Obeso makes learning Spanish easy. He works with his students and makes sure they understand a subject before he moves on. He does a lot of vocal exercises, which helps the student to remember more. The class is laid back, and you don't have to take a ton of notes as long as you pay attention. If you miss more than two classes he starts taking points off your grade. If you have an A before the final exam you do not have to take the final.

This guy has a major stick in his butt..he isnt as good as he thinks he is...or he lets that get to his teaching. Doesnt reply to emails...slow grader...and a major attitude problem. He will dumb you down! Three exams which are all taken during class in a computer lab THEY ARE INSANE....EVERYONE WAS BOMBING THEM! Random quizzes too which also are tough. Only easy thing is a project you do which is worth a test grade also you have to go to class. You get two freebies then he docks your final grade majorly each time. Take someone else!!!!!

I loved Obeso!!! He makes class so much fun! You leave class laughing usually, which is awesome! I feel like I learned a lot of Spanish. I actually am hoping to do a minor in Spanish because of Obeso. He really is amazing. Be prepared on the tests though. Know your vocab or you will be screwed. Don't take anyone but Obeso!!!!! Oh, and if you have an A at the end of the class, you dont have to take the final.

Mr. Obeso is a very good professor!!! I really enjoyed being in his class! He makes learning Spanish fun and interesting. He's really funny and likes to joke around. This is a difficult course but if you study hard and pay attention in class, you will do fine. Participation is also important. I hadn't had Spanish since my junior year of high school which was like 4 years ago and I never took Spanish 101 in college. So I studied hard and put a lot of effort into this class, and it paid off! And if you get an A in the class before the final, you don't have to take it! :) I highly recommend Gustavo Obeso for Spanish 102!

Buenas! Mr. Obeso is really funny and pretty good at explaining the material. This course however is not easy. The quizzes are hard, but are fortunately only 20% of your grade. The midterms are semi-hard. You have a bunch of other assignments that are generally easy and help your grade out. You do have a presentation that you have to do in spanish, but he lays out a guideline for it and if you follow it, youll get an A. Come to class, after your 2nd absence he takes off 3 points (from your final grade) for each absence. He allows up to 6 EC points. I should have gone to them but didnt, wouldnt have mattered anyways, got a 81% but would have made studying for the final a lot less stressful. Spanish 102 is hard but I would recommended Obeso.

Obeso is funny and his class is a good one to take. I took it as a bi-term before I took 102. The only thing is you only get two absences before he starts taking off and his 'quizzes' are a little on the hard side. If you are taking him for just 102, I would highly advise sitting in on his 101 class or talking to someone from that class. Overall, though, this class was alright.

Obeso is amazing!! I loved him, one of my favorite's so far at wku. He's funny, laid back, and very helpful. I learned way more than what I thought I was going to. There's only a few exams (make sure u know ur vocab, which there's not a whole lot) and a 5 min. presentation (easy A, he gives the layout for it.) If you have an A at the end of the semester, you won't have to take the final. I will for sure be taking Obeso again for 102!! only bad part is, attendance is required. But, it's a class you won't dread. Take Obeso!!

He is nice enough in class however the second class is over, he seems to no longer want to deal with you. Then with very limited office hours, getting any help from him is next to impossible. His grading methods tend to make no sense and lack any consistency. The online portion of the class through My Spanish Lab isn't too bad though there are some hard parts to it and in my opinion the software program is not very good. There are 2 tests and several quizzes which are all very difficult. You also have a culture portion of the class in which you have to do a power point presentation over a Spanish speaking country. One good thing is that he is flexible when he comes to the material covered, he wont cram material in just to be sure that all of the chapters get covered. For this reason, I would be sure to take Span 101 and 102 in the same semester if at all possible.
Be sure to go to class as attendance is taken every day, he allows two absences for whatever reason beyond that you have to have a doctor's excuse or you lose 3 points per day off your final grade. To sum it all up, study, study, study and study more, especially all of the vocabulary. I will update this again at the end of the semester, when I will have completed Span 102.

