This class was amazing not only because it started late in the day (12:45pm) but Oakes let you do whatever you want when it came to painting. I went to class maybe 55% of the semester and I pulled out with an A. As long as you are caught up and show that your work is progressing you will make an A.

Mr. Oakes was a cool teacher. He really knows what he is talking about and loves his job. He is willing to help you if you have a problem and talks to you about what you are doing and why. His lectures and slides shows are kinda boring and his quiz can be difficult if you don't read the material really well. Good advice: DO THE PORTFOILIO AS YOU GO ALONG! not sleeping for 36 hours is not the way to go...

Mr. Oakes really knows what he is talking about and is a very good teacher. he is very helpful and gives good constructive critisism. the only thing i didn't like about his class was all the text book readings and the quizzes. the quizzes are really hard and are usually over about 30 to 40 pgs. or more. you also have about 3 to 4 sketches due every week which gets really old. even with all the out of class homework i think it is very helpful if you don't have a lot of experience in drawing b/c it is really just a lot of practicing. i was really worried about my grade b/c i didn't have great quiz grades and i was missing a few sketchbook assignments but i think he grades mostly on effort and improvment. overall i think it is a good basic drawing class if you haven't had much experience but you are going to have a lot of out of class work.

Comes off sort of hippy-ish, but he teaches art, so it isn't that surprising. Paying attention isn't difficult. If you fall asleep, its because you didn't get enough sleep the night before. You learn alot, a not all about art. Show up and take decent notes, and you're fine.

Very straight forward--expect most of the notes and paintings you see in class to show up for all of your exams. He'll give emphasis on the material you really need to know--you won't waste time studying for a bunch of other stuff. At times, the videos shown in class can be boring.
