I LOVED Dr. Hagaman. At first, I didn't want to take this class with Dr. Hagaman because I heard that he makes you teach the class. He does but it's only a day and it's really not that bad at all. He really likes to hear student's opinions but only because he's generally interested in you as a person. Dr. Hagaman will work with you if you're having problems with the class and is very understanding. You do need to read for every class because sometimes he gives quizzes. Attendance is mandatory but I actually enjoyed going to this class because Dr. Hagaman makes it interesting. Dr. Hagaman is my favorite teacher and I'm trying to get in another one of his classes for next semester! TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!

The problem isn't the teacher as a person but he really does make you do alot of work in the class. You have to write alot and read alot. It seems overbearing but if you do that you'll get a B. If he likes your writing, you'll get an A
I'd advise you take english as a winter term if you do not like english

Its not a very difficult course, but Dr. Hagaman is very unclear about specific assignments.
With that aside, I absolutely love Dr. Hagaman. He is very involved with his students, and very understanding. He knows every students name, and takes interest not only in watching you succeed in his class, but also he takes an interest in your personal life. He is very available to help you, at any and all hours.
Even though he's unclear, if you ask him he will explain in further detail, he never turned down a chance to help out a student, I would definitely suggest taking him.

Great class. Great professor. It's a typical student-led discussion/group circle set-up. The required text including a style (grammar) book, one book of essays, and one on writing in general that is barely referenced although reading is assigned. This class also makes the most of blackboard. The class is broken into groups most days, and honestly, this is where I got the majority of my criticism. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, typically a small class-size, and you get to know the others in your class very well. I'd recommend the class and Dr. Hagaman to anyone of any major. You'll learn about your writing, have a good time, and, if nothing else, get some free snacks each week.

Dr. Hagaman is a wonderful professor! His ENG 300 class isn't the easiest, but it isn't the hardest either. We did alot of work and it seems like busy work until you get to the big paper. All of the skills we developed indivudually on those little assignments helped out alot when it came time to write the 10-15 page paper. He's easy to talk to and will do anything he can to help you out. He's a stickler for attendance, but if you attend class and do your best, you'll do fine in the class. No tests! There was a group project, small essays like summaries and critiques, and the final paper on which you also had to give a small presentation, but he isn't picky about it. He just wants you to share your findings with the class. The final is just an essay about what you learned in class. Really nice guy, definitely recommended!

So You look through these evaluations and you see all green faces...except mine. Well I dont know what those people were smokin b/c this guy is crazy. Its not that his class is hard b/c it's really not, it's just him as a person that I didn't like. Hes a huge smartass his grading system doesnt make sense (I really dont know what grade I made in this class I just put B b/c thats what I might have, but I should have an A actually) He makes you do stuipd things, and he will not cancel class for the return of Jesus.
Let me give you some examples on my first point, the smartass point. Every class you have to do an evaluation of the students that taught the class that day (if your puzzled we will go into that later under the he makes you do stupid things section) its the same questions every time and the last question is, what did you contribute to class today. I said on one "active listening b/c I feel like sometimes I talk too much" and when he returned the paper he wrote on it "You? Never!" That didnt sit well
Next point his grading system...he doesnt give you A's and B's on everything, no on some things he'll give you an B+/A-. What the heck is that is it an A or a B? How do you calculate that into a final grade? Then on other things he gives you a 2 or 3 or 2+...ok sure so if I have 5 2+s and 3 As and an B+/A- what the heck is my grade?
Lastly, he makes you do stupid things...here we will talk about the student teaching. This guy makes us do his job while he gets paid for it. Every class for almost the whole class he has students teach over the subject for that week, where is that fair? Then at the end of the class he gives you the before mentioned evaluation sheet. He probably has the easiest job in the world.
His class is ridiculous he is ridiculous and although I may be alone in this opinion I say DON'T TAKE HIM

Dr. Hagaman is such a wonderful person and professor! I love him so much! He is always willing to help you if you are ever confused about anything or just need some ideas to get started in the right direction. He explains new material in such a way that is easy to understand. He was a big help on that scary 15-page research paper that every ENG 300 student has to do. The work for this class isn't hard, just make sure you don't procrastinate and get behind. He has high expectations for his students, so make sure you give him your best effort and he will be great to work with as you take this class.

This class is so wonderful and Dr. Hagaman is such a huge part of that. He is the sweetest, most kindest man ever! You write a lot in this class, but this class makes writing enjoyable and easier. You learn so much about teaching writing and strategies to use with your students (if you are a teacher already or going to be one), and to help yourself as a writer. I can't say enough good things about 410 or Dr. Hagaman. If you ever have the chance to take him, DO SO! He is wonderful!

Dr. Hagaman is definitely one of an elite group of professors here at Western. He is an amazing professor that really shows in class how much he enjoys teaching. I believe the man wants every student to succeed with an A in his class. Take him....he is absolutely wonderful. The first day of class he goes over pretty much everything you will be doing during the semester, but don't get alarmed, it is not as much as it seems, he walks you through everything. He is the best! With his teaching style, I promise you will learn tons of new information about literature.
I also heard that he is great for English 300 also. Just take him, you won't regret it!

