The class tended to be small, as towards of the end of the semester people stopped coming. Majority of the notes were from powerpoints posted on BB. The exams were mulitiple choice taken from the test bank of the book which made the wording difficult, but when everyone does bad on the exam, she offers extra credit and a curve at the end of the semester. 30% of the course is made up of HW assignments that are mostly math based. The class was fairly boring and it felt like the prof gave up after none of the students seemed to care about the class.

I joined this class two weeks into the semester, and Professor Carey was wonderful to let me in, but what wasn't wonderful was the fact that even though I kept my books open during this online class, I couldn't pass them for the life of me. Maybe Economics is something you can teach yourself, and I surely hope so, because Carey doesn't offer much help if you get behind or a little bit confused. if you're someone who can simply read something, do a few problems and completely understand it, then power to ya, go for this class. If not, do yourself a favor and take it in person rather than online and avoid Cathy Carey at all costs.

Dr. Carey is a nice person and is available outside class. However, she isn't a great teacher. She did not seem well prepared for most classes and had difficulty answering some of the questions raised by students.
Although not required, it did help to attend class and take notes. However, it was necessary to read the textbook. The three exams consisted of multiple choice questions and some math problems. The questions came primarily from the textbook publisher and some were not covered in the lectures. Dr. Carey did make it clear before the tests that we were responsible for all material whether covered in class or not. There were also homework assignments that consisted of a few problems from the text. She offered some extra credit opportunities on the exams. Graduate students had to write a paper and present it to the class to get graduate credit.
If you were willing to do some work on your own, especially reading the textbook, the class wasn't too bad. Unlike some classes and professors, you couldn't get the majority of the course by just attending the lectures. Although not a terrible experience, I would choose a different professor before taking another of Dr. Carey's courses.

She knows what she is talking about but she can't really explain it to other people. Alot of times she rambles on about nothing and excepts you to know it for a "possible" test question. She doesn't do a review for her test so anything in the book or that is covered in class might or might not be on the test. She is pretty boring.

This is the only professor in the econ faculty that is poor at teaching(imo) . I have had her for two classes and both times the entire class was confused and upset with the experience. She usually dodges questions asked about the material because she is unaware of the answer. Alot of material on test is never covered in class and you must read all the chapters to do well; this lead most students having a better understanding of the material than the instructor. Needless to say do all you can to avoid this lady....

Carey is a nice person, and I believe she could be a good teacher...if she really knew what she was talking about. I'm not sure she does. Every class period, she makes at least one mistake. She always tries to play it off and excuse herself somehow, but I've had a lot of Econ classes and never had any professor mess up half as much as she does.
Class isn't mandatory, so our attendance has been horrible. I think we had about 5 people in class one day, and I can't blame anyone for skipping. The material is fairly dry, and a long of times she reviews things she has covered from the previous chapter.
There are 400 points total. 3 exams worth 100 points each, which consist of about 40 MC and 5 problems. Then there is a portfolio project worth 100 points due the last day of class. You have to analysis 15 journal articles from the Wall Street Journal. I suggest getting a head start on these during the semester, because it's a real pain if you put it off until the last week of classes when you have so much other stuff going on as well.

This was one of the hardest courses I have EVER taken. In class it all makes sense, but the tests are worded very tricky. I liked that everyday Dr. Carey pulled up the Wall Street Journal at the beginning of class to talk about current economic events. She would say that she thought it was more important to look at current economic happenings related to what we were learning for that class rather than to just go strictly through the book. It helps to learn what the professor is teaching when the material is applied in real life examples.
She gave participation points every once in a while just for being in class since she does not take attendance. Tests were easy and had extra credit.

Although attendance isn't mandatory, you definitely shouldn't miss a class. There is a lot of current events that are discussed or other random things she feels like talking about. These things will show up on the exams, so you don't want to be caught off guard. She also asks a lot of questions from the book, some of which we never went over, so definitely read the chapters before each exam.
Overall, I liked Carey. She is a nice person and wants everyone to succeed. However, she can be confusing when she goes over problems because sometimes it seems like she doesn't even understand them. The class was usually interesting when we were discussing various current events, but when she lectured over the book, it was a downright snoozefest. Painfully boring.

