I loved the professor! He's funny and entertaining, and he knows his stuff. However, he talks really fast and it's hard to keep up with the notes. I would recommend looking at sparknotes online for the tests because he puts alot of quotes on the test an u need to know who said them. I liked the class but it was harder than i thought it was gonna be. if you're looking for an easy A, I would take a different class.

Dr. Ruff shows a lot of favoritism, so if you don't get on his good side it can actually hurt you in the long run. he is a funny person though. You don't have to have a textbook for this class but you do have to take notes. This is strictly just a lecture class so if you have a short attention span this is not the class for you. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone not even my worse enemy.

this clas is pretty easy. there isn't a textbook so you have to go to class!! there are a couple of plays you have to go to and the exams are pretty easy if you go to class and look over your notes before you test. we watched videos and read a book over a play. if you have an a average before the final with the paper over the book then you do not have to take the final. he is a good teacher and takes times to explain everything. take him if you get the chance

I would have to say that Ruff really makes you earn ur grade. He's a nice guy but way too talkative and a busybody. He doesnt use powerpoint or blackboard and makes notes very difficult to take in his course. I would only reccommend him to students who go to class everyday and CAN really REALLY LISTEN CAREFULLY!!!!!

Ruff has a very tough class to be gen ed. He does not use a text book for the class so all of your tests come strictly from his lectures. He jumps from subject to subject and is hard to follow to take notes. My class got very easily confused about what he was talking about. His tests were a lot tougher than I thought they would be. He tells you what you need to study but it doesn't help much because he is so vague. He is a nice guy but I would not reccomment taking him unless you just have to.

Dr. Ruff is a great guy. He is very nice and a sweet man. He travels alot so he appreciates his teaching more because he has actually experienced it. However, Ruff has one of those classes where you have to pay attention to what he says because 9 times out of 10, it will be on the test. You WILL watch a lot of movies, like musicals, so be prepared for that. (the movies are pretty good though) Dr. Ruff will ask questions to students one on one in class, so make sure you are paying attention. By the end of the first week, he will know a good portion of the classes first name. Personal interaction is VERY important with Dr. Ruff. All in all, good class and I did learn alot, just make sure you pay attention and don't miss the class alot.

He is old. He goes over the same thing over and over and over. The class is not hard as long as you come and pay attention but you will fall asleep in there at least once. The only thing that is hard is the papers you write. No one in my class got above a 40% on the first one. Also, if you have an A after the last test he won't make u take the final, but the final was just to write another paper. If you have to take him don't be scared it is not hard but just very boring.

Ruff can be a pain in the ass or a nice guy. It depends, he is a pain as a professor because his notes are hell, you write the same things down dozens of times and still get them wrong. But as far as a person he is alright. His musicals you have to watch for a final could made anybody want to commit suicide, the plays suck too.

Theatre Appreciation right...an easy A. Well not with Proffessor Ruff. This is because of his inability to stay on topic with what he is teaching. He has no outline so you have no idea what is going to be on the test. Speaking of the tests they are worded in a way that half my class that new the material missed the question just because the questions were so weird. Nice guy but I wouldnt recommend taking him.

Ruff's class is actually enjoyable and interesting, he takes the time to try and learn everyone's name. As for taking notes, he talks and you write very quickly. He does provide a study guide on the syllabus for some of the test. The test are hard you MUST study. Other than the test the class is great.

I loved Dr. Ruff. I think he is an amazing man, and an interesting teacher. Notes are important, and so is attendance. It's not a hard class to go to. And there is incentive to go...you are allowed 3 absences and if you don't take them, that's 3 points added to your final grade. If you get a 90 in the class, you don't have to take the final. Missing days means that you miss notes, and that's how you do well on his exams.
We watched a lot of movies, and would get out of class just because it was too hot out, or he just didn't feel like talking anymore.
He is brilliant, hilarious, and is usually only there for the fall semesters, so take him then!

Ok...so here's my deal with Dr.Ruff. He is a really great teacher, i mean, he knows what he's doing and if you love theater and its what you want to major in then take him...he's written several books and worked with many famous people. But he is terrible at tell you one thing and then completely doing the opposite. i went through the entire class thinking i was doing jsut fine and even when i asked him if i was doing ok...he would tell me i was doing great and not to worry about anything because he would bump me up in the end...my end result...yea...i got a D!!! So much for listening and confiding in the professor!!! Oh! and he puts things on the test that you barely went over in class. It's like the things he drilled into during the lecture doesnt matter...only the things he like barely mumbles...

