I loved this class. I was nervous about taking this class because I normally am not good at giving speeches. I made A's on all of my speeches. The group speech was harder than the Individual speeches. If you put effort into the class and listen to what she says you'll make an A.

Mrs. Deller is a very sweet lady. I would not recommend her as a teacher though. This should be an easy course but I think she makes it way too complicated. She gives you a lot of busy work that is not needed. If you can, look for another teacher!

DO NOT TAKE MARGE DELLER! In all my years of going to school, Mrs. Deller is easily the worst teacher I have ever encountered. Her class is not hard but she will make sure you don't get the grade you deserve. She will deduct points for no reason. She is not understanding at all! She has an attendance policy for students yet she missed at least 3 days of class including the day of the final! She threatened to give my group an F because one member would not be there to present because he had to go out of town for a funeral. She is awful and i hope she gets fired before she croaks over which will be soon because she is probably 93 years old. I am a smart student and attended class daily even though it made me want to shoot myself it was so boring. Not to mention she is awful at speaking to the class, horrible at communicating with the class, and for the most part has no idea what she is talking about. How ironic. I did all my work and made a B on the final exam and the first two presentations and a C on the other test and presention yet still got a C in the class. I tried to talk to her about my grade and she would not listen or reply to work something out. and on all the days she missed class she had a substitute teacher come and attendance was required. She is awful so please do not torture yourself.

Do not take this teacher. She is terrible and cant talk worth crap. The class does a lot of bullshit work. I though I would get an A until we got back our group presentation, we she grades ridicously hard on. Dont take her....she's boring and never shuts up and lets you work on stuff in class. All of my friends took different teachers and talks about how easy it was. So do yourself a favor, find someone else!

Mrs. Deller is insane. This is a 100 level communitcation class, and she requires so much of you. I never made an A on one of her test. She would quote the text book to the extreme and the only way you could make an A on a test would be to memorize over three chapters. She is not a really hard grader when it comes to actually giving speeches, but all the written work that she requires you to turn in is graded pretty hard. She requires you to read a bunch of chapeters in the book and do little written work activities...she is insane. If you take Deller after reading this, you will regret it!

I received a 89.4 in her class and participated every day and she would refused to move me up to an A. She is horrible take another professor if you can help it.

I took this class with the idea that I would do well. Ive always done well in Business and/or Speaking courses. But this teacher is by far the worst I've ever had. Not only did she not make sense she talked about nothing or sometimes the same thing for almost 20 minutes straight. She even graded me unfairly in comparrison to the other class members. If you have to take this class do not get her as a teacher or you will be so sorry you did.

Ms. Deller is by no means a push-over, and will really shock you with her Exams (be forewarned!). These Exams are long and tough, often times asking questions that have no correct answer, just the one she decides on (they're opinion based, or the book says two of the choices are correct). I got a 74, 82, and 85 on the two exams and final (And I'm a 4.0 student). The place you can make up points (or lose ALOT, if you do poorly), is in the presentations. You have to do two personal presentations, and one group presentation, and what she looks for is NOT speaking ability, but that you include all the little things that the outline requires, and that it is formatted properly. I got a 98, 99, and 94 on these, so that pushed me into a low A, since I got 100 on the little assignments, though this was no easy A, by any means. Anyone who criticizes her for being older is short-sighted and rude, she's a great professor, but a pretty hard one for a 100-level class. I recommend her to anyone who wants to learn something, or is a COMM major!

Ms. Deller is a horrible teacher. Although I received an A, few people in my class did and I had to work my butt of to get it. (I've also been doing speeches my whole life.) She repeats herself with everything she says, her lectures cover little of the information on the tests, she grades speeches VERY tough, and she always asks if you disagree with grades and if you do all she wants to do is argue. Many of my friends had this class at the same time I did and I feel there are many other better COMM 161 teachers.

Ms. Deller is a very nice lady, just not a good teacher. Everything is run through blackboard, so if you don't know how to use it, learn. The tests are pretty easy, but the speeches are a little more difficult. There's quite a bit of role play while your speaking, and she does expect you to be VERY profesional. The class is SO boring, I dreaded it, not to mention I had it at 8 am. She repeats, and repeats. And teaches useless information, I haven't learned anything yet, except to warn everyone else to look elsewhere.

She is the most BORING teacher that I have ever had in my entire life. She goes on and on for half of the class period about nothing she loses you when she first begins to talk and from then on you are in outer space just looking at her like she is an alien because you don't know what she is talking about. She is very hard to understand and she in not an understanding person at all. I would not reccomend her to anyone even if she was the last person on earth. She grades really hard on speeches especially the very first one. If you have to take a speech class DO NOT take it with her, if she is the last teacher that has an open spot in her class wait until the next semester, because she is not worth the stress that she will cause on you.

MS. DELLER IS A REALLY NICE LADY BUT SHE'S KIND OF CONFUSED ABOUT THIS COURSE. TEST ARE STRAIGHT FORWARD RIGHT FROM THE TEXT. MULTIPLE CHOICE AND T/F. ONLY 3 SPEECHES. 2 INDIVIDUAL AND 1 GROUP. VERY NICE LADY AND VERY WILLING TO HELP.

If you are reading this then quickly change your class because you do not want to be stuck in here. It is a 100 level class with the difficulty of a 300 level class, do not take this class with this instructor.

Where should I begin? I should have known this was the wrong class to be taking when the teacher walked in and she was the same age as my grandmother! Don't get me wrong she was a very nice lady but she is set in her ways and she is unwilling to budge on anything. She thinks everyone should give speeches like a professional, I mean really, this is only a 100 level course! The only reason why I went to class was to talk to all of the cuties that sat behind me. But seriously, the little hmwk there is is simple; the tests are moderate if you study; and the speeches must be perfect- be prepared to spend 7-8 hrs per speech if you want an A or B on it.

Four presentations are required. It is crucial to go over your speech and note cards because she counts off points for small things. Tests are easy. I didn't read the book at all and made a B on both.

You have to take a midterm and a final in this class. The midterm is cumulative of the first eight chapters and the final is cumulative of the last eight. You also do an interview/interviewee scenario, a group discussion, an informative speech, and a persuasive speech. She isn't too tough of a grader, but you can get major points knocked off if you don't follow the procedure she gives you before each performance. Also, there is a lot of reading required out of the book and simple homework assignments. Honestly, it's not THAT important that you read right when it's assigned, but you will need to know it as the final and the midterm come directly out of the book readings.

Four "performances" :
1) job interview
2) group discussion
3) informative speech
4) persuasive speech w/ powerpoint
Tests aren't too difficult (I only scanned the reading material).
