Dr. Applegate is an amazing teacher. She will help you with anything you have problems with. I highly recommend her. The class was very interesting and Dr. A made it fun. She loves to get off topic with small talk or just stuff that isn't really related, but you always learn something. Her tests are the same format, and she has killer true/false questions, so be careful. Take this class!!!

Don't take this class unless you have to have it.
It's probably the hardest class I've ever had because she makes it that way.
There are no tests, just lab reports due every week. You have to analyze thousands of artifacts.
It's impossible to analyze the artifacts during class time so you have to spend HOURS outside of class inside the lab.
Then, you will have to spend HOURS on the lab reports.
It's not that I mind doing the work, it's just that the work she demands is EXCESSIVE.
It's impossible to tackle this class in addition to other classes and life and work. IMPOSSIBLE.
She makes me regret majoring in Anthropology.
This class is boring and tedious.
There was only one A on the last lab report. Most people are getting Cs. It's a shame when straight A students are getting Cs. Don't take this class and don't major in Anth at WKU unless you don't have any other classes.

First few weeks of class is basically a review of Biological Anth, very boring. The rest of the semester is divided up into different culture areas--Egypt, Tropical Africa, Near East, etc.
Most people in my class barely passed the tests. The way she words the questions can be tricky. For instance, you have to be careful to see whether she's asking for the culture AREA, the civilization, or the time period of an object. If you take good notes, then you should do ok in this class. Hint: mark anything that she says you should know and KNOW the DATES of everything!
Sometimes her lectures were confusing/not well organized, so even if you take good notes you might not do well on tests.
Book isn't used in class, but test questions are taken from it, so you have to read carefully. Book (Fagan) was horrible too.
Research paper is required. She grades very hard, but if you meticulously follow her directions you will do ok. For instance, make sure your outline is 3 pages long and not 1 page!
Overall, this is a hard class for most people or a moderately difficult class for excellent students. For an easy world culture class take Hudepohl's Into to Cultural class (ANTH 120) instead of this class.

This was one of the most difficult and frustrating classes I've ever had. I'm a good and dedicated student but this class was enough to make anyone go crazy. Here are the reasons why:
--The textbook and lab manual were absolutely useless and a total waste of money. The book we actually needed to understand the material was only in the lab and there was only one copy.
--There weren't enough skeletal or lab instruments materials for each student. Some were broken and incomplete.
--Her instructions were so complicated and difficult it was almost as if she did it on purpose. This is the main reason the class was awful. Nothing was clear.
--Labs take way longer than the class period so be prepared to spend hours outside of class in the lab.
--She seemed too busy to adequately help each student.
--The lab assistant was no help at all.
--Her lab section of the exams was impossible. Noone did well. She seemed to think it was acceptable for the class average to be a C.
BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT take this class if you have never had an Anthropology course before. Dr. Applegate is a very sweet lady, but this course is TOUGH. We had in class notes, webnotes, and book reading we had to study for each test. Dr. Applegate does do a study guide for each test, thankfully. If she didn't, I probably would have failed the course. Her tests are VERY difficult. She puts a lot of information in each section. There is also an 8 to 10 page research paper that's due at the end of the semester. I would recommend this class for people with Anthropology majors.

this class should be an easy intro level but Dr. A is a super hard grader and usually about the dumb things. prepare for boredom because her idea of a stimulating class is a powerpoint slideshow, and it's every single day except for the 4 labs. oh and if yer lucky its at 8:00am. AWFUL.

Dr. A is a great professor and you can really tell that she loves to teach. She is very willing to work with you if you have any problems. The tests can be difficult though, but there is a lot of extra credit opportunities to make up for it. You really need to be interested in archaeology and past cultures if you want to do well.

I took this class as a gen ed class, Im a business major. I withdrew after the first month. If you are not an anthropology major dont take the class. Most of the people in the class were anth majors and she taught the class like everyone was. This class is way too difficult for gen ed save your time and take something else.

The class was a little boring, but then again it was a 100 level class. Dr. Applegate is a nice enough person, but her grading is outrageous. She is heavy on lists that include 5-10 answers and if you get one wrong the entire question is wrong. Read--no partial credit on tests. The class isn't bad, just frustrating when you look over the tests.

I took Archaeology as purely an interest course, and though at times I found the course interesting, I almost wish I hadn't. I am an A student and was really surprised when I ended up with an A in the end. I made 80s on all of the tests other than the final because she grades so hard. I had to turn into one of those people that fights for every point because she was so anal. For example, she is a big fan of fill in the blank lists. One particular test I remember there was a six blank question. I remembered all but one, but she counted the entire six point question wrong. If you do want/have to take this class, its not bad, but be aware that she is a hard grader, pay particular attention to tiny little nuances, and read ALL directions on every assignment.

This was the first anthropoloy class that I have ever taken. Mrs. Applegate was a very nice teacher and tried to make the class as interesting as possible. You will take lots of notes in this class. The test are also difficult but she gives you a study guide so if you do that and study your notes you should be alright,

This class is mostly lecture, with three labs that are kind of fun. Tests can be a bit tricky in the wording of the questions. Extra credit is time spent cleaning artifacts. Final is cumulutive, but the questions are taken straight from the previous tests, so don't throw them away.
Overall, Dr. Applegate is a very nice, knowledgable teacher.

The only time this class is offered is at 8am which is the only reason this course can suck. If you take notes you have everything that will be on her tests. She offers study guides before every exam on her website. She also offers great extra credit through washing artifacts in the Rock House basement. You can do as many hours as are needed to raise your grade.

There are many good things about this class. First, it's interesting (if you're interested in history, archaeology, cultures, etc). Second, it's really NOT that hard. She tells you what needs to be in your notes and gives extensive study guides for the test--so if you have the notes, the study guides aren't a problem. There is a research paper, but I don't think she really grades that hard, because mine had a lot of mistakes and I still got a 100 on it. Also, her attendance policy is like this: if you have 3 or fewer absences, you can do extra credit. If you go work in the anthropology lab and wash artifacts for an hour, you get 5 points for it, and you can get up to 40 points (meaning you could fail an exam and still make an A in the class if you do the e.c.). I would say: interesting class, and you don't have to work THAT hard. Definitely recommend it.

The tests are absolutely NOTHING like the notes in class, I was constantly answering questions in class, everyone in the class thought I was the bomb. When I got 50's on the first two tests, which should have been ridiculously easy had they been anything like what she taught, I dropped the class.

Dr. Applegate amazes me on her knowledge of this course. She is well prepared and knows course material before the class. I think less time should have been spent on the Gould book as well as time spent on genetic basics. Labs were good, but no mention was made about on having a background in statistics. But overall the class was very good and showed areas where I was weak in.
