Honestly, the course is easy. Just don't expect to get a lot out of it. The description of the course says that you'll be reading science fiction and using knowledge of psychology to evaluate the validity of it. We never actually really did that except maybe once. Usually discussions revolved around what we thought was cool about the class and if we wanted to live in a world like the one in the book. We didn't have structured discussions involving "is this plausible" like we were expected to, and yet we were expected to write a paper doing just that when we spent almost none of the semester doing it. He will also regularly cut you off while you're talking to say what he want's to say, so be prepared for that. But honestly, if you show up and talk, you'll get a good grade. and you watch movies and TV shows for part of the class.

Dr. Norman is a very passionate professor and you will love him as a person. As a teacher though, he is very difficult and the class in general is really hard. Make sure you take plenty of notes and attend every class. When you are writing your essays on your tests, make sure to write everything that possibly can come to your mind about that subject because even if it's irrelevant to the question he might still throw some points your way.

Dr. Norman is a wonderful teacher. He is so interested in what he is teaching! I love this class and all the material I have learned is very interesting. The tests for this course are quite difficult. Although attendance isn't mandatory you must attend class and study a lot to do well. The tests are multiple choice, short answer and essay. If you are having trouble with anything Dr. Norman is more than happy to help.

Dr. Norman knows his material probably more than any professor I've ever met. He goes above and beyond to look up books and read them to provide the best information for his class to learn. However, this class is more difficult than I had anticipated. There is a lot of material that you must study for the test and even after I studied extensively, I struggled. There are quizzes before each test, 10 multiple choice questions. He drops the lowest quiz grade. The tests are multiple choice, short answer, and essay. He is very particular about how you answer the essay questions. If you are having trouble, I suggest you meet with him. He is happy to help.

I am writing this evaluation after seeing that the only other evaluation on this course was quite negative. I took this course this past semester with Dr.Norman. I have nothing but the most positive things to say. Yes, you have to come to class every day and take good notes. Yes, you have to study your notes thouroughly to do well on the exams. There is no reading from a book, no articles, and no homework. Sensation may not be the most interesting topic. But Norman is one of the best professors I have EVER had and he does his best to make things interesting. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS, especially over the alternative, physiology.

I went into this class thinking that 495 was going to be an extremly difficult class from what I was told from others. I left the class with an easy A and being happy I took the course. Although he can be a little boring at times, he loves his work and it shows in his dedication to try to make the class entertaining and enjoyable for students. If you don't attend class regularly you will be in trouble for exams though. The exams are multiple choice/short answer/essay. Norman has a very particular style for grading his exams and wants you to write them like you are explaining to someone that doesn't know anything about Psychology. He's happy to meet with you after each exam, go over them, and show you what you did wrong and why. Make sure you do this. Once you figure out his sytle for grading it's easy to get an A on each exam. It's a required course to graduate and I highly suggest you make sure you take it from Norman and no one else.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
He may be a very smart and esteemed psychologist, but he should never teach this class again. Not only will he repeat something 4 different ways (unnecessarily), but he will talk about things which are not on the exam and that are way more complicated than anyone in undergrad ever needs to see. I think two people in the 22 person class paid attention or were even in every class.
His tests are awfully worded and make you wonder if you've actually learned anything.
If you can take a bore for an hour and twenty minutes and don't want to learn or enjoy the very cool subject of sensation and perception, sure, take this class.
I even took the honors version. No help there. Just had to write a very short explanation of an article. Boring.
Otherwise, STEER CLEAR.

I hate history, but I loved this class. The sheer volume of Dr. Norman's knowledge is incredible. He's a very nice guy, and helpful, too. There is a book assigned, but it's not needed for the class. The more detailed your notes are, though, the better off you are.

Take it from me, do not miss the class - or if you do, try not to miss too much. It makes a world of difference. Dr. Norman is such a nice professor to and is willing to help you out if you need it! The class is also surprisingly more interesting than I thought it would be! Also, the textbook is not needed for the course; however, make sure you take good notes. Even though I got a C, I totally deserved it b/c I missed several classes in the beginning...I probably could have had an A though if I would have tried as hard in the beginning as I did in the end of the term.

This class turned out to be more interesting than I thought it would be. Although, never ever plan for class to be cancelled or to get out early...not even 3 min. early! Take my advice and do the extra credit paper, it really helps out when your grade is borderline. The quizzes are tricky so don't put them off, and not study! Norman was a great teacher who knew his stuff, and always brought books, transpariences, and videos to aid in his lecture.

Dr. Norman is a great teacher. He can take boring topics and make them interesting. While a book is required for the class, it is not needed because he will only test his students on material he covers in class. There are no mandatory papers to write for this class, but there is a bonus paper which can be done for extra credit (5 pages over a historical figure in psychology, 10 for Grad students). There are quizes, usually about 10 multiple choice questions. These are not hard as long as you pay attention in class, and he drops the 2 lowest quiz grades. There are 4 exams, including the final, multiple choice (scantron), short answer, and 1 essay. If you attend class and take good notes, you will get an A in his class.

You can tell Dr. Norman really knows his stuff. He is super helpful too. His lectures tend to be really dry and full of useless information however. Don't ever expect to get out of class early though.

Dr. Norman gives a lot of notes. In his notes, he gives a lot of experiments for examples. Write these down even if they seem unimportant at the time. Half of the questions on his tests are application of ideas, theory, etc. He is a good professor and I could tell he enjoyed his class. The only part of the class I did not like was that there was a lot of brain anatomy information he made us know before he went on to the more interesting information.
