Dr. Long is a nice guy and decent professor. Be prepared to read and be familiar with the notes if you are looking for an A, unless you are as familiar with the Bible as he is. His exams are brutal, I will not deceive you on that, they are 100 questions long and will be very hard if you do not attend class.
Good Luck

Dr. Long's New Testament is an excellent gen. ed. class to take. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and is glad to answer any questions.
Dr. Long posts his lecture notes on Blackboard, which is extremely helpful. You hardly need to take your own notes at all if you have his on hand. The notes are relatively easy to understand, and will guide you section-by-section through the scripture reading.
His tests are very easy: they are posted as Word documents on Blackboard and he allows you to take them at your leisure (you can use the lecture notes), usually giving 4-5 days to complete them.
There is only one second thought that you should have before taking Dr. Long's course. He is a good lecturer, but is a bit long-winded. I enjoyed his lectures, but if you don't like that teaching style, you may want to reconsider. He does make good use of the blackboard, but there is often little student discussion. He pauses for questions, though he sometimes gets in rhythm with the lecture and forgets.
Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Long.

This should not be a 100 level class. I've never been so overwhelmed with a class. The quantity of notes he gives is RIDICULOUS. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! John Long is great, nice guy, knows what he's talking about, explains things pretty well but the amount of material covered is just way too overwhelming a class. The only textbook you have is the Bible and you literally cover EVERYTHING in the New Testament and then some. You shouldn't have to do THIS much for a 100 level elective class so choose another.

Hahahahaha. This class is very very hard. Mr. Long is a nice guy but he teaches at a 300 level. Unless you are very willing to put LOTS of effort into this class, DO NOT take it. There are many notes to take and he lectures non-stop for 1hr and 20min(TR class), and it is very boring. There are 4 exams and when i say exams, they are freakin' exams...ranging from 55-75 questions long. This class is a dreadful killer and somehow i got ended up into this hellhole.(I love the Bible but not this class). There is not extra credit, homework, NOTHING!!! Do good on all 4 tests or you are done for! Good Luck and may God be by your side thru a semester with this maniac.

By no means am I doing well at all in this class thus far. We are about 2 months from the end of the 08-09 school year, and I need to achieve at least a 77% and a 78% on the next 2 exams in order to get a 70% overall in the class.
Professor Long is a total hardass. However, he has a passion for the subject he teaches and it really shows. This is an extremely entertaining and enjoyable course to take if you have any interest in the Bible, but it is also extremely difficult. I love the class and the material we cover, but his tests are deadly! There are only 4 grades for this class, which are the exams, and it's very hard to achieve even a C on the tests. Even though he gives you specific study guides, there are a few "trick" questions on his tests.
The class is very interesting and you will leave with a ton of new information melted into your brain.. But if you're not looking to be challenged, definitely take a different course. Long will completely own you.

I really liked Long's New Testament class. But it was entirely a lecture course, and you pretty much have to write everything down that he says to study for the test. Some of the concepts of his class were difficult to understand but I love learning about the bible so it was really interesting to me. Long is kind of a goofy nerdy older man who would crack the corniest jokes, and when he would read passages of the bible he would get really into it which was very amusing to me! Overall, I thought this was my favorite class thus far, but pretty much everyone in my class were failing and thought that it was unbelievably boring. So, if you are not interested in learning about the bible I would NOT suggest this class for you. There was only four grades which were all exams which made it kind of tough. The first exam was relatively easy if you did the study guide. The other ones were a bit harder, but again if you did the study guide and KNEW IT then you would do well. I would suggest this class ONLY to people who don't mind a little work and who enjoy studying the bible, because otherwise this class could be VERY difficult.

Are you f**cking kidding me? A 100 level class and I had to go through with this bulls**t? Listen guys, this is western kentucky and 100 level classes are never hard. God bless you Mr. Long but son of a b**ch!! What the f**k is your deal? Your class was a living hell and you were the reason for me not getting a 4.0. Seriously.....4 A's and a D???? if that doesnt tell you guys something about taking this pathetic class then I don't know what...His outlines are ridiculous and theres no point in going to class because when he talks he goes off on tangents like my insane grandmother...Long, if your reading this, you need to lighten the hell up. Your an extremely nice guy (extremely nice) but your not fair at all...Check yourself and think about what level class it was. I wanted an ispiring and informational class to strengthen my faith and you did none of that...Who the f*ck cares about rhetoric?
Lets Review:
1. Impossible for taking notes
2. No extra credit
3. No curves
4. Not enlightening
5. 100 class on a 800 level
6. Very few make above a C
Conclusion: Why would anyone want to take this? Studying and showing up to class had nothing to do with it. Take my word for it. I wouldn't write such a long review if I weren't serious

This class is really hard. Dr. Long is a really great guy, but there is only a handfull of people in my class right now who have recieved b's, everyone else is at a steady d. He gives you A LOT of notes in class and then outside of class will send you more. His tests are too hard pretty much ridiculous. I have heard that religious classes are the hardest ones to take, but not till after the withdraw date. I wish someone had told me sooner, so now I'm telling you...

I WOULD JUST TAKE ANOTHER CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO PUT IN ALOT OF WORK. ALOT OF WORK!!!!!!!