Mrs. Carey has definitely not missed her calling. She is an awesome teacher. I went into Econ hoping for a C at best and came home with an A. Although she as a teacher doesn't require you to attend class, you will hurt your grade if you don't. She takes the info in your text book and puts it into laymens terms and makes you really identify it to everyday life. She offers bunches of extra credit in order to help those students who do struggle. There are lots of notes in her class, but she is writing it all on the board for us and with us to make sure we get the important stuff. She is an absolutely fair, wonderful teacher, and takes her students progress to heart. Econ is a tough class no matter who your teacher is. Take Cathy Carey and at least have a professor who wants you to succeed and get it.

Dr. Carey is very knowledgable about economics, however, I felt like she was almost too knowledgable to teach this class. If you ask her a question in class, she beats around the bush and never really gives you a good answer. Our second tests class average was a 59. I studied for each test very well and in advance and never made higher than a C. There are only 3 tests in the class that compose your final grade and many times the material on the test wasnt the same as what she went over in class. Almost all of my friends have had this class adn I feel there are MANY better econ teachers.

At the beginning of the semester she gave very bad advice on how to obtain the textbook and the MyEcon Lab subscription needed for the class. From experience, don't take any of her suggestions. Just go to the bookstore and get the needed materials from there.
The class material wasn't extremely hard as long as you keep up with it. All homework is done online with MyEcon Lab. One good thing is she relates everyday topics with the discussions and makes it interesting and relates topics and issues to college students. Extra credit is available. Overall she is a good teacher and very headstrong at times.

O.K. I graduated two years ago but I still feel the need to post a note here. I graduated with a 3.89 GPA big deal you say well read on. I was not only a student of Mrs.Careys but she was also my academic advisor. Her classes were very poorly constructed and very random, testing was a nightmare to say the least. Keep in mind I took her classes in the spring of 2000 and I still remember them 6 years later. I had a graduation deadline set forth by a my employer, she not only ill advised me in the courses I needed to graduate on time but wasted 9 hours of my time, thats three classes. The experience was so bad that I changed my major and graduated with an entirely different degree. I managed to get As in all of the classes I took of hers but one and the one class I did not get the A in I actually failed now you tell me a person with my GPA and all As in three other classes taking 22 hours suddenly fails a class, where is the problem? If I were a Freshman, hell any student for that matter, I would stay far away from this woman. There are many many great econ profs at Western so find a different route. My wife whom also had her for several classes agrees whole heartedly with me, oh and by the way she has her masters from Western.

Out of the three classes I've taken in the Econ department (150, 202, and this one) this was the easiest of them all. Carey's class just consists of her giving PowerPoint presentations for the notes and then drawing graphs up on the board and explaining what they mean and the factors that shift them. However, she never appeared ready for class since she wouldn't be sure what was on the slides for each day of lecture.
Our class tried to use the "clickers" that are on a pilot program around campus but that quickly went down the toilet and it messed up her grading percentage since it was supposed to count for 25 pts. This ended up resulting in attendance counting for extra credit which greatly helped some people's grades out.
Although you don't have to purchase the textbook you do have to buy a code to use an Aplia website that has homework posted on it and it costs $60. The website also has the chapters of the textbook on it so you can print them off and read them if you like. I thought some of the Aplia questions were unfair since we never covered some of the material in class but she offered 101 questions throughout the semester on there and you only needed to get 75 of them right to get an A on that section of the course.
For our class the grading scale criteria was out of 400 pts. You had four exams worth 100 pts. each but you are able to drop your lowest exam (or if you ace the first three exams or get a grade to your satisfaction on them you can avoid the final), 75 pts. come from the Aplia assignments (where she offered 101 questions and if you got over 75 of them right then you got extra credit), and 25 pts. for attendance/clickers which got converted into extra credit too.
I thought all of the exams were fair and they are all multiple choice. If you study the factors that shift graphs, know how to shift the graphs, and some definitions then you should be able to get good grades on them. She also doesn't curve the grades.
I think Dr. Carey is a smart woman but I didn't find her to be an effective instructor. I believe if I had not taken 150 then I would've had a harder time with this class and also would've struggled if I hadn't self-taught myself economics in high school.
However, if you already know economics, especially how macroeconomic systems work, then take this class and you'll get an easy A.

The class is not really that difficult, but Carey just does not teach in my opinion. She would just read the notes from the power point slides and draw a ton of graphs on the board. When it came to test time, you might see one graph or need to draw one, but that was it. She is a nice lady who wants to help, but I dont think she can convey her knowledge to the class properly.

