Great teacher, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Never thought astronomy was interesting until I took his course. Tests are all multiple choice but all are cumulative.

I have had Rico for two courses now; SMED 101 and SMED 340. SMED 101 is easy as long as you go to class and show up for your assigned teaches which are at elementary schools. He's very understanding and will do anything to help you as long as he knows you are concerned about your grade.
SMED 340- I did not like this course, but there is no one I would have wanted to take it with other than Rico. Sign up for his courses, he's a good teacher!

A very good class taught by an educator who WANTS you to succeed! It is the introductory class to teaching through a new program (SKYTeach) for Math and Science majors. The tests are you actually teaching a lesson YOU prepare with a partner, and YOU go teach. Grading is done by the teacher who's classroom you use, as well as your "Master Teacher" who bases their grade off how well you managed your time, lesson material, and class. I reccommend Mr. Tyler to ANYONE who truly wants to learn.

Dr. Tyler was a nice person and instructed the class well. He taught in high school for many years so he knows about teaching, but it does seem like he knows more about teaching science classes than just teaching. I agree with comments from the second person.
Most of the people in the class struggled with communication with Dr. Tyler. A lot of people talked about sending e-mails and even calling and received no response from Dr. Tyler. One recommendation to him would be to respond to the students who are concerned about not receiving their grades yet, a question about class, or infomation he asked us to send.
However, he was slightly unorganized, I found that most in the education department are, and he is no more disorganized than the others. However, we did not get any grades back until a week before the semester was over. Some were concerned about grades from the PGP we did early on. These complaints were from good students, not slackers, who only received B's, but had done the work correctly. The problem with this assignment and others was he gave small amount of direction on how to complete assignments and then graded differently than how the rubric on the electronic portfolio told us to complete the assignment.
Besides all this I say he is a good teacher to take this class with. It is not difficult and you might learn how to deal with some management issues in class. But some of the management situations you will discuss are extreme...like a high schooler having a gun in class or drugs. The way you react to the situation does not matter so much as just doing it.
Final advice: Check the electronic portfolio for the assignments to print, he does not always give the assignment to you. Get a good group to work with because you have two projects to do together. Ask about the time his high school students thought he was dead on a field trip. You do not need the book....sorry Harry Wong.

Dr. Tyler is a great teacher. I don't like biology or sience or anything in that area but, Dr.Tyler made this class very interesting and fun. There is plenty of extra credit and make sure that you take advantage of it. If you have an A in his class you don't have to take the final because he'll drow your lowest test grade (meaning he'll drow your final instead). Make sure you attend the class every day, b/c he requires the attendance. Make sure that you litsen and/or take good notes. DON'T buy the book, you woun't need it.

BORING! This class was really long and hard to sit through...If you enjoy anything space-related you might enjoy it. I got a B in the class and I did bad on all but one test. (Bad as in FAIL) He gives a ton of extra credit opportunities...and assignments in class, they count as your labs. As long as you do the work, you can make an A or B in the class. DONT BUY THE BOOK! I didn't use it once..and the bookstore didn't buy it back. Get with a friend in the class and split the cost if you want to be safe. But I wouldn't bother. Anything you need to know he will tell you in class. If you pay attention and don't fall asleep the tests won't be so bad.

Although this class was very easy and quite enjoyable with my fellow classmates I don't think I got as much out of it as I could have. Mr. Tyler is nice and what he says is insightful but I found him to be very unorganized. I don't know if that is the norm (and I don't think it is, it's just that this semester seemed to throw him for a loop) but our class had multiple assessment items this semester and only received two of them back. The first was a test we took on October 15th that we got back in late November a week before finals and the second was a personality bulletin board we had to construct which was our first assignment and we got that grade back fast. By not getting grades back my classmates and I were quite irritated at not being able to measure our progress throughout the semester and if our work was acceptable or not. As a result of that, this class left a poor taste in my mouth.
Aside from that (which is the reason I gave Tyler a yellow face as opposed to a green one) this class isn't too difficult but make sure you have a good group for assignments because you have two major group projects to complete: a discipline plan about a discipline model and a collaboration project where you have to work with students in the community towards an education goal. If you get back partners this could impact up to 200 points of your grade.
You also have to do a peer teach in the class where a discipline problem is confronted. These are fun (as long as your not teaching) and if I were you I'd pick a teacher-parent conference. I did and mine was a lot easier than doing a classroom simulation. You have to write daily reflections over people's peer teaches and it's funny because we started them on October 12th and didn't finish them until the first week of December! If you want to get him off track just ask questions because he has a tendency to ramble.
Overall, I didn't feel as if I grasped as much as I could out of this class. After the first week of October I felt that this class just shut down and it was more of less social time with my classmates and I. While that was fun, it wasn't necessarily educational time well spent. However, Mr. Tyler is nice it's just that he's unorganized which is the problem.

