This course is very difficult. The class is so boring and very hard to listen. The tests are super hard because she makes the questions kinda tricky. I studied for hours and still hardly passed some of my tests. Most people I talk to who say they have sociology also say it is very easy for them. I think that is because I they have a different teacher. I do not recommend her at all!

Dr. Nemoto is a wonderful teacher and can be very quirky sometimes. A lot of people who I took SOC 353 with complained A LOT! They were all really ignorant students who didn't want to do work and felt that the class was unfair, even though everything was clearly outlined in the syllabus. I don't know why they didn't just drop the class, because half of them didn't even want to be there. But I digress...
If you are into Japanese culture and would like to learn more about it, this is a very interesting course that can let you in on a lot of insights in regards to the culture.

This class was pretty easy...but Dr. Nemoto drove me nuts! Her class is pointless...I didn't learn anything. I went to class long enough for her to take roll, then I would leave. To pass her tests, you will need to study a little, but this class isn't anything to sweat about.

awesome professor, very entusiastic about the subject. loves the class and there is a lot of class discussion. there is a personal presentation and a group presentation but as long as you know what you are talking about she typically gives A's just for attempting it. the tests are directly from the notes not much from the articles, but she is very lenient with grading and really fun. take her! :)

Kumiko Nemoto is an interesting professor. She suggests that you take all the notes because most of the exam questions come from notes, or readings from articles that you have to read. The main flaw with her is that she does not answer questions when people ask them...she beats around the bush and never really answers the question. The class is moderately difficult, and her tests aren't terribly difficult, you just have to study and do the reading.

This is a moderately easy class...I usually got 80's on her tests and I was never in class. Most people didn't show up....I would stay while she took roll and then leave. She does give study guides for her tests. Since I never was in class to take notes, I went through the chapters and highlighted what was on the study guides. It doesn't require a lot of studying, but some is required to pass. Sitting in class sucks...I couldn't stand to sit in there and listen to her. If you're looking for a pretty easy class that takes little studying, take her.

People really need to stop being giant asses about Dr. Nemoto's ability with the English language; if people would listen rather than coming into classes with the assumption that they won't be able to understand the foreign professor, they might be a little better off. Anyway, Dr. Nemoto's a great professor, in my opinion. She's interested in the subject up until the point where the class becomes so despondent and unresponsive that she gives up -- in 100, you can almost visibly see that happen. If you take her, for the love of god, answer a question or two for her sake, if not yours. She's TRYING to teach a class, but, in my experience, 95% of the classroom might as well have been zombies and ended up getting a crappy grade in an EASY class. Take Dr. Nemoto -- she's fun, she actually puts effort into a 100-level class, and her stories are hilarious.

Her lectures consist of powerpoint presentations, so if you learn well from that sort of thing, it's an easy class. The tests come directly from the notes and a small fraction comes from the short video clips and articles you discuss in class. She is really nice and usually energetic during class. Overall, the class was a piece of cake.

This course isn't that hard but you need to be there everyday! She will give you a quiz every now and then about the things covered in class. If you miss them you can not make them up! The test are pretty easy but a few times her answers did not match her notes. There are a lot of actual numbers and statistics you need to know and a lot of extra readings that she usually doesn't tell you a lot about and movies. Be there and listen and you'll do fine but she isn't much to help you out if you need it. I tried that and it didn't get me far. If it's your major she'll kiss your ass so hopefully it is. Don't take her. She doesn't know a lot of English words so listen close!

Ok, listen to me. All these other people that gave kumiko sad faces are obviously stupid pieces of shit. I can't say I loved this class, but I loved the fact that I never had to come, take notes, or listen. All I did was read the assigned chapters that she gives a clear STUDY GUIDE for and took the test. Got a High B all three times. This class is so sweet that you don't even have to take a final. I was never the kinda person that had motivation for class whatsoever, but i still got an A. What does that say. Just trust me, coming from an average student, take this class if you want and easy grade. btw you can make up assignments whenever you want.

Attendance is not mandatory but is a very good idea. She has pop quizes and in class work that is not announced that is very easy and helps in the end. Even if you do miss these she has a day near the end of the semester where you can make up any that you missed. Her notes are simple and it is a very easy concept (100 level class). I would take her because it is simple! She is easily understood. There shouldn't be a language barrier.

Nemoto is an ok teacher. Its hard to understand her at first, but once you're in there for a while you get the hang of her. You take notes from the overhead daily. I never used my book in there. All the notes come from the book. Doesnt take attendance, but she does give quizzes. Only 5 questions though. She give extra credit oppoutunities, if you take advantage of them. If no one comes to class but a few ppl, she'll give some then too. I thought it was easy overall.

The course was not really that difficult but she is a very bad instructor. You can barely understand a word she says and she does not explain the material very well. If you have questions about some of the materail, a lot of times she would not even understand the questions people would ask in class. I do not recommend her.

If you are a white male you have little chance of receiving an A in this course, because she will label you as an opressor of the worse sort, and she will feel the need to take you down a peg or two. I personally have never minded if a professor had strong views that they cared to express in class because those views were not typically used to grade student's work. Should you have differing thoughts or opinions from Dr. Nemoto and you are in retrospect dumb enough to express them when asked, you will find your grade suffering. The problem with this course is that it isn't really taught with an emphasis on sociological thought. The materials you read were written by authors who have lost their objectivity when writing about their topics. A large part of the reason that sociology does not get the credit that it deserves is because of people in the field like Nemoto who only see the world in (please forgive the pun) black and white and lack the ability to listen to appeal, logic, or reason. When told to provide support for an idea, I was naive enough to believe that three sources would be enough to at least justify a position. I was wrong. Perhaps the most ironic issue in the course was that we were introduced to critical thinking as though we had never used it before in course of our lives. We were told to use critical thinking and when we did against the views presented in the sources from the $80 non-refundable course packet, we were apparently wrong to do so. In the course you will be expected to given presentations at sometime. I say sometimes because you won't know when due to her unprecedented lack of organizational skills. My brother is autistic and he keeps it together better than she does. Not to mention that she doesn't have a real understanding of the resources available to her. For example, her use of blackboard is a joke. Grades are there, but nothing else like major course assignments, the syllabus, or the articles for class that cost $80 in the bookstore. So avoid this course if possible, I would recommend Social Inequality taught by Dr. Drummond if you are looking to take something centered on conflict theory.

Okay so here's the deal. DONT TAKE NEMOTO! Bitch doesn't even speak good English. The only good part of class is that you dont have to come. You basically have to learn from the book, because she can't teach. She tries to talk but she gets everything confused, here is what I think how about we hire teaches that can speak the language before they try and teach.

NEVER, EVER, EVER take Kumiko Nemoto for ANYTHING. She speaks terrible English, her thoughts are never connected, and she doesn't keep any sort of control over the class. The only saving grace of this class for me was that attendance was not mandatory, so I just studied out of the book. I'm a straight A student and had no problem recieving a C if it meant not having to sit and listen to her try to teach; it's just plain pitiful. I love sociolgy but HATE that woman!!