Mrs. Carey seemed to know what she was talking about until closer to the end of class where she would realize that the stuff she wrote / had drawn on the board was incorrect. The test are extremely hard and she doesn't curve or offer any assistance in the form of study guides. Don't ask her about it either, or she will call you out in front of the class for trying to take advantage of her. She easily gets off the subject and gets upset thereafter if the classs is behind where they should be. She is very intelligent but seems to lack the communication abilities to teach a class properly.

Carey has to be one of the most boring professors I've ever had! I could barely stay awake for the hour and 20 minutes of class. She does a horrible job of explaining anything, and when you ask a question she never really gives you an answer. Her tests were ridiculous and made me wonder if I was even in the same class! She does offer extra credit for Wall Street Journal quizzes, and I definitely recommend doing them!!! When I emailed her about the class average being a D on the second test she said that was normal and there was nothing she could do about it. I do not recommend this class with Carey!

Very caring professor. Will help you if you need it. Good thing is, you shouldn't need it. Very easy class. Probably the easiest I've had at Western and I really hated the material we discussed. I rarely went to class, and only studied the night before on every test and made A's on all of them. Some people had a few problems, but I can't understand why. She offers a lot of extra credit. If you are a Broadcast Major and this is a necessary course, take her.
I said I didn't go to class all that often, but that can be a drawback. She gives unannounced in-class assignments that count for five points. Good news... the extra credit opportunities also count for five points. I missed quite a few in-class assignments, did five EC things (I think) and made a comfortable A. Easy class.

I had never had an economics course until I took this one, and it was pretty tough for me to understand. Actually, I still don't understand it. It's all about theory and "what if" ideas. Mrs. Carey knows all about it though, and she's willing to help you if you don't understand it. You really have to put some effort into this class if you want a good grade out of it. I had it at 8 a.m. so we got extra points just for showing up on certain days. You MUST read the book and study the slides and understand it, because if you don't know it by the end of the first test, you're probably screwed. Written with Miller Lite in hand.

Stay away, stay FAR away.
Actually, Dr. Carey doesn't seem to be a bad teacher, and the subject matter of this course isn't bad either. They don't mix, though. This is the first time the course has been offered in a while, and this is Dr. Carey's first time teaching it. It shows.
You go to class. She works some long, complicated problem on the board. You copy it down. Someone spots an error in it somewhere, so you erase most of it and re-do the problem. That's the class. The actual content of the course consists of calculus and algebra that is relevant to economics.
The tests? Ha ha ha! They take forever and are brutal. There's homework, which she collects, that can lessen some of the damage. And we met on MW -- Fridays were optional sessions in which she answered questions and helped you get caught up if you needed it. That was very helpful and provided a nice little change of pace from the usual rigors of class.
I don't think she's a bad teacher, but she simply wasn't right for this course, espcially having not taught it in the past. I think that someone from the math department would make a much better teacher because they're accustomed to teaching this type of stuff, and Dr. Carey isn't.

Carey is a good professor, but not a great one. She is definitely a fair teacher, which I think is very important. However, this class is by no means an easy A. You have to know your notes forwards and backwards and UNDERSTAND concepts, not just memorize definitions and terms. The class was very boring most of the time. But, she does post her notes on blackboard, so you don't have to write everything down. Attendance is not "mandatory", but she does give "in-class assignments" that can only be done if you are actually in class. Plus, if you don't go to class I highly doubt you would do well. The final isn't really mandatory but everything you learn from day one is used again and again so in essence your being tested over the same stuff but with more detail. She's a good teacher but she won't do you any favors. You stay until the exact minute its time to go. There's no study guides and no homework. I recommend reading your notes over and making flash cards. They really help. She posts all the notes on Blackboard but to save your own @ss go to class. You won't get it just printing those notes off the computer. She doesn't mind explaining anything to you and she's very friendly but she aims to teach. There are three tests, including a final, which are mainly multiple choice with a few word problems at the end where you draw out graphs and charts. The book really isn't necessary if you go to class everyday. At the end, she said she curves the final grade if you haven't missed more than 2 or 3 in class assignments. Dr. Carey is a wonderful teacher. I hate economics, but I really like her. She is interested in what she teaches, and is excited about it. I would highly reccommend her for anyone who hates economics like myself. She is very helpful and really nice.

You don't have to take a lot of notes if you print them off her web page and there are 4 hmwk. assignments. She's okay, but the tests are kind of hard.