I took Obeso for a summer course, and he was horrible! This class was a fight for me, and I'm an "A" - "B" student. Every single student I talked to while in this 4 week long course was having issues with their grades as well as getting in touch with him. He doesn't even check his emails during the weekend, so if you had a question on Friday for something due Monday, you're screwed. He just acted like he didn't care the whole time. He was late nearly every day, he would randomly leave the room in the middle of class for ten minutes at a time, his phone was CONSTANTLY ringing, and if you wanted to talk to him after class, you'd better beat him to the door because there were several times he had left the building before I had, and believe me, I was in a rush to get out. He just acts like you're annoying him, taking up his time, and he just doesn't care. Maybe it was just a bad experience because it was a summer course or something, but I wouldn't take my chances.

I LOVED Obeso!! He was an awesome teacher! I got a C because I didnt study, but if you study you should do good. If you have questions he will keep going over the material with you until you understand. You can miss up to 3 classes without excuses. You have homework maybe once-twice a month on this thing called quia. All the Tests and quizes are online in the comp. lab. He is really nice and funny, you have one project on a spanish speaking country and you have an oral exam too. I hadnt had spanish in 2 years and i did fairly well with no studying! I wouldnt take a spanish class if I couldnt take Obeso!!!

I took this course as a first semester freshman and found it very difficult. The reason for that is because when I took spanish in highschool, my teachers hardly ever spoke Spanish. They taught spanish using English. However, in this class, no english is spoken. This class is not very diffiucult if you are fairly competent in the language. But for someone such as myself whose spanish skills were lacking, it was difficult to keep up.
Overall, I would recommend this class. Gustavo is a very good teacher. He is a very nice man and will try to help you if you need it. I went and spoke with him outside of his class several times and he was always very helpful. He is not very good about getting grades back in a timely manner. I didn't know what my grade was until the semester was almost over. In this class, we gave two speeches, took quizzes, a midterm and a final, wrote two movie reviews, and had an oral exam. On the last day when we showed up to take the final, he let those who had an A in the class to be exempt from taking it. Unfortunately, I was not one of those lucky few :)

Mr. Obeso is a nice professor, and he's really funny. I took AP Spanish IV in high school, so I was coming into this class expecting it to be a cakewalk. Boy was I wrong! This class is NOT easy by any means. You will need to study, study, study. Hopefully you had a better Spanish teacher than I did in high school, because I quickly found out how bad I was at Spanish!
The tests are moderately difficult...I probably would have done a lot better if I would have really studied for each of them. My saving grace for the final was that Obeso doesn't make you take the final if you have an A in the class. So try really hard to make an A so you don't have to worry about the final (which I heard was one of the toughest tests out of all of them).
The one thing that made me mad was the cultural presentations we do in class. they are 5 minutes long, and you have to speak about half of your presentation in Spanish. I am not a good public speaker, but I worked really hard to make sure that my slideshow was nice and my information was not from wikipedia. I made a mid-C on my presentation, which really miffed me. But whatever!
Anyway, I would recommend Obeso, because I'm pretty sure any Spanish course is going to be difficult! Just be ready to work hard to get a good grade! Also, he doesn't respond to emails, so you need to go see him in person and establish a good relationship with him--he will work with you on your grades! Good luck!

Obeso is a great teacher with a great attitude. I took a bi-term of Spanish 201 and it was sometimes very quickly paced and other times very laid back. With Obeso you need to have an open mind and a lot of patience. Class was sometimes full of Youtube videos and it didn't feel like a lot of learning but when he taught, he taught well. If you have questions, he will answer and he will teach it until you learn it. He wants everything in Spanish, but he's easygoing if you don't know something.
Bottom line: if you pay attention, have patience with the class, and follow along in the book, you will do well.

Obeso is an amazing teacher. He takes time to help every student and puts alot of effort into what he is doing. The class is alot of fun, I made so many new friends here. He does speak Spanish (no english allowed). If you don't understand something, or what to know something he will answer your question. The tests aren't horrible if you take the quizzes. They are really close to being to same. I recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn Spanish or is a Spanish major.

Obeso is a wonderful teacher for students who have had a real hard time for foreign language in the past, or for people who haven't had a spanish class in a long time. He offers extra credit and is very understanding about grades. His quizzes vary in structure, including even a word search, with the english word on the word list and the spanish word in the puzzle. If your grade is a an A, he won't make you take the final. Although he only teaches bi-terms at the moment, I would suggest him to anyone!

