DO NOT TAKE HIM
He is a horrible teacher and he doesn't care about you at all. He is just in it because you can't do ANYTHING with a French degree.
He is pretentious and he doesn't help you with anything. If you ask a question he doesn't answer it and acts like you're an idiot. Listen to the reviews. Avoid him.

NATHAN LOVE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. Western's French major program is horrible. There are 3 total French teachers, only 2 of which have their PhD so they teach the 300 level courses. I had no other choice to take Professor Love (ironically Dr. Love).
I made an A easily in Egloff's 200 level courses and loved the classes. The next semester I went into Professor Love's class. He spoke FLUENT French (which gets better as time goes on) but teachers grammar in French, and doesn't give any examples that make sense at all. My pronunciation is horrible and I should have taken the pronunciation class that is offered but no one advised me to do so.
I finally dropped his class for a W and he was so rude. He said this is "just silly" and just absolutely short. When you ask him questions after class he stares at you like you're an idiot and answers so presigiously. His class has absolutely NO structure and as someone who loves structure in class and NEEDS it (I think foregin languages all across the board need it) I was lost. His lessons didn't make sense from one lesson to another.
Couldn't be happier to be OUT of his class. When he stops teaching here I would say that the French program is great and that you should study it at WKU. Cuisiner and Egloff are GREAT teachers. Love is what is holding it down.

Professor Love is really nice and soft spoken. He makes everything you need available on his website. A lot of class time is going over the activities that are on the website. I wouldn't recommend skipping class to do the exercises on your own. Chances are you won't get around to it, and will end up missing it anyway. There's daily quizzes that are usually taken over whatever we just did in class. He says the book's required, but I think we only used it once at the beginning of class. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!! He has everything you need on the website!!

The class description says that there is an emphasis on speaking, that is definitely not the case. There is a lot of reading (and by a lot I mean every single night), and everything is done online. There are usually quizzes every day, you might get a day off from them every now and again, but generally they're every day. Study up on verbs and conjugations. This class is all about tenses and reading (lots and lots and lots of reading). This is definitely not one of those classes that you can skip, and it is every day, not just on MWF or TR, it's all of them.

I think Dr. Love is a great professor who really understands the interworkings of the French language. This class was set up in a way that made it easy to learn a lot. We would practice speaking in class and take quizzes weekly with an oral portion to turn in online and a written portion to do in class. We then had to phonetically transcribe a poem and recite it in front of the class as an end-of-semester culminating project. Once you learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (which is not absurdly difficult), the rest of the course is all downhill from there. My French pronunciation was markedly improved by the end of the course.

Come to class, learn what he is teaching, make an A. Quizzes are designed to prove you understood what he taught in class. Tests are basically cumulative quizzes. So if comes to class and learns the material, it'll be easy.

Dr. Love is a great teacher. When you first get the book (written in French), you don't see how you'll manage. I took it on the bi-term and loved it! Pay attention in class, do the homework, and STUDY the test format he gives you. Highly recommend!!!

Dr. Love (haha!) is a good professor who takes an honest interest in getting you to learn. There are tons of quizzes, which are curved and help you to better understand and apply the information. His grading is very difficult, I had an A until the last day and then did okay on the final and lost it. There is only a final and a midterm, which creates more pressure, especially in a subject where studying techniques are a little different. Nonetheless, outside studying of various links and items from the book will help to create better understanding of course topics and better exam grades. It is not a class in which you can ignore it outside of class and outside of test time--a little extra studying can help you go a long way.

You don't have to go to class, but it is really helpful because everything that shows up on the quizzes and tests is stuff you've gone over in class...pretty much exactly. Also, it's a good idea to actually do the onlilne homework because that stuff shows up on the quizzes and tests as well. Overall, Mr. Love is a very nice guy. This class is not the most exciting, but it's completely passable.

My opinions of this class are somewhat mixed. I'll admit that Dr. Love certainly knows his stuff when it comes to the French language, but I don't feel that I was prepared well enough for his class, even after taking French for two years in high school. He focuses more on speaking the language than anything else, which can be difficult if you lack experience in that field. Dr. Love rarely ever speaks English in his class; he explains everything in French, but will translate for anyone who doesn't comprehend. He reviews extensively over everything that one would learn in high school, then moves on to more complicated topics. He gives quizzes for almost each time that class meets, but they are all pretty simple. The hardest aspect of the midterm/final is the speaking section, but if you follow the review in class and practice some on your own, then you should be okay. He is a good teacher, and is understanding and helpful, but I can see where someone would find the class difficult.

Maybe its just me, but I found nathan love endlessly fascinating. You can tell he has a passion for language in general, not just french necessarily, so in that capacity he is rediculously knowledgable. Not only can he answer any question about the french language, he can explain the linguistics and history behind it. His class is mostly just a LOT of quizzes, which aren't terribly difficult, and a midterm and final, both of which he reviews extensively for. I did have a lot of high school french, and I can see how he might be a little fastpaced for some, but he responds to emails very quickly and maintains a detailed website that tracks all of his classes daily.

Dr. Love is an amazing teacher. I did not take French in high school like everyone else in my class did, so I was afraid I would be behind. But he really makes the class understandable to everyone as long as you attend and study/do homework like you should. He loves quizzes, but they are easy as long as you pay attention in class. The worst part about the class is the speaking part on the test/final, but he grades it pretty lightly as long as you speak in French and try to communicate. I would definately recommend him as a teacher!!