Dr. Ruff is a pitiful professor. His lectures are unclear and confusing. Discussion usually ends up being 3-5 people who become his pets and the rest are just there. We had tests covering information that was not discussed in our section of the class but in others. The information he gives changes when you find some flaw to the logic and question him. I am a junior taking all 300 level courses except for this one. Four A's and a C in this course. I regret taking the course. I've heard James Brown in much better.

I do not recommend Dr. Ruff at all! First of all, I took 18 hours and made A's in every one of my upper level classes, and got a B in theatre apprec.! He can't remember what he tells one class, so he puts stuff on the test that he never even went over in your class, but did in another class. He totally picks favorites, to the point that it is annoying because he's always talking to those few people about stuff that doesn't even pertain to the class. Also, he is really rude in the way he interupts students. He'll call on you, and when you start to give an answer, he'll just interupt and start talking again with whatever he wants to say. I couldn't believe how rude it was! Lastly, he gets really defensive and mad if you question him about your grade or a question on the test. We got our tests back, and 5 students just got up and walked out of class in the middle of the period because they were so mad, and there was no talking to him about it. You can take notes for an hour, and still have no clue what he's talking about, because nothing he says is clear or understandable, and he words things completely different on the test. Also, last test there were 2 answers that could be right, he even said that in class, and when people started arguing with him about it, he just kept saying "okay, you win, stop arguing," but still wouldn't count it correct. I really regret taking this dumb class that pulled my GPA down when I could have taken another teacher for gen. ed.

Mr. Ruff is a nice man, just not the best teacher. the subject matter of the notes was easy, however, he doesnt do the best job of explaining it and somehow manages to make the tests difficult to do well on. He lets you use an index card on most of the tests and even with all of my notes on the index card, i was never able to make an A on one test. He also lets you drop your lowest test grade. there isno homework, just 4 or 5 tests and a final, which is non cumulative. also, the book is not necessary to buy. He goes over everything in your notes, you just have to pay attention and write down what he says. He's very passionate about what he teaches, but i would recommend taking another teacher if possible.

He asked questions like "who said this" or what quote does this belong to.. He tells us that what we go over on review day is what will be on the test, yeah of course like 5 questions, the rest he just pulled out of no where! I thought this class would be much easier than what it really turned out to be. For this to be a basic general ed, it is pretty though. Alot of times we don't go over much in class, and there is alot of information on the tests. Towards the end of the semester, tests are now only 25 questions but are 4 points each which can be tricky. Definetley harder than I though, and Dr. Ruff is funny and good to have in class, but doesn't go over the material as well as I wish he would. Pretty tough class when you aren't a theatre or music major.

AVOID THIS INSTRUCTOR!!! you will have no clue what is on the exam the exams are extremely abstract and unclear in means of questioning.

Dr. Ruff is a very interesting teacher. He LOVES what he teaches, and because of that, you learn alot. He tells you to buy the book, but don't. There may be a few questions on each test that come from the book but not enough to hurt your grade. He shows alot of videos/movies for visual learning. As long as you study your notes, you will do fine on the tests. He allows you to use a notecard on every exam. He also has alot of great stories...but don't get him started on politics, especially Bush.

Loren Ruff is a nice professor and a pretty good one too. The class is fairly interesting, although there are a quite a few days of just lecture. We took four tests, read one play, watched one movie and wrote a paper on it, went to one play, and one musical. That's where the grades came from.
The tests are of moderate difficulty, but sometimes (majority) he lets you bring a notecard with info on it to the test. We never used the textbook although he wrote the one he "uses." Also, if you get A's on all the tests leading up to the final then you don't have to take the final. However, if you don't make an A leading up to the final then one of the four tests (including possibly the final) will be dropped if it's the lowest grade.
The class was kind of big but he remembers names and makes it okay to attend. Just keep up with the reading, when covering a play, and make sure to take notes and you should do fine.