This course is in NO WAY an easy class, but Professor Long is very passionate about teaching it and makes it very fun to learn. This was by far my favorite class this semester, even though it was my hardest as well. It is a class you have to go to, take notes, and study for but if your interested in learning about the history of the New Testament I highly recommend taking this class.

This was by far my favorite class the semester I took it. Dr. Long is an extremely intelligent man, and provided some excellent instruction on the subject. Many students take the class assuming that it's a cakewalk, which is far from true. It's a very difficult class, but you will learn a lot. The only required text is your Bible, which you can use on your test. The test are the only grades in the class, and they are hard. If you make a C, be glad; there is a lot of difficult material presented. If you take 100, make sure you take it with Dr. Long. He's very nice and willing to help if you need it.He's simply one of the best profs at WKU.

Dr. Long is probably one of the most intelligent and nicest professors I have had at Western. BUT, let's just say his class was not the nicest. Many people have said that New Testament is way too difficult for a 100-level course and Dr. Long does not make an exception to this rule. I loved hearing his lectures because he was highly intelligent and knows his stuff, but the notes are way too much and he makes his tests to where you have to apply your own thoughts and theories to the lectures, the notes he sends you in e-mails (trust me, they're overkill too), and all of the books you have to read. It makes it literally impossible for most students to get higher than a C in his class. The worst part is that his tests are multiple choice/true false. And even though attendance isn't mandatory after the first week since his classes are so large, if you miss a class, you're pretty much screwed. I did not miss one class and I still barely passed. I would NOT recommend taking a religious studies course, including New Testament, unless you are highly knowledgable in the bible or are a RS major. If you do, take Long, he's difficult, but a nice man and great professor.

I took this class thinking it would be an easy A. I was very wrong. The tests were very hard and they were the only grades in the class. He offered no extra credit or any kind of curve. Don't bother asking him because he's not going to give in. Take notes, go to class, go to the review sessions. Make sure to be very specific when asking questions, that way if you miss it on the test you can back up your answers. You can use your Bible on the tests so if you feel comfortable with it, write notes in the Bible and use them during the test. I did like that he didn't force his beliefs on anyone, he only provided facts and when appicable several different theories.

Unfortunately, Dr. Long is retiring after this semester but Dr. Long is an incredible teacher. He is extremely patient and understanding. The actual Arabic II course is based off of the tools learned from Arabic I, building on grammar, vocabulary, and simple sentences. The Final consists of one and a half pages of translating from Arabic to English, and one-on-one's with Dr. Long to gauge reading ability.

Dr. Long is awesome, and I think he's a great guy, but his tests are difficult. True, they are all multiple choice but they are ambiguous. He doesn't take attendance, but if you miss a day of notes, you miss 2 or 3 questions on the exam. I averaged B's on the exams and I hadn't missed any class!

This is a very hard subject, so don't take it unless you're up for a challenge. Dr. Long is pretty forgiving with the class so we don't get scared off but a lot of outside review is needed to get by in this class. Tests consist of writing Arabic letters properly, identifying and correctly spelling new vocabulary words in Arabic, and dictation. The final consists of a lengthy piece of translation and an oral segment with each student and the professor.

You take A LOT of notes in this class, but they are well worth it b/c that's all you have to study for since your text book is the Bible. This is one of those classes w/ 4 exams, so make sure you don't screw up on any, or forget you have one that day b/c that sucks a lot. Anyway, he really knows his stuff and he does crack a few jokes every now and then. It was an intersting class, but we got really behind schedule b/c we talked a lot about things other than the NT.

Mr Long is awesome teacher and really knows his stuff. He is very easy going and is always open to questions. You can tell his experience and study really shows in the knowledge he presents you with. It is probably true that you'll enjoy the class more if you have some interest in the bible. His exams are fairly simple roughly around 30 questions (50 on final). He provided a study guide with notes that you should look over to do well. Every exam will build on previous exams in a sense so make sure not to get behind. You can usually do okay to miss this class and just get the notes from someone.

Now i like Dr Long a lot, i whole lot, but being the dept head and then teaching 12 hrs worth of class is alittle much for anyone in this world. Now Dr Long does decent with it but he needs to not spread himself so thin. I received an B on the first test, took the second (a take home but a hefty one at that) and then on the DAY OF THE FINAL. I get my midterm back and am informed i failed. So i walked in with a B and walked out wondering if i was going to pass. Now Dr Long, a great man, a learned man, and a prof interested in the students, but not an organized one and my final grade in the class showed that. I am to blame for my marks but i would have liked to have contested or remedied them before the last possible day. Take him hes good but stay on him to grade your stuff anf study hard.

Dr. Long is a really good teacher and I loved learning about the text of the New Testament, but there were only 3 tests and a final. I am not a test taker and averaged Cs on all my tests. There was always a lot of information to remember and no assignments to help reinforce that material and no extra credit was so ever. Dr. Long can be intimidating b/c he is so smart and he is really nice guy. This required a lot of reading and note studying for me.

As long as you can memorize a little bit in the beginning and listen well, this class should be no problem. There's always a guy in the back of class taking notes for review sessions, so if you miss a day you can get what notes he has. Dr. Long is extremely intelligent and what's more is that he's intelligent about the subject. He stays on subject and explains everything well.
