Mrs. Mincey is an excellent teacher and the course isn't as difficult as it may seem the first week of class. The reading assignments are often broken down into smaller parts and there are interesting discussions in class. The connections made between the classical period and modern times are especially interesting. The only I think the class could be improved is with more "check your reading" quizzes, because if you aren't going to be held responsible for the assignments, you probably will skip some of the reading.

This has been one of the best, if not the best class I have taken in the last five years. I think this class could easily be extended into two semesters. There is a great deal of information that students going into teaching can learn from Dr. Mincey. The instruction was fabulous. I felt very at ease discussing issues that would arise in and out of the classroom. I am greatful for the opportunity to have had this instructor.

The class, at times, was utterly useless to those not entering the secondary profession or taking the 599 course! In the beginning months we were bombarded with news about a class that did not affect us and it was unfair that we had to sit there for twenty minutes or so while the people involved worked out their "game plan". On the other hand, I have to give credit where credit is due and say that the teaching exercises were beneficial to my strategies/experience. Also, I think that as college students we are more than a little broke in the money department and if the teacher would remember that, that would be a great help!

This class is very beneficial to anyone who wants to become an English teacher. The instructor really knows her content area and gives her students many ideas when it comes time to teach the lessons required in the class. The only downside is that she is very picky. You have to read quite a bit and turn in notes for everything you read. She will not give you full credit for the notes unless you put them in outline format. Other than that, she is a wonderful instructor.

I don't know what the problem is with the two students that posted the poor rating for Mrs. Mincey's class. This class was anything but difficult. I found it to be enjoyable, informative, and a class that I actually looked forward to going to. The only problem these students could have had with Mrs. Mincey is that she caught them cheating and they didn't like it so they thought they could get back at her by posting unfounded and completely untrue comments. This course did nothing but encourage me to come to class and to seek out deeper meaning in the writings and songs that I encounter in everyday life. The notes for the class were far from overkill and I found that having quizzes every once in a while helped me to learn the vocabulary that was on the mid-term. I guess these two forgot about those while they were copying their homework, final, and evaluation off of each other. I think Mrs. Mincey is a great teacher and showed no preference for one student over another. She was fun and lively and made it a true joy to learn. I could only laugh as these two underachievers claimed that this was the hardest class they have ever taken. If these two think that this was the hardest class they have taken then I would like to know what they are majoring in. I myself would like to apologize to Mrs. Mincey for the lack of respect and pure lies those two put on this page. You are a great teacher Mrs. Mincey and I wish I could take more classes under you.

The two individuals that decided to bash Mrs. Mincey on an evaluation are cowards. If any problem ever occurred, the individuals should have had the courage to discuss it before the course ended with them failing. Obviously, the view of the course represented by these individuals is not to be taken seriously by anyone who can read and write beyond a sixth grade level. Mrs. Mincey is an enthusiastic teacher with a great love for literature. I recommend this course to anyone!

This class was the hardest class I have taken since I have been at Morehead State University. I didnt like the fact that there was soo much work for the level of class. The teacher seemed to have something against me because everytime I would turn something in she would have to criticize it. Also, the fact that we only had 2 tests was really hard because you had to know all this information for one test and it made it very difficult to pass. It was like the professor was out to make the students not to pass. I also feel that the professor was not fair to all the students in the class because upon giving an answer to a question she would criticize me and no matter how wrong or off the other students were they were always right and that is so wrong of her to do. I will never take a class under this professor again.<hr><b>Professor's Comment (05/08/2003):</b>
"<i>There were two students in this section who were warned about plagiarism early in the course (turning in identical responses to out-of-class writings) and then chose to plagiarize their take-home final from sources on the web. As you can tell by reading these two adjacent "poor" evaluations (posted at nearly the same time), they seem to be even mimicking each other in their postings. I heard several of these same observations in conference with one of the aforementioned students, who apparently does the writing for the pair. Ironically, instead of failing them for plagiarism, I gave them another chance to do their own work. If, in fact, these two evaluations came from the students I suspect, they were submitted (according to the time) after I invited them in for a conference about their plagiarism and before they found out that I would not automatically fail them but give them another chance. The degree of credibility of the writers is demonstrated by the fact that they both claim to have an "A" in the class but complain that the class is too difficult to pass and the instructor too critical of their work.</i>"

