I don't think the course would be that difficult, but Dr. Smith makes it difficult. Some people love him and take every class he teaches, but they must understand his teaching style. I did not and had no idea what was going on most of the class. Other people seemed confused as well. There are two tests- a mid-term and a final. We took our final a month before the end of the semester. He will work with you, but he is horrible around returning emails as well as appointments. I was supposed to meet with him and I had to wait 45 minutes because a girl walked into his office and was there for over an hour. Some of us have a schedule to keep. I recommend another teacher.

Dr. Smith is very helpful and understanding when you're confused. This class is really hard though. It's a requirement for Sociology majors so I didn't have a choice but if you have to take it, Dr. Smith is great. He doesn't explain things very well sometimes but he's very patient.

To begin, it should be mentioned that this class is about collective behavir which is the odd and seemingly irrational behaviors that people engage in, such as riots, fads, crazes, fashions, rumors, sightings of religious or paranormal, and urban legends. The class is not an in depth look at societal functioning as the title would imply to anyone just reading the title as I did before enrolling. The other half of the class is focused on social movements.
The work is not difficult as grades were largely determoined by a take home midterm, a term paper due at the end of the semester, attendence, three short papers comparing two articles about collective behavior or social movements, and an easy project. Extra credit was available on the midterm.
The most difficult part of the class for most people was showing up, and sitting through class. I would not recommend this class to most people, if only because they would find it boring and not show up, which will kill your grade in what is otherwise an easy class.
Dr. Smith is enjoyable enough, but you know not for everybody.

This class was awesome. There are only two exams and both are take home...8 questions 2-? pages double spaced answering questions. 4 photo essays with a group, and 1 question per theorists. He is a good instructer and sometimes he is too monotone but has a good personality and has a heart. He too understands the mind set of a college student. This is a good class to take. Enjoy!

Doug makes the class easy, he is the type of professor that wants you to do well and will do whatever he can to assist you with class work. Theory is a pretty boring subject unless that is what you enjoy about sociology. Doug makes it bearable and uses many stories to help you remember who said what and when.

Dr. Smith is a wonderful professor, he knows his subject very well. He tells you what you need to know for the test. Very laid back and understanding. He gives assignments, about four or five depending on if the class has time. You read a short story/information and write about it. He does take role and give you a grade for it, but he only takes role if someone reminds him. So honestly I didn't know how that played a part in your grade. He is willing to work with students and just a good professor in general. I also never used the book, I just came to class every day and took notes. I wouldn't buy the books, he explains things you need to know for the test. I would take him for any classes he teaches.

This course was especially enjoyable considering the chances to attain extra credit and make up for possible bad test grades. He teaches soc 210\220 which are some of the best classes i have had in my 3.5 year college career. Hes very knowledgeable and a must take if you are a sociology major!

Dr.Smith is a great teacher! His tests are a little difficult, but he tells you what the short answer and essay questions will be and will even let you prepare them before the test. His lectures were usually interesting and he was just fun to listen too!

Dr. Smith required 5 papers in this class (most of which were very short. he typically gave full credit if you followed the instructions...be sure to explain the theory behind the reading and give adequate justification). There were three tests (including the final) which were graded on a curve. He passed out a studyguide before each exam. An attendance sheet was passed out nearly every class and your total grade for attendance was based on that. Reading the textbooks are not necessary if you take decent notes and go to class.

His quizzes are hard, even with reading the books and studying notes. Subjects taught are interesting, and Dr. Smith is really funny. There is about 5 writing assignments (2-3pgs) that are easy to do and receive 100% on. Great class if your interested in Social Psych.

Dr. Smith is a very nice and funny guy. I had a family emergency during the semester and he was very helpful to me during that time. He is very interesting and very helpful. He will be willing to meet with you outside of class if you need to. I would take this course.

I heard this class was suppose to be easy, but I hated it. It was sooooo boring and uninteresting. Dr. Smith's notes were crazy and half of the time I had no idea what he was talking about. His tests are hard, you have 3, two of which he calls "quizzes" and the final. They are by no means a "quiz". And you have to do 5 papers that he doesn's explain very well.

This class was so boring, I could barely force myself to go, even though attendance is a part of your grade. The class averages on tests were always low, because his teaching style really doesn't get anything across that's on the test. Teacher tends to drone on in a quiet voice and is very hard to pay attention to. Also, the final is cumulative of everything you DIDN'T learn during the semester. I think the majority of my classmates felt the same way I did about this course.

Hopefully they wont offer this course again, no tests just pop quizes and a term paper acts as the final, he is so boring, the subject matter is interesting but the class is not, he is such a pushover in class you can get him to change anything

Dr. Smith is my favorite teacher. I love him. I have had him for: Self and Society, Methods, and Environmental Sociology. He actually cares about his students. He will let you turn things in late, and he is very understanding. He will help you with any question you have. He is the best!

Smith is great, he really tries to make this otherwise boring-as-can-be class interesting. He even fell off his desk trying to make a point. One day he dressed up in several differnt outfits which was humerous but got our attention. He is always trying to relate the information to real life senerios. If you have a question regarding anything he will answer your question and if he dont know the answer he will keep searching till he finds out. I highly recommend him. He works with students well too and his tests come striaght from class discussions. Good job Dr. Smith, keep up the good work!

Very easy class. Attendance is optional. You only have 3 tests and 3 papers. If you do the paper you get a 100. He gives review sheets and its also pretty interesting. Very good teacher one of the better ones I have had and he also looks like the Big Show and calls him seld "Love Dog"

This class is unbelievably boring but Dr. Smith is an entertaining professor he trys to make class interesting and fun even though the material is uninteresting. He says that the book is required but I think I only used mine a couple of times, it isn't worth paying the money to use it. I definatlly recommend taking Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith is great, he is very understanding and will let you turn in your papers late if you need to. You have to write 5 papers that are really easy, they are only 2 pages long and are just your opinion of an article. The text book is required but I never used it, as long as you go to class and get the notes that is all that you need.
