At the beginning of this course, I was worried, as it was hard to understand her dialect, being from Japan. After a couple of days, however, she was very easy to understand. She provides great examples in her presentations that helps to understand the full meaning of a term, rather than simply memorizing it. She is very kind and understanding. She gives a total of 4 exams, including the final, and 4 quizzes, of which she drops the lowest grade. She doesn't require the textbook, as she stated she "knows how the economy is." I would definitely recommend Ms. Norman, as she is a sweetheart and knows exactly what she is talking about.

HATED THIS CLASS!
She was a super sweet lady, but the class was super boreing and hard to understand when all the explinations sound the same and every class there are powerpoints after powerpoints. Her accent wasn't the major problem, just another reason it was hard to pay attention.

Many people complain about Professor Norman's accent but it is honestly not a problem. She teaches directly from power point slides. She does not post them to Blackboard so you do have to attend class but exams and quizzes are directly from the power points. Professor Norman is a very sweet lady and a wonderful teacher.

Dr. Norman is a very sweet lady. She's japanese, so she has a very thick accent that is difficult to understand at times. She posts all her notes on a PowerPoint, so if you write those down you'll be fine. Before each test she gives a very detailed study guide so If you are familiar with the terms you'll be fine. She takes attendance before each class, but it does not affect you. Overall I would highly recommend Dr. Norman for this class.

She has a Japanese accent, but you get used to it. She gives excelent notes, and wants you to understand the material. You have to participate in psychological researchs going on on campus that you can get done early to recieve extra credit. She gives a quiz a week before each test that only covers what was covered after the last test. She is a VERY nice lady.

This is a very easy class. All notes are hand written during class, and all exam questions are pulled from those notes. I missed class VERY OFTEN but had friends in the class i could copy notes from (with a copy machine). I could look over the notes 1 or 2 nights before the test, and ace the test. Super easy A. The only bad part, is she is difficult to understand at first, but you get used to it.

I found this course easy, but believe me, there were people failing, so read this whole comment so you can see why I say this is an easy class. Hideko is a very nice Japanese lady, who likes to teach very much. She's really enthusiastic and always cheery, so she'll brighten your day. The class is comprised of 5 exams (including final, which is just another exam), each covering 3 or 4 chapters of the text (not required, but recommended). She will lecture about the topic in question, and then show a PowerPoint slide of the relevant definitions, or pictures to illustrate her point, or charts, etc. WRITING DOWN THE DEFINITIONS IS THE KEY TO THE WHOLE CLASS. The definitions that she puts up are the entirety of the content on the exams, with the book and her lectures only being supplemental to helping you understand the topic, make examples, etc. Seriously, just take the notes, memorize the definitions (by heart), and you'll get an A if you've truly memorized the defs. Being a Computer Science major, I know about memorizing formulas, etc, so this made this memorization easy, so I got 100/100/100/100/102 on the tests, (104 max on each, 2 pts per question ~ 50 questions + 2 bonus), and 90/100/80/100/100 on the quizzes (without studying). I think with the extra credit from doing 11 study board hours I got something like a 102 average in this class, which is attainable, and there were about 5 people who did almost as good in the class besides me, so studying and knowing the defs is doable. Don't think this class is work-less though, in that there are 50 or so defs for each test, so just work hard, enjoy Hideko's lectures, and get an "easy" A.

Mrs. Norman is a wonderful Professor I would recommend her to anyone!! She is Japanese in case you didn't know, but she is adoreable and will help you with anything. She knows she has an accent and will repeat anything you need to hear again, but after a few classes you can understand her and she puts everything on powerpoint that you need to know for the test so even if you don't adjust to her accent it won't affect your grade. She is always telling you to relax before tests, and she doesn't try to be tricky with her questions they are mostly just straight forward. She offers extra credit on all of her tests including the final and she also allows you to earn up to 6 study board credits for extra credit also, so if your willing to put in the time you will do great. I studied for about 45 minutes for each test and the lowest grade I received was a 92. If you need to take Psy 199 take Mrs. Norman!!

You can also sign up and do some studyboards for extra credit in the class if you need it, but you can only get a maximum of 6 credits. There are no quizzes in her class and she emails you a study guide before every test. Mrs. Norman is a great professor and I would definitely recommend her to any student! She is great!

I will admit on the first day of this class I freaked out. I considered dropping the class because I intially could not understand what she was saying. However, as the semester went on it got much better. You get used to it a lot faster than you would think. Besides that you do not really have to worry about hearing her. She shows power points the entire class period and that is basically what is on the test. If you take all the notes and go over them a few nights before the test you will do fine. She gives a study guide that helps to prepare for test. The class could get extremely boring, but a few things I found interesting. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT BUYING A BOOK!!! You will not use it. I never read a chapter and made an A or B on every test. She also dropped our lowest test or quiz grade. Test are 50 questions m.c. and quizes are 10 question m.c. She did offer some minor extra credit.

