Let me point out a few things about Dr. Benton. His class is among the easiest courses I have taken at Western.
And, you're probably thinking how was it easy with a mountain of projector slides and no extra credit?!
Here's my STRAT to get an "A", while bypassing the mountain of notes the rest of the class took.
1. Make sure to go to class and pick up Benton's "Review Sheet" given out 1-2 classes before each exam. This review covers everything you will need to know, and is usually no longer than 3 pages of notes.
2. Second, if you decide to keep going to class, don't feel obligated to take notes. Just try to soak up the information and actually listen to his lecture. Trust me, when you get the review sheet...he will quickly go over all the terms so you can jot them down real fast.
3. Third, his questions are oversimplified and if you think too hard, you might get questions wrong.
good luck everyone

Yes, this was an easy class. However, I did learn a substantial amount. On our second test, the class average was a 90. If you don't want to take it just because its easy, at least take it because Benton is awesome.

Gary is the man. He's a funny, laid-back guy who really knows his stuff. He's worked at alot of different companies and shares his valuable experiences. His notes are straightforward and if you study for the tests youll do good. He only allows two absences before he takes points off. But go to class because you want the notes he writes on the overhead. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone

Professor Benton is cool.. it's an introductory MKT course, so there's only so interesting he can make it, but he makes it as easy as he possibly can. if you study, you'll do great. there's ALOT of notes, but you can deal with it. if you take another course, chances are it'll b more difficult than this one. I study about 2-3 hours for each exam, and get A's on em'. take Benton; you'll b happy

Basically all you ever do is take notes, notes and more notes. But you get out like 15 to 20 minutes every day. There is no homework or quizzes just tests. 4 of them. They are a little difficult. You MUST study thoroughly. However, at the end of the semester he grades on a curve, and will bring everyone's grade up accordingly. Not the most exciting class, but it didn't tie up my time with homework or extra work.

This is an easy class. The exam comes directly from your notes. It was boring but it was an easy A.............with NO TEXTBOOK! Mr. Benton also provides a study guide to help with each exam.

I think a few people said this class was hard or the note-taking was overkill. They are clearly incompetent. You do come in and take notes from beginning to end, but he usually lets you out early and the tests are straight from the notes anyway. This is a perfect class for an A as long as you come to class, take notes and study.

The amount of notes are horrendous. If you just buy the book, you have the notes. But make sure you go to class because attendence is required. And make sure you do not do anything that will get you noticed. He likes to pick out people and insult them in from of class. Study everything. Don't leave anything out. His test are the same format but the question sometimes can trick you if you do not know the true definition of the principle. It is hard as H*ll to get an "A" in the Class, but easy to get an "B". Try hard.

Mr. Benton does a good job of explaining things; he has a lot of experience in the retail industry and it helps a lot. He gives A LOT of notes; he will usually go over a whole chapter in one day, so if you miss class, you've missed a lot of material. He has a review session before each test, but he pretty much tells you to study everything he covered. You will have to spend plenty of time memorizing lists and definitions in order to do well in his class.

The whole class hour is dedicated to powerpoints and notetaking. Book isn't needed unless you miss the notes from class. His review handout goes over all the main points again, so you can play catch-up on the notes yourself.
Need to study for the test if you want an 'A'

This general marketing class is pretty easy material but Benton makes it seem even easier. Generally the class consists of notes from powerpoint everyday and there will be a test every 2 or 3 weeks. He gives you a detailed study guide as to what will be on the test. If you study the tests are not that difficult. From what I hear from other students, I'm glad that I had Gary. I would recommend him to anyone!

Mr. Benton is a great teacher who really wants everyone to succeed in his course. However, attendance is required and in reality you really need to go to get the insane amount of notes that he gives. The tests come straight from the notes and a few hours of study should give you an A. The project at the end of the semester is a load but as long as you start early, you will be fine.

Dr. Benton is the best when it comes to Marketing. I would have gotten an A, but my group's marketing plan wasn't put together well. Make sure you come to class because he gives extra credit if you miss 1 or less classes. He has a sign-in sheet everyday. But if he forgets it (which is rare) he gives everyone perfect attendance for that day. Make sure you take good notes, because that is where the test comes from. I didn't miss a day of class and the first test I got the highest grade in all of his classes which was a 98. He has extra credit on each test. Just go to class, take good notes, and do a good job on both the tests and market plan, you'll be fine.

Mr. Benton is a wonderful professor who cares about his students. He gives a lot of notes from the overhead which can get rather boring, but his tests come directly from those overheads and he gives an indepth study guide before each exam. There is a project in this course, but it is rather easy if you just follow his instructions. I would definitely recommend him.

I really enjoyed this class. Mr. Benton is a great professor and the class wasn't all that hard. If you just come to class and study your notes really well you will do good on the tests. You really do not need the book...I never used it...so save yourself the money. Of course there is a big group project to do like every other marketing class but if you just get a good group it isn't bad at all.

Go to class prepared to take notes. All you do in copy down slides the whole class period. However, you need these notes for the test and this way you don't have to buy the book. Study for the tests bc they can be difficult. He will curve the tests a little bit and pick your group wisely for the project!!

I felt we went through material really quick. It was almost as if a one year class was crammed into one semester. The whole class is notes. The project isn't bad if you have a decent group. I would suggest taking a different professor for this class. This class was a lot more difficult than it should have been. Study for the tests... just read your notes and memorize everything. I am an awful test taker and it almost cost me a D in the class.

You have to do a group project that is very time consuming and really hard. Luckily I got an A on the project, which got me my "B" in the class. He gives a good idea of what are on the tests, it's straight from the notes and the book. But there is SO much information to know for the tests, you really have to know your stuff. Other than that, he's a cool teacher and nice. I would recommend him, but YOU MUST study and UNDERSTAND your notes as well as read your book.

There is not much to say about this professor. He lectures straight off the projector slides, which are straight from the book. His tests are very hard, but you wouldn't expect it from the notes. The project pulls all the concepts together so I understood the material. He is overall effective, and I learned the basic concepts of marketing.

Benton is sarcastic and VERY rude. Do not be late or leave early from class..he hates that. Makes class very simple in class but exams are SO SO difficult! Covers material learned in class but in a different manner..lots of application and TERRIBLE fill in the blanks where you must regurgitate steps and lists. Was very jealous of friends who had other marketing teachers who were much easier. TAKE A DIFFERENT TEACHER!

If you like to take notes, here is a class for you. Everything we has is on overheads. Your hand with be in shape at the end of this course. He also assigns a huge project, my advice: start early and work hard. He is very critical of these projects. Choose a product to market that is already out on the market, you will have an easier time completing your project. Good Luck!

This class is not difficult, but the man CANNOT teach. It is great that he has had a background in Marketing, but he REALLY needs to work on his technique. The review is not helpful at all. He should just walk in and say "read all of your notes." He is a nice enough guy, but it is apparent that he does NOT have an education background.

There are a lot of notes to take, but it's over easy material. All the notes you take are from overhead slides. If the slide has a lot of information, he'll give you a handout. You get points for attendance so if you want an easy 30 points, show up. He knows what he is talking about and has a lot of examples about Payless, Target, and Aerosoles because he worked there so you'll get tired of hearing that. There is a project at the end of the class worth 204 points. You have to come up with your own retail store. It basically follows the book. He lets you know what he wants in it, so it's relatively easy. Just be sure to start early on it cause it takes a while. Benton is one of the best professors in the College of Business and he doesn't even have a Doctorate!

His test aren't bad but you do have study your notes. You will also have a marketing project to do, its big but you have lots of time. I highly recommend you that Benton.
