school level, but Hoyt raises the bar and makes a college course what it ought to be. If you can't handle a professor like Hoyt, maybe you should consider community college, vocational school, or a technical college. Or perhaps a career in the fastfood business. Yes, he's tough, but college isn't supposed to be that easy. If you want an easy instructor who doesn't have a clue how to teach, go take Cheatam for Human Nutrition. Otherwise, stop whinning and start studying.

Didn't like him at first, but made a "B" in the class. He isn't that bad. I've heard that he is better for lecture. Try to take another professor if you can.