My biggest complaint about this class is that Dr. Love doesn't seem to care at all about it or his students. Besides that, the class is pretty difficult, especially if you don't study. Going to class and looking over the stuff he puts on his website helps a lot. I'm taking him again only because once you understand how his tests work and how to study, you pretty much know what to expect. This class is not a good choice if you want an easy A.

Nathan love is the worst teacher i've ever had in my whole life. WKU should really look in to keeping teachers like this off our campus, just look at all the poor reviews. His class might be easy if you know some french, but his teaching style doesn't even make you want to come to class to look at him, let alone listen. He's rude, unorganized, insulting and arrogant. He straight up lied to one of my felllow students about quizzes, sent the whole class an email saying class was cancelled on a test day and that the test would be changed to a different date and then when we came to class the day before the changed date, he popped the test on us, completly disregarding what he had told us in the email. WKU get rid of this teacher and send him to France

This class was easy for me b/c I had French in HS (but couldn't remember half of it). If you haven't had French before, it might be difficult b/c he speaks it in class a lot. You have oral exams right before your written ones, so pronunciation is important in this class. The final is cumulative in the sense that you have to remember certain verbs, etc. for the duration of the class to do well on the final.

If you haven't had french before he can be kinda difficult. You have to do TONS of worksheets! But the cool thing is that for each chapter you have a certain day to get them all in, which gives you plenty of time to finish them. And if you turn them in early he'll grade them and you get as many chances as you need to correct em. If you've had french before be prepared to fall asleep every so often. He teaches a lot but for beginners it's quick and people that already know some of the language it can kinda drag on some days. He always has a speaking exam before every written exam, it lasts about 3 minutes, so if you can speak 3 minutes worth of french you're good. I recommend getting the old edition of the textbook b/c it's a lot cheaper and he gives pages for both editions. Good luck!

Any foregn language is going to be hard! Love was not a horrible teacher he is just kind of dry. If your a self propelled student this would be the class for you. There isnt much interaction or lesson of the class you just go through the book. If you have taken french 3 or more in highschool you should be fine just give alitte extra effort for the midterm and final because those are the only grades you have.

This guy is extremly insane and arrogant. He lived in france, and expects the world to understand french as he does. From day one, he spoke entirely in french. He gives about 5-6 quizes a week. (THATS IF U MEET 2 DAYS A WEEK) His tests consist of 5 parts. ( Oral, Written, Reading, Listening, Comprehension) and they are extremely hard. The oral exam lasts 5 minutes, and you have to speak entirely in french. If u speak english, FAIL! He is such a prick, I would not reccoment him, unless you are fluent in french, because you almost have to be, to understand a thing he teaches.

Coming into this class, I had two semesters of French under my belt but quickly found myself sinking. He speaks French right from the git go but will translate things students don't understand or new material 'occasionally'. Unless you've had a few years of French and understand spoken French well, I do not recommend this teacher. Most info/notes are online and all assignments are posted via blackboard and/or his site. Knowledge of verbs and their conjugations needed. Speaking French is part of your exams. Not a class for the weak.
Easy class if you know your French. Comprenez-vous?

Dr. Love knows his stuff. His teaching methods are easy to follow and understand. He provides extra channels for you to study from if you choose to use them. He's fair in his grading. He's willing to answer any questions. You do have to take an active part in learning the language if you want to do well in this class. (That should be a given in any language class). There is an oral part to every test so you have to be able to understand questions asked in French and respond in French. Overall I liked the class, and built on what I learned in two years of high school French.

Mr. Love is the worst professor I have ever had in the two years of college here at Western. He doesn't explain and goes WAY to fast and expects to much from a begining French course. All of my friends that have taken him have recieved F's as well. I took this course over with Ms. Egloff and currently have an A!!!!

I actually enjoyed Dr. Love. I thought he was a real nice man. I took this class in the summer and maybe thats why it might have been easier. I learned a lot in there in a short amount of time. It was a lot easier than I expected and I had no experience with French until this class. So if you take it in the summer you will enjoy. I recommend it.

I've taken a bit of French before, so this class was pretty much cake. Some of my classmates found it difficult, even after a semester or two of French. So unless you've had a couple of years of French be weary of Love. Must be proficient in -er, -re, -ir, irregulars, present, imperfect and passe compose, as they make up 4/5 of this course. If you understand the basics and know quite a few verbs (including meaning, and all conjugations), then this class should be a breeze. There are quizes everyday, but they help more than hurt. They are only on material covered the previous day, and really help when test time comes around.

I don't recommend this teacher. I did well in this class because I took 4 years of French in high school. If you know the language pretty well, you'll get a good grade because of what you already learned. The disadvantage to that is that IT GETS REALLY BORING!! He doesn't really have a teaching method and gives you French videos to watch the entire semester - which you only understand if you have a good background in French.

The teacher is the biggest prick I have ever met. He tests by committee (he relies on a board of other teachers to come up with the tests.) Often, he doesn't go to those meetings and can't tell the board what his students have and haven't learned - thus resulting in tests over subjects that his students have not studied. He gives a study guide before the test and spends most of the class before a test explaining things on the study guide that he hasn't taught yet. Not to mention, he is extremely arrogant and will not admit that he is wrong. Add to this the fact that he is not that great of a teacher and the class is a dangerous GPA wrecker.