This class sucked. I felt that there was way to much reading involved and that the reading was not really explained so that I could understand. I do not feel the professor was helpful at all. I will never take a course under this professor again. This professor did help me realize that I did not want to return to this school again next year. I felt like I was an outsider in the class and the professor did nothing but contribute to that fact. When I did participate in class I felt as though my answeres were not good enough to have even been said where as when my fellow classmates gave an answer no matter how wrong it was their answers were always well recieved. I felt as though this class was on of the worst experiences in my history at this university.<hr><b>Professor's Comment (05/08/2003):</b>

I think this course provdied me with information that will help me greatly during my professional semester. The mini-lessons and readings gave me the opportunity to acquire new ideas and to see from other students' performances what works well and what I could borrow and tweak to use in my own teaching. The guest speakers gave me the chance to ask professionals in the field questions that I have regarding classroom management, pedagogy techniques, duties other than teaching I will be responsible for, advice for first time teachers, etc. One activity I found to be quite helpful was the "commonplace journal." I always read of new ideas or come across interesting lesson plans and this gave me the opportunity to collect them and comment on them so that I could refer back to them later. I will definitely continue practicing this and plan to take the advice of our guest speakers and keep notebeooks of everything I come across because you never know when you may be able to use references and resources you find in your classroom. Always remember--Don't re-invent the wheel if you don't have to. Thi is something I will definitely remember

I think the reading notes were a bit much--I would've benefited more from taking a quiz or some other type of evaluated strategy. Many times I found myself spending my time searching for highlighted words or important sentences, but not making a true effort towards comprehension of the text.
Mrs. Mincey was very fair, respectful, and interested in what we had to say. I felt very comfortable teaching mini-lessons and the responses she gave on those lessons were constructive, but not critical. All in all, a very delightful class--though a little overwhelming at times.

Even though the four week class was difficult due to the lack of time, I really beneifited from the information supplied by Professor Mincey. Also her sincere approach toward each student made this course very enjoyable and valuable. I we were overwhelmed with information for this course I didn't feel that it was busy work as the instructor expressed a lot of value in what she was sharing.

Dr. Mincey is an excellent proffesor! Take her! Not only is she incredibly knowledged in english and literature, but it seems like she knows something about EVERYTHING!! Particulary she is advanced in "fallacy busting" and advocasy, or in other words lawyer type analysis--this is a small part of the semester, but i learned SO MUCH!! if you love analyzing like i do.. woo hooo for you! Also, i have never met a english teacher or professor who CARES SO MUCH! She makes you do revisions after each paper, and i learned so much about my grammatical errors ive been making all my life--finally brought to light!! Overall, Dr. Mincey is great to take! She is also lenient about turning things in on time--concerned more w/quality than punctuality..i loved this! shes a sweet woman and a pleasure to take as an eng. proff.

this course was a very interesting poetry class for myself. i do not truly enjoy poetry, but mrs. mincey made the class interesting. her attitude was nice and laid back making the class more enjoyable. she introduced certain concepts and applied those to everything we did throughout the semester giving the student more exposure. the final was a summary of the course as well as an analysis of a piece we focused on at the end. the midterm was a group of essays which were not difficult if you keep up with the readings. overall, the class was a great learning experience. not only that, but i got exposed to a lot of new literature pieces that i never knew existed thanks to her wide variety of pieces. the inclusion of the lyrics was also a nice touch that made the class more enjoyable.

Overall this class was a good class, but I feel that the chapter notes were a waste of my time. I do not learn by copying things out of the book, and did not do my reading as thorough as I should have because I knew I had to get the notes done. I also feel that I lost points on my notes because of the knowledge I already had going into the class. As for the notebook, I am not responding...

I found this course to be very useful. Of course, I found some things to be better than others, but that is normal with any class. I thoroughly enjoyed the speech team visitors and I really needed all the work we did with grammar and usage. I needed a good brush up and having us teach it was an innovative way to get us to learn in an active way. The only thing that wasn't clear to me was the scaled down unit for the notebook. I know I asked questions about it during the class, and it is possible I understood it then, but when I went to complete it, I was lost once more. I did my best on it, however, and that is all I can do. Personally, I do no think another instructor is needed for this course. The rescheduling of some things was a little confusing, but it did not warrant a searing remark or a replacement in professors. I think that, if anything, it was partially our fault for not asking more questions or calling the professor for clarification. Not all responsibility lies with a teacher. We are adults and if someone had a problem, talking about with the professor would have been a step to the right solution. I, personally, was very grateful for the reduction of assignment at the end and for the list of what needed to be in the portfolio. I have had professors who just suspected a student to know. The eleven days seemed short while I was using them, but that is more because of my workload in other classes. Eleven days certianly does not sound that bad. Anyway, this has become a narrative. This class has been beneficial to me and I would not replace the instructor.