He did a good job teaching this course and it was so easy! As long as you pay attention in class and take what few notes he gives, you'll do fine. Reading over the text is a good idea but you don't have too, everything you need is in the notes. He does require you to attend a few plays during the semester and there are usually 5 questions over them on the exams but it's not hard. You might watch a movie and have to do a short paper (essay) on the plot but you do it at home and turn it in usually when you do your test.
This is really a class for someone who is into Theatre/Plays and wants to learn, otherwise, you might get bored. BUT I love it! Ruff is cool.

Dr. Ruff seems to know a little about everything, even if its wrong. He once stated in class that 1 in 3 people have aids. (the real statistic being that for each 1 person that has aids there are 3 that have it and don't know.) I didn't enjoy his class very much. I found him to talk to much, and there to be a question on the test about every little thing he said. His notes on the board are very basic and don't even cover whats really on the test for the most part. The stuff that comes out of his mouth is the imporant part. All his tests are scantron multiple choice. Attendance to plays is required because there will be questions about them on the tests. For most people the final is mandatory and not comprehensive. For people with a A average and not having missed a certain number of days you are exempt. For people missing less that a certain number of days your lowest score is dropped. I found this a difficult class because the material is not clearly presented and made out to be much harder than it should be.

the class was good, he has a passion or theatre. some notes are hard to follow, and the book doesn't help much because he is the writer and it follows his lecture word for word. he may say the book is required, but you will never use it. there is no homework. we watched a lot of movies. you can be exempt from the final exam. however, the exams are somewhat difficult. they ask about things you'll swear were never covered in class. you have to read one play, and an exam will have quotes that you have to identify from it. some of them are impossible to get and are almost as broad as " who said 'Hello.' in scene one?" on two of our exams we were allowed to use a note card for cheat sheet, but this will only depend on the mood he is in when you are reviewing for the exam. if you participate in class and make sure he knows your name you have a better chance of being exempt and getting an A.

Dr. Ruff is an awesome professor. If you have an A going in to the final and you've missed fewer than three classes, you do not have to take it. You do have to attend one student theater performance on campus during the semester. The tests are difficult, but for our class, we were able to use a notecard on the first two tests. (If you type your notes and print them really, really small, you can get every single bit of your notes on the front and back of a 3x5 card.) The class was interesting, we watched several movies during the course of the term. Dr. Ruff really seems to care about his students. Despite what may have been the rule in previous semester, the book is not required. This was announced first class. If I were you, I'd see if there is someone who would go in on purchasing a book with you. We didn't use it that much

Besides Mary Miller for Creative Writing, Dr. Ruff has been the best professor I've had all year. He allows note cards for the first few tests, allows four unexcused absences, has a lot of experience in the Theatre field (I'm not even a theatre major but I respect somebody that knows what they talk about) and entertains the class w/funny litttle anecdotes from his experience in the industry. His tests are a little tricky for multiple choice tests, but if you enjoy learning more than textbook material then you should consider him.

The class was okay. Dr. Ruff tends to get off the subject sometimes. He is a nice teacher for some students. The tests can be tricky and they are all multiple choice. If you have an A before the final, you don't have to take it. There are four tests and then the final. Don't buy the book. I didn't and I made an A. Take really good notes and pay close attention to the questions because there sometimes seems to be more than one right answer.

This class can be very boring at times. Sometimes the material that he goes over seems more like a history class than a theater class. Do not buy the book! I only opened it up once before the test and it did not help me any. As long as you go to class and take good notes, you'll do fine.

The book is a waste of your money. DO NOT buy the book. If anything share one with a friend because he does not use enough information out of the book for it to be worth eighty dollars. His lectures are extreme boring and he says the same thing over and over. You have to study for his tests though. They seem like they are going to be easy but if you don't study you will fail, I promise.

Ruff is the worst professor that I have ever taken. He is a jackass. He is a wanna be actor who never made it big so now he teaches, and he is just into that for the money. He makes you buy the book which you only need to use about 3 times the whole semester. On top of that, you can't even sell it back. He also likes to stare at girls tits and ass trying to act slick. If you got a choice, don't take this class with Ruff.

if you ever have to take theatre appreciation, don't take ruff. it is close to impossible to do well on his tests. he tells everyone to buy the book-which he wrote, and you can certainly do well in the class by copying the pages from someone else (there were only about 15 pages out of it used all semester). the reason he tells everyone that the book is mandatory is probably because he is recieving some sort of commision off it and wants to make some extra money. by the way, the book is $100 and you can't sell it back. the last time i checked, gen ed classes were supposed to be relatively easy and fun.............not this one!

DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!! DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! You will not be able to sell it back, or get ANY money at all for it-- he is a jerk like that. If you are a girl- sit up front and wear low cut shirts-- and an A is yours. If you are a guy--- make sure he knows who you are, and your name and you can get one too!

Do NOT take Dr.Ruff for anything! He is a complete jackass! He will not offer to help you but if you're a girl he'll stare down your shirts and at your butt. Please do not take him. I tried really hard in his class and I went to all of the plays. He gives you a quiz over each play. I went to them and still did badly. I've never made a

Dr. Ruff is a good teacher, even though he goes a little fast on the notes. The only complaint that I have is the same everyone else has, I paid $80-something in Spring 2001 for a book that I opened once but never really used and still got a B. And since he wrote the book and keeps making small, irrelevant changes to it, the bookstore doesn't buy it back. Other than that it was a great course.

Dr. Ruff makes the class fun. However, the tests were way too difficult for a 100 level class. It should be an easy A course, and it wasn't. He does not give accurate notes and a lot of times, the items on the test were not covered in the notes. You have to study for the tests A LOT, and sometimes studying doesn't help.

Dr. Ruff is a very nice guy and I enjoyed his class. The tests were not too difficult if you studied. However, I was VERY angry that he made our class buy an 87 dollar book that we could not sell back. We only used it one time and even then it wasn't useful. Take his class but DON'T BUY THE BOOK!!

DONT BUY THE BOOK! You will not use it, and you cant sell it back. This is not a joke! The class isnt that bad, but he rushes through information, so have your pen ready. His exams are tricky, but you should do okay if you study and come to class.

Your cost over 100 dollars and he writes it. He writes a new book every smester so you can't return it. You don't even use the book once in the class. He is a very good teacher just that he writes the book..and you can't sell it back. DON'T BUY IT!!

Dr. Ruff is a nice guy but as a teacher he blows. First of all he wrote the book (which can't be sold back) and it cost around $80. You will never use the book, but he assignes readings out of it anyway to scare students into buying it so he can benefit from the profit. He goes WAY too fast on the notes, but one benefit is that he lets students use notecards with whatever they can fit on it for the test.

Buying his book is a rip-off! Don't take him unless you are really into musical theater. Also, the book is compiled by him so he must be pocketing quite a bit each semester because he manages to change the book just enough in order to keep the bookstores from buying back the book. I now have an $80 book that is worth nothing and everybody says that this is standard procedure.

He gets carried away with too much trivia. Would have been a better class if time had been spent on how the different aspects of the theater worked.

Besides having to purchase an $80 book that you can't sell back, it was a good course. Dr. Ruff is very knowledgable on his subject and very easy to get along with. We got to use note cards on all tests, and if you had a 90 average you got out of the final.
Required to see two performances put on by the university, and are given a quiz on each. Note taking is excessive ( lots of material and dates ), but if you take good notes and pay attention in class the tests are a snap.

As of this semester, the book for this course costs $82.50 plus the two addtional paperbacks that are required. Buying the new edition means that you essentially get a book that is practically the same as the old one except there are some looseleaf pages which will make this current edition worthless when the updated version comes out as soon as his printers have it ready. Since this is his book, then he must be getting a real bonus by requiring new books be purchased. And boy does he like the girls!

The class was ok aside from the dishonesty of the professor. He required us to purchase the new version of the textbook, even though the old version was EXACTLY the same. I compared my new book with a friend's used one and found NO changes. There was about a $35 dollar difference in price there. Disregarding that, the class was a peach.

A pretty easy class, and not THAT boring. We got to use a note card on all but maybe one or two of the tests and only had one or two worksheets to turn in. We also had two on-campus performances we had to attend.
I don't know about now, but Ruff made us buy new textbooks last semester (Fall 99). He wrote both books and insisted that the new one was different. WRONG! I think he just wanted us to buy the book that was published by, I guess, his new publishing company.