Do not take Rico Tyler. During class he will hand you out a study guide, which isnt really a study guide kind of a vague following. Then he will proceed to lecture, although his lecture will NOT consist of astronomy, it will consist of other things that he talks about for an hour and a half, one day we talked about real estate for over an hour. This class is a waste of time. He doesnt give you very many notes, he does give you study guides for the test, but they are an all day investment. His class is so boring it doesnt really encourage anyone to attend, its not interesting and most people fall asleep. Oh and when he hands out a test he will say his daughter thought it was easy, um no his tests are quite difficult, and the little amount of notes he gives does not help.

He is so boring. If you stay awake in this class you should get an automatic A because its impossible. He teaches by lecture but you can never tell what in his lecture is notes or just a random story. He is a good guy, you can tell. He just is a horrible teacher. He has little to no contact with his students and he only gives 2 tests plus a final. So if you mess up on one, you are screwed. I hated every moment in this class. If you want any easy Ast class, don't take Rico Tyler.

He expects you to take notes over him talking. It is difficult seeing you don't know what the test will be over. If you ask him he will give you a review before he begins talking about the sections so you know what notes to be taking, if you can take another teacher but if you can't then he is ok.

No textbook, but you must purchase a subscription to a text online (9.00 or so). His exams are a bit difficult, just make sure you study all your notes. As for notes, his lectures are boring and hard to follow so actually getting notes down is a challenge. He gave us a final exam study guide, but someone had to ask him to do this for us. Hardly any homework. Make sure you go to class for attendance-- he does knock your grade down (a lot) based on this-- ick.

Finally, an education course that we truly need, taught by someone who truly teaches! Other than a tendency to drift off the subject at length occasionally (his experience and knowledge are quite broad), his classes are informative, orderly, and quite practical. Unlike some SEC 453 classes (where apparently anything but classroom management is taught), his course focuses on managing a class, and provides us hands-on practice. Dr. Tyler brings in some of the masters in this field, combining videos, lectures, and class activities masterfully. This should be made two-term class, replacing one of the flotsam education courses with true nutrition for the teacher's soul.

HE passes around an attendance sheet every once in a while, so you may get counted absent you may not. The text we had was online, and cost us 9.95, so its pretty cheap. He really, really likes astronomy so he gets off the subject...ALOT. YOu really have no idea what is going to be on the test. Its hard to pay attention. But relatively easy.

Mr. Tyler is a diiferent kind of teacher. He is a little silly at times, but he was really good at teaching the material for the class. There was a quiz almost every week, but they were usually easy. There was a lot of math involved, as well as activities (lab was included in the class). He did seem a bit boring at times, but some parts of physics isn't that interesting anyway. I would recommend him to anyone.

At the beginning he makes it seem hard, it's not. As long as you keep up with your work. Doing all of the extra credit is a big help too. His tests are pretty tough, if you have access to past tests like from someone at a sorority house, study them. They are the best guide. I don't think I ever used my book... I would buy it again if I could do it again. You can also drop your lowest test grade. So if by the time of the final you are ok with your grade, you can drop your final (you just don't have to take it).

This class was worse sitting through than five hours of lifetime television with my girlfriend. It's only offered at night and that makes the class about three hours long. He knows the material well, but makes the presentation of it so incredibly boring that you won't be able to stay awake to take notes. He gives random quizzes and 3 multiple choice tests, which are ALL cumulative. Extra credit is available depending upon the weather. Overall, I would probably reccommed anyone but Mr. Tyler for this class.

Mr. Tylers class is extremely boring. I took it in the morning and had trouble staying awake. MAKE SURE if you take him to keep track of your grades. For my final grade I caught at least 4 grading mistakes and it brought me from a low C to a B. His class is fairly easy just don't expect to learn anything or have fun.

This man is a true astronomy nerd. He knows the material, but presentation can be a little dry. He only teaches the class as a night class and offers extra credit after class weather permitting. Problem is that when the weather permitting he has other plans, and when the weather sucks, he says it would have been an extra credit. YOU CAN EASILY SHARE A BOOK FOR THIS CLASS. Most of the notes come directly from him, and the labs are easy. You can miss a class or two, and as long as there is no quiz, he'll never know.