Its easy to see that Mrs. Mincey loves her job, and loves passing that knowledge along to her students. Anyone who talks with her will find that she doesn't tire about talking about the issues that affect English teachers. She is friendly, highly approachable, and helpful whenever she is called upon. As a person, I really like her. As an instructor, I find her to be highly competent in subject matter. I would also like to note that Mrs. Mincey is the only instructor i've had who has addressed the issue of teaching grammar. We are inundated with literature and not much grammar for the most part as english ed students, and its refreshing to see an instructor address something nobody else ever does...it seems that other instructors act like we'll never have to teach grammar. She is flexible to student needs, and is willing to go the extra mile to accommodate her students. She is a rare find among instructorts I have had at MSU. However, I do have some comments/suggestions on how Mrs. Mincey could better the course. I found it very difficult to keep up with assignments because of the changes in the syllabus due to what i think was overkill in guest speakers. I enjoyed hearing from them, but there is a point where what we were getting from them did not seem as important as impending assignments that were not getting enough discussion time due to the fact that we just used time left over from the guest speakers to address such things instead of making the coursework front and center. I feel that this piled too much responsibility on students to figure out things on their own. Also, the notebooks were an extreme pain in that we knew we had to do them, but were unsure of exactly what was supposed to be in them until shortly before they were due. A person might have known enough to do alot of the assignments for the notebook BEFORE we got the checksheet, but there is no way we could have known the majority of the assignments in detail until shortly before the due date. I found the final assignments that were a part of the notebook to be extremely vague in that I was unsure what/how i would be graded on them. This was scary and caused anxiety. It just seems like too much was left until the tail end of the semester and this is hard on students when they are trying to prepare for finals in other classes and suddenly get "surprise assignments." I really like Mrs. Mincey and think she is an excellent instructor, but I do feel that the course could be constructed in a manner that would be more beneficial to students and cause less last minute anxiety. I read in another evaulation where a peer of mine suggested that "another instructor should be found." I do not find this to be the case at all. Mrs. Mincey has always been open to suggestions from students, and has shown herself to be accomodating and student-oriented, so I am sure that whatever qualms students had with the course, Mrs Mincey will review and address those in the future. It is hard to know how students feel about your class until you get evaluations like these. This is what these are for!

The only reason I took this course was because it was listed as a requirement for my major. I went in with a positive attitude and came out with one. I did feel that there was a lack of organization at times, but who is organized all the time. I worked extremely hard, but it was my fault. The course had its benefits and weaknesses. One if the benefits is that it opened opportunites through guest speakers. Personally, I would never think to speak to some of these people on my own, but I had the opportunity to do so in this class. The only weakness is that we did chapter notes. I felt like I was in high school again. No offense, but I can choose what is important in the chapters without writing it down. Overall, I learned a lot and felt a strong desire from the teacher about English. She loves what she does and it shows! Teaching English varies from professor to professor, but I think Mrs. Mincey was fair and helpful.

