Do not take this class. I got stuck in it and it was ridiculously hard. He gives you a ton of notes, no homework grades to help your grade, no extra credit. The tests are super hard and you have to teach yourself the material because he goes so fast. Tests are formatted like this: 1. You have the statement with all of your data. Under it he has different questions labelled a,b,c,d,e,f,g...etc. His grading scale is what I really hated. Here is almost what his grading scale was, this is as close to it as I can remember: An "A" is 100 to 95, "B" is 94 to 87, a "C" is 86 to 75...etc. so you have to work your butt off in this class to pass.
Do not take this class. It is awful. I sat next to a girl who was majoring in some kind of statistics major who stopped coming to the class and never showed for the test.

Dr. Neal is a hilarious teacher that cares about education. He works to make the course work interesting and applicable to the real world.
Definitely take him because he doesn't require a calculus textbook. That's like an extra $150 for beer.

THE MATH IS NOT THE HARD PART IT IS THE INSTRUTOR ASSUMING YOU KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT BEFORE HE TEACHES IT. HE DOES ALLOW THE FORMULA SHEET HE PROVIDES FOR TEST BUT HONESTLY DOES NOT HELP MUCH. THERE ARE NO GRADES OTHER THAN THE TEST AND HE IS PROUD THAT HE HAS FAILED AN ENTIRE CLASS BEFORE. ANYTHING BELOW A 70% IS FAILING.

Dr. Neal is very knowledgeable with 20+ years of teaching experience and makes the content understandable. The only complaint I have about the class is that his grading scale follows the natural breaks in grades so there is no set grading scale. It roughly falls to 95%-100% = A, 85%-94% = B, 75%-84% = C, and so on. There is NO TEXTBOOK REQUIRED because all of the material is on his webpage. BE SURE TO DO THE PRACTICE TESTS before each exam since they are the EXACT same but with different values.

This class is pretty difficult. We learned many new things that were challenging. It was very rewarding to learn the new methods and do well on the tests after studing hard. This guy is stuck in the 80's and has a pretty sweet mullet. He's a character no doubt, but it is a good class.

This class was at times a great one, then at others a nightmare. Dr. Neal is a funny guy, but you should know that he can be a little bit of a jerk, but not all the time. He was helpful when you had questions, especially in class, so if you ever were confused on something, he would be happy to explain it. He always wrote everything on the board, which was really helpful, but EVERYTHING is word problems. He doesn't use a textbook, but he does give out worksheets which help out a lot. There were a few homework assignments, but the things that determine your grade (which was on a 95 and above is an A, 94-85 is a B, and 84-74 is a C, below that was an F) were the exams.
He does give study guides for the tests, which are just like the tests themselves, which was my saving grace in the class--TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN AND DO THEM! If you study and keep doing the study guides, you will do fine.
Overall I enjoyed the class, but it was a challenge at times. Just remember to take the time to STUDY for the exams, and you should be golden. Good luck!

This class was fun. All you really had to do was to go to class and pay attention. He gives you test reviews before every test and sometimes notes too. If you don't understand it he will go over until you do.

Dr. Neal was very easy to follow. If you don't understand, he will go over it again until you do. He gives study guides for each test, which are exactly like the test with different numbers. Take this class if you have the chance!

You can tell that Dr. Neal has a passion for teaching. He loves math and is very smart. If you are not very smart he has trouble connecting and teaching you. He doesn't understand that not everyone is as smart as him. He also teaches REALLY fast. DO NOT get behind because it is hard to catch up. Also, there is no book for this course, so if you miss a day, you miss the notes from that chapter, which are essential. Be prepared to study every night for this course. He gives you "example" tests that are basically the same as the actual test. To make an A on the test though, you will have to go over the practice test until you know the information inside and out. There are a lot of formulas you will have to memorize. I would not recommend taking this course if do not have to.

Neal was one of the best teachers I've had. If you take notes and listen in class you will pass. He will actually go above and beyond with his teaching. He will teach you things that you can use later in life and I know that's big for those who hate math! For those who like to go out and party on Thursday Nights I would not recommend this class though. After 6 absences you will fail with no questions asked and he give quizes every Friday. Anyone else though, take him!! He's REALLY good!

Dr. Neal, is a good person, but likes word problems to much. I feel like i wasnt being taught algebra, but i was in a basic/intro Physic's class. He talked more about gravity, velocity, and weight functions more than we talk about algebra.
The class is OK, no book is needed, because Dr neal gives you packets each week, that go over how to do certain problems, and also gives you answers to those problems and shows how to solve them. There is no Homework to turn in, not even the problems you can chose to work on the packets (they are just for your own practice purposes).
There are a handful of quizzes just about every friday, which are pretty easy, and helpful since some of them offer extra credit.
There are 4 test, all of which contain word problems (they suck!!) If you dont understand the material on the test fully, dont expect to 'wing' it.
Attendence is a MUST, just because its a basic math class, and attendence is a must in all of them. You can miss up to 3 (i think) and thats the most, without dropping a full letter grade.
Overall: I would take this class...
1) if you had no other choice
2) like words problems
or..
3) like recieving bad grades because in some weird way, you like D's and F's. :)

Dr. Neal is great! He is so funny, you never know what the man will say. He usually gives you the notes in handouts, and always prepares practice tests and quizzes. You will have a quiz EVERY friday, and attendance is mandatory. His tests are easy. He will give you the questions the class before you take it, all he does is change the numbers. It's in the same order and evreything! I love Dr. Neal's class, I am going to take him for Statistics!

David Neal was one of the best professors that I have had at Western and one of the best Math teachers I have ever had. He explains everything very thorough and lets the class know exactly what will be on the quizes and tests. He also uses examples to apply math to the real world. He has helped me decide to make math my minor.

Dr. Neal is by far the best choice for this or any math class. He is funny, helpful, and has no accent - pretty good qualities for a math professor. I am not a math person and this was my favorite class. There is no textbook to buy - he types up all of his own notes and example problems and hands them out to the class. Attendance isn't required, but he takes attendance on random days and is more likely to round your grade up if you are borderline at the end of the semester and have been there and have been making an effort. All in all, I would reccommend Dr. Neal because he is amazing!

I have always thought that Math was my worst subject, and I was worried about taking my first college math class. Dr. Neal is a very good teacher who helps you out any way that he can. If you are getting behind, he will definitely stop and try to catch you up. I got an A in this course, and that is the first A that I have received in a Math class since Algebra I in 9th grade! I recommend Dr. Neal to anyone looking for a Math 109 teacher.

If you are like me and do not like math, then you will want to take this course. Dr. Neal is one of the few professors that make math fun. He has a great sense of humor, and really makes the class enjoyable. As long as you show up for class, and do the problems he does in class, then you will do a good job. I reccomend Dr. Neal if you need Math 109!

I really liked Neal. You know how in some classes you ask yourself, "when will i ever need to use this information?" well he takes what he teaches you and applies things to real life. i, for one, think he is a good teacher, and far from a devil worshiper. maybe a little bit of a hippy but he has a sense of humor and will give extra credit when need be. his test arent hard at all, they're short and to the point. he gives you plenty of packets to look over and to work the problems out on, and if you need help, he's always willing.
