For most people sociology is an enjoyable class and an easy A if you do a moderate amount of work. I can assure you that this is NOT the experience you will have with Mr. Mielants. Sitting through his lectures was pure torture. I didn't learn a thing and brought my GPA down because of the C I received. He gives random quizzes which have to be completed in a given amount of time and then grades them entirely too hard. Not only that, but he will give you a D with no explanation and then give you an A on the next one. His inconsistency in grading papers is terrible. Just beware if you take him. Prepare to invest a lot of time in studying. Good luck!

Mr. Mielants class was ridiculous. The class time was basically Mr. Mielants' preaching hour. Mr. Mielants is a left wing nutcase. I did not learn much of anything about sociology in his class. Most of it consisted of how we should protect the environment, how corporations are bad, and how Karl Marx is his hero. His class should be called socialism 101. Mr. Mielants has pop quizes about every other week. All his quizes and exams and in essay format. I found the class very easy because I am good at writing essays. All you have to do to make an A in his class is tell him what he wants to hear. Write about how the environment needs to be saved, how socialism is a good for of government, how women and minorities are being opressed, how Geroge Bush only cares about the wealthy. I am not kidding, because that is what I resorted to on both of my exams and I got As on them. I in no way believed any of the garbage he teached. It's sad that taxpayers money goes out to pay this guy's salary. The man was anti-American. If he hates America so much, then he should go back to Belgium.

i had difficulty in this class becuz most of the readings i didnt understand. the teacher however is very helpful when u ask for his help (i should have) You dont take alot of notes towards the end, becuz he puts that on you to decide what u think needs to be written down. There were 3 main text books and a few packets he handed out. You must read them all. All his "pop quizzes" were essay type questions which he made from the previous nights readings. (just to make sure your reading) he's very strick on grading these, so know your $hit!

Stay away from this guy if you know what's good for your grade point average. He's easy to get along with, but impossible to please when it comes to writing essays. For an introductory course, the difficulty of this class is ridiculous.

Very interesting class! Makes you veiw things a different way and think about things you never would have thought about. He gives pop quizzes but you can generally figure out when. His mid-term and final are a little tough to prepare for and his grading is a little strange, but I loved the class and would tell anyone to take it.

This class was the hardest one I've ever taken. Not only was it beyond boring, but Mr. Mielants makes it very difficult to get a good grade. He gives random pop quizzes which he grades entirely too hard and a midterm that has a great affect on your final grade. His lecture notes do not corespond well with the long essay tests he gives. I would highly reccommed that you stay away from this particular professor.

People always say that it's the professor that makes the class interesting. Dr. Mielants is a good person but he makes not attempt to make the class interesting. Pop quizes are given at random times, one mid-term that you must ACE, a presentation over a chapter and a cumulative final. Attendance is required. Plus, you don't professor's w/ an accent, he's from Belgium but his is understandable. I don't suggest this class to any person.

The class is very liberal in ideology; there are two essay tests and sporadic quizzes
Dr. Mielants is a nice Belgian guy and is accessible
