Additional Comments |
Most people thought Wilder was the greatest teacher in the world when I took her. Frankly she was a nightmare. She told me she would help but said there was no reason I should be frustrated about the language. I was told a lot about the "Deaf Culture." Upon telling her that it seemed like the people wanted their own country she got mad.
She did not see anyone else's point of view. She humiliated anyone who had problems. If you had a penis you did well or were extremely pretty she doted on you. If you were plain and just struggling she lost interest.
She gave out assignments that were often pointless and were involved in even further making one think that biggots were about. 15-30 hours of interaction with the "Deaf Culture" was required. This was often humiliating and required one to forget who they were and loose all their self-esteem.
Needless to say this was a pointless class for me to take and I wish I had not. I lost most respect I have for the "Language." I soon realized why it was not tought. Warning if you are going to take ASL it is not a language spoken out of the U.S. it will be pointless for places like Spain, Italy, Japan, India or anyplace that would require a second language.