Hideko Norman is an easy teacher. She's from Japan, and sometimes she is a little difficult to understand, but that's the only bad thing about her. All the important information she puts on a power-point slide, and you copy your notes from that. She sends out study guides for all the major tests, and what's on the guide is what will be on the test. All the quizzes were announced ahead of time. This class was a little boring, but if your only taking this class to fullfill a gen ed requirement and you want an easy A, then take this teacher!

This class absolutely bored me out of my skull every single time I was there. The first few weeks I'd walk in...armed with caffeine and sugar in an attempt to stay awake, but with the lights off as we were taking notes, I couldn't force myself to stay awake, and believe me I tried. Finally I resorted to knitting or reading during class and writing down whatever she put up on Powerpoint. Could never understand a word she said. Didn't touch my textbook after the first week of class, and pulled an A on every one except the one I decided not to study for at all. It really was painful to sit through her class, although I am sure she is a very nice person, I just could not stand the class.

Psychology is my major so therefore I naturally enjoyed this class, but to anyone looking for something easy, this is a good class to take. She is from Japan, but she's extremely aware of her cultural differences and makes every effort to make sure you understand her. Her language barrier isn't a big deal. You learn to adjust and after a couple of weeks you know exactly what she's saying. She's very energetic and on occasion, has a few good jokes. I must admit, it does take some interest in psychology to not find this class a little redundant and boring...but it's a great learning experience. Not only do you learn about theories and experiments, you also learn a little about yourself.

I'd suggest that every student taking this course should take Mrs. Norman. She's this tiny little Japanese lady that makes the class bareable first thing in the morning. She's got an accent, but if you actually pay attention to her, you'll understand what she's saying. And even if you don't, all of her test material comes from her notes, which are very well organized.
You show up to class, or at least get the notes from someone else, and you'll do great. You don't have to read a single chapter, she never pulled pop-quizzes on us, and the exams were fairly easy. Study the notes, make an effort, and you'll have an A.
The final was a breeze, only over the last section of the material, and she really cut us a deal with grading and dropping test scores. Be a good class to her and she'll treat you well.

Professor Norman really does know her stuff when it comes to Psychology. However, the downfall of her is she is from Japan and speaks broken English (I guess you could call it). It's hard to understand her at first but over the course of the semester, it gets easier and easier. She is very nice and will help if needed. There are only 4 grades in the class--and they all come from exams. It's not too difficult, but you have to be willing to take the time to study for the exams. She does assign pages to read but you don't need to do it...she will cover everything in her class. (but if you don't understand what she is saying, you can always look it up in the book) Overall, I liked the class and I learned a lot. She is fun to take.

Mrs. Norman is so cool! She is japanese, so it's kind of cool to hear her speak. She will explain anything you ask her to, and she is always excited and ready to teach. I had spanish all throughout high school, and I didn't know anything about the japanese language. I found this class to be easier than my high school spanish class! She gives some worksheets for homework that are pretty easy and help your grade out tremendously, if you take the couple minutes to do them. She is a very understanding and nice lady. She does require attendance, there is a cumalitive final, and you do have to pay attention in class for the most part, but hey it's a language class! You'll love her!

Like she will tell you in the class, Japanese is a relatively easy language to learn. If you study, memorise, and work on your pronounciation, this class won't be a problem for you. For her tests, you will mainly have to translate Japanese into English or vice versa. Once you get a good hold on Japanese grammar and sentence structure, you should do fine. Besides that, you just have to know your vocabulary. You can't just study stuff for one test and then forget it; you must know it all for the next and subsequent tests as well. She gives quizzes after every chapter too. The Hiragana characters you will have to learn are tricky and confusing, so I suggest you purchase the workbook she recommends and start early. Practice as much as you can. She followed the coursebook directly with exceptions to things that can't be learned in a textbook, like Japanese culture and how they speak now in relation to how they did in the past. Professor Hideko Norman is a very enjoyable woman. I plan to take her for Japn 102. If you ever need any tutoring please email me at [email protected].

I think she would be a wonderful teacher if she spoke to Japaneese students. I'm not trying to be mean but seriously, if you have to have her then go ahead and drop the class because you can't understand her. She has to stop in the middle of class to think of the English words. This is pyschology we are talking about, not math. So its difficult to learn. I rarely went to class. Instead, i just took my own notes out of the book.

I learned more in that class than I learned in two years for french. She is an awesome teacher and Japanese is extremely easy!! She is always willing to help you with tutoring to improve your grade. I would highly recommend her and the class.

Dr. Norman is a great professor with a good heart. She wants all of her students to do well in her class. She is always willing to help. Learning to write and memorize some of the Japanese characters was tough, but it was worth it.

It may be deceptive when I say that the course was difficuly... I do not think that the subject was so difficult as the act of learning it from someone who speaks very poor English.
Several times the class had to pause for minutes at a time while she tried to tell us what she was talking about, but her words were unintelligible.
Also, whenever questions were asked, her normal response was to ignore the question and simply repeat her last statement, whatever it may have been. Not a good atmosphere for learning, IMHO.

She gives a study guide. If you know the terms on the guide it is easy. She explains things very well. She does have an accent, but you get used to it.