Professor Mincey's priority is adequately preparing her students for the "real" situations they will encounter as they enter the teaching profession. She did not just lecture to us about information we read in the textbook. She worked hard to coordinate with and bring in experts and guest speakers who dealt with the topics on a daily basis so that we could question and interact with them. This was very helpful. The fact that these people are human - as is Mrs. Mincey - and that they have real lives sometimes made it impossible to adhere to our calendar and things had to be rearranged. Yes, as a student, this is frustrating because it becomes confusing to remember what assignments are due when. But, this is the essence of true teaching - flexibility. No good teacher will strictly follow a preset schedule because if he or she does, some students will be left behind and some will be bored to tears. When we are teachers, we will face interruptions and sometimes we will have to adjust our calendars and our students may become confused and we may, too. We will just have to be as flexible as Professor Mincey has been and sometimes accept late assignments from students with the realization that we might not have been clear about when it was due. Professor Mincey is extremely kind about accepting late assignments. Perhaps she is too kind because I am certain that she is stuck grading a mountain of them right now in addition to grading finals. Mrs. Mincey was not unreasonable in the number of assignments she gave. She was also very fair with her grading and she always explained her reasoning behind criticisms. I have had a geat deal of difficulty in my personal life this semester, and Mrs. Mincey was very understanding about the way that affected my academic performance. Professor Mincey is the first teacher I have had at this university who has acknowledged the fact that I will have to teach grammar in addition to literature and that I may need some instruction in how to do so. I have no further classes to take because I will be entering my professional semester in January. English 500 is the ONLY class in which I have had instruction in how to teach grammar and mechanics. I would NOT recommend replacing the professor in this course. Mrs. Mincey is one of the very few instructors that I have had who has realized that I need to learn practical application for the knowledge I have acquired. Aside from this, Mrs. Mincey provided numerous helpful resources for us, including a webpage that she maintains. To be perfectly honest, the midterm and final reflective notebooks were a pain. The requirements for them were given to us at least one week ahead of time, however, and they consisted on things we were supposed to have been doing throughout the semester. The fact that I did not keep up is not a reason for me to criticize Professor Mincey. I recall her mentioning at the beginning of the course that we needed to write reflections after we had guest speakers. It might be helpful to include the notebook requirements in the syllabus and adjust them later, if necessary. It would give students a better overall picture of how much is required for them and it may encourage them to stay more up-to-date. I must say - if anything - the professor reduced the number of assignments listed on the syllabus. I can recall two times that extra reading assignments (not listed on syllabus) were emailed. However, there was no physical product due as a result of these assignments and the professor even noted that some students may not have had a chance to read them at that late date. Any teacher will make a mistake or forget something from time to time. We would not be human if we did not. Professor Mincey is not perfect herself and she realizes that her students are not and she does not expect them to be. She is an excellent, caring teacher who treats her students like real people rather than the student-bots some professors see us as. For this reason, as well as the many others I have illustrated, I would definitely recommend Professor Mincey's course to other students.

The teacher kept changing the syllabus throughout the semester. We had to turn in a midterm and a final notebook and the professor didn't give us a list of what was to be in the notebook until about five days before the notebook was due. She would e-mail us assignments all the time at the last minute. I think the class was very beneficial, but I would definitely look into getting another instructor.

This class was useful in terms of outside resources brought into the classroom in terms of other professors, students and educational professionals who offered us practical advice. Professor Mincey was sincere in trying to acquaint students with as many resources as possible that could help make the transition to "real teaching" more smooth. English 500 had a relaxed atmosphere which helped me not get so anxious about teaching assignments. This class could benefit from a more true-to-life syllabus. Students could also benefit from getting mid-term and final notebook requirements earlier than one week before they're due. And it would also be beneficial to off-campus students to not have to meet with the professor on days when we don't meet for class. The web page designed by Professor Mincey is very helpful to completing class assignments. Overall, I think Prof. Mincey has the interest of her students at heart and her desire to incorporate other teachers, students, professionals was excellent for Eng. 500 students.

This course was very difficult and required a lot of discipline. It was very challenging for me because of so many things going on at once...papers, journal entries, quizzes, etc. Yet, it was a quality learning experience. This class helped me to see my potential. Mrs. Mincey is a great teacher and shows a genuine interest in each student. I thoroughly enjoyed her class.

This class was great for someone going into the teaching profession. I learned more in this class than in any of my other education classes! At times the amount of work seemed a bit overwhelming with all the other classes put with it. I spent more time on this class than in any other all semester...but considering the things I learned...it was well worth my time. The instructor did a wonderful job...although I would have liked to have been given handouts for notebooks and assignments that would require a lot of time sooner than what they were given. Overall, I think this class is great!!

In this course, not only did I have to think about the details of each assignment, but also how each topic related to me and my beliefs. It helped me to get in touch with the metaphoric aspects used in all writing and brought my attention to many allusions made in literature and film. I had to work very hard to complete all of the reading assignments as well as the writing journals. I learned how to balance my time more effectively with the course work, even though at times it was somewhat overwhelming with my class load. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and the chance to gain the different viewpoints presented in it. I now have a greater respect for the effort put into literature, and find myself seeking out new material on my own time.

This course was really fun. There was a lot of reading but not to much that you were overwhelmed. I enjoyed all the poems and two plays that we read. The teacher was great. She really reviewed the reading to where if you didn't understand it, when she finished you did. The course that I took was Dead poets and rock music. We listened to a variety of music. So if someone needed a lit. clas this is the one that I would suggest for them to take. I would also suggest this professor for the class.

I believe this class would have been more intersting if we had to write stories . Some things just to see how we write, perhaps to show how creative we are. Instead all we did all semester was review articles and summarize. For an English class I believe it wasn't very good. It makes you not want to get up in the morning just to come and play on the internet and look for topics when you can do that on your own when you do decide to get up. So therefore attendance is horrible in the class overall.