Professor Gustavo is an amazing teacher!
You take a lot of notes, but only so you can better understand the course, which is just mainly vocabulary. He really breaks things down and tries to relate it to your life. He is hilarious, and I took a bi-term ever single day at 8AM! But he made it a lot of fun and made me really enjoy spanish!! Just make sure you come to class and pay attention to what he says, and you'll be fine!
So if you have to take a Spanish class, take Obeso! He's great!

I loved this class. And believe me when I say this because I had this class as an 8 AM bi-term at the end of this Spring '07 semester! He can be funny and a character. His class isn't hard as long as you pay attention to what he's teaching. You do use a book but not that often, most of the things you learn are written on the board. but do be aware to pay attention to the vocab, b/c he might not cover that as much. The class is still not really hard. You have to do an oral presentation over a latin country...might i add you have to do it in Spanish...but it's really easy. You will also have an oral interview at the end of the semester, it's only 5 minutes long and he e-mails you the questions that he might ask. I recommend taking him b/c i'm not the best student, but if i can get an A by having an 8 AM bi-term class...i must be doing BIG THANGS!!!

He is very interactive with his students and takes the time to make sure you understand. The quizzes really help when preparing for the mid-term. As long as you come to class, which is mandatory, and pay attention, study your notes, you will be fine! Everything is in the notes that is on the test.

He is a GREAT Teacher!!! He was always willing to help and I actually learned and wanted to attend his class everyday. Some people don't like that he takes points off when you're absent but it doesn't matter because he offers extra credit. And he canceled class and notified everyone ahead of time like 3 or 4 times during the semester anyway so it's not bad. Take him for Spanish - some other teachers are crazy as hell and expect spanish 101 students to all ready be able to speak spanish. He is NOT like that. He's a really cool teacher.

He did not go over information too fast, his quizzes are easier than the tests but the tests are supposed to be a little harder. He offered extra credit and was always there to answer any questions you may have. He is also a really nice guy and fun to have in class. He usually tries to joke about things so he is laid back.
The only bad thing about his class, well not if you usaully attend class every day, but he does take points off for not being there but like I said he does offer extra credit.
He is a REALLY GREAT TEACHER and I would recommend him to anyone. Way better than Eller!!!

Mr. Obeso has been my favorite teacher here at Western. He made Spanish extremely easy and fun. I reccommend takign him as a bi-term class. Its good to haev it everyday so you do to forget anything. Alot of people think the bi-terms are harder, but not this one. It is extremely easy. He is always willing to help. The class has 2 exams and 9 quizzes. You get to drop your 3 lowest quizzes too. You also have a short 2 mintue presentation on a country (easy) and a short paragragh you read out loud and pronouce in Spanish. He grades extremely easy as long as you show him you care about your grade and you participate in discussion. Take him!

Professor Obeso was a nice professor. The class was not too bad, but he had a habit of saying one thing, like the due date of your particular project, and then forgetting about it, so you end up doing a lot of work and he's not ready for you to present it. Consequently, you constantly got frustrated. The tests weren't awful, but you definitely had to study for them. And watch out, he likes to make you write in complete sentences on those tests, sometimes up to a paragraph. If you get concerned about your grade, ask about it and he will help you bring it up. And our final was a project, not a test.

Its a foreign language. To some, its not going to be easy. He does expect you to be able to speak some elementary spanish before you enter the class, so be warned. He doesn't speak in spanish a lot during the class, but will say things that he expects you to understand. He also expects you to memorize pages of vocabulary for each test. Use flash cards or have a good friend "quiz you". Overall, study. You can't b.s. through his tests.

First of all, Obeso is a pretty cool guy guy but that's where it ends. His tests are freakin insane. I graduate college this semester with a 3.6 GPA and I thought the tests were way too difficult. There are quite a few easy quizes and other things throughout the semester but the only 2 tests make up 40% of the grade. He's an o.k. teacher but he just expects you to know too much and his tests are really different than what you expect going into them. Although from what I've read he's a lot better than Padilla, don't expect to breeze through this class. Try to avoid his class if at all possible. There has to be an easier teacher than him.