I took Dr. Hagaman's night class. He kept us for the whole 3 hours about every time, but it wasn't too bad. The class is set up very easy, there are no tests!!! He gives quizzes every class, so you have to read the stories that are assigned. There is some writing involved, but I didn't mind it too much (I HATE writing). There are 3 in-class essays you have to write. Also there is a larger writing project at the end of the semester. Each student has to partner with another student and teach a lesson. It wasn't too hard. It's a low maintance class, I would take it.

Dr. Hagman is my favorite professor. He goes out of his way to help any student. He wants the entire class to establish friendships so we spend the first few classes memorizing each other's names. This was a great idea because we all got extremely close this way. Attendance is required. If you don't show up to class, he will email you and ask you if everything is okay and tell you what you missed. He assigns 4 papers, but only 2 will be turned in for a final grade. We have classroom discussions over the papers, and you can have your classmates help you proofread your papers. After the class proofreads your paper, you give your draft in to him and he will read it for you and have it back for you the next week for your final revision. Only 2 out of 4 papers are actually graded and you can pick out what 2 papers you like the best. We also have an anthology project where we get in groups and work with the others to make a fun classroom activity. My group talked about WKU police and it was soo funny! I got an A on the project and I feel that Dr Hagaman is a great grader. Last but not least, you work on a research paper that is due at the end of the semester. You can pick any topic that you are interested in. We take library trips and spend a lil bit of classtime working on it.
I enjoy this class so much and I'm going to be sad when it ends. I don't care much for English, but Dr H is a great man and I'm going to miss him!!! He has gone out of his way to show that he cares. TAKE HIM!!!

Awwwww!!! Dr. Hagaman is so sweet. He is just the nicest man and he REALLY cares about his students. The New York Times is required reading for the course, and he gets us free subscriptions and even hand delivers the papers to those of us in the course who can't come to campus every day to pick them up. You get to write from the heart, whatever's on your mind, and the workshop method of revising each other's papers is awesome. He has papers back promptly (as in, each class meeting) and ALWAYS includes CONSTRUCTIVE criticism along with GOOD comments. He's serious about his job, he's serious about his students, and as long as you come to class, give an honest (HONEST) effort, and revise your papers as he guides (not tells) you, you will get a good grade. Loved his class! Loved it! Why oh why didn't someone tell me about him earlier? Maybe I would have chosen writing instead of literature.

Best composition class I've ever had at Western! Dr. Hagaman is so helpful, and he creates a positive, supportive atmosphere that makes it easy for you to open up and write from the heart. You'll have to write at least one paper a week, but only one out of every three will be graded, and you get to choose which one and then revise it until you think it's ready to turn in. The final is a compilation of what you believe to be your best work. Overall, a very well organized/structured agenda led by a teacher who treats you with respect and motivates you to do your best. (Such a simple combination but often so hard to find!)

In about every eng class you write 8 essays, 4 in/4 out of class. These essays were our only writing assignments, throughout a semester each student is placed in a group and expected to lead the class on a discussion of essays. I truly enjoyed this class, and i hate english. But you learn better writing skills without being taught or lectured. You also have to share atleast one written to the class and they critique it. He is a great guy that makes you feel your writing is good and makes very encouraging comments. Enjoys circle discussions involving whole class, so if your shy or don't like to share~ i would not recommend this class.

Dr. Hagaman may be the best professor in the English department. He gives sincere and encouraging feedback on everything written that you turn in (that's pretty much everything). He has designed this course so you learn by doing--you try a lot of styles for peer editing, you make a portfolio just like your high school students will do and you score each other's portfolios. You also read a book independently about some aspect of writing and present the book and a lesson plan to the class.

In this class you will have to write. The first part of the class is about 1 paper a week. The second part is a group project and a 10 page research paper. These are the manditory assignments for every Eng 300 class, but I think Dr. Hagaman is the best teacher to have for it. He is very concerned with each student's work. He is understanding and willing to work with you on most things. He also helps you in and out of class in any way he can. He is intelligent, positive and genuinely nice. He's a great teacher to have for a class that is going to be lots of work no matter what.

I took the Honors section of ENG 200. Hagaman was a good teacher who wanted to stimulate our creative minds with writing essays ALOT! The project he gave us at the end of the semeter was for more of a ENG 203 class than just intro. Nevertheless, there is a lot of discussion. Hagaman always seemed to be a cross between Mr. Rogers and Bill Cosby. (He even has a blue zip up sweater--Need I say more?!)

You have a reading assignment for everyday in this class, but it is not hard. For the exams, Dr. Hagaman gives you the essay questions in advance and you can bring in any notes you want to use to write it. The only downside is that he likes to have discussion everyday, so you have to know what you read and have an opinion about it.

Dr. Hagaman is a great guy. People in the class took turns bringing snacks each week and if you get into a small class with good chemistry, it is a lot of fun. Some of the activities were a little dull but mostly all of the class was critiquing very students pieces. If you like to write and contribute, you will enjoy him and the class.

Dr. Hagaman is a very caring teacher. No matter how busy he is, he will take the time to talk to his students if they need him. I've never heard anyone who has taken one of his classes say anything bad about him.
