He tries to make you feel like you dont know any thing. I hated his class. DO NOT TAKE him unless you already know alot about chemistry. He has his favorites and he is not afraid to show it. His tests are straight memory. Although he lets you retake the first two tests, his class is horrible.

Dr. Byrd is a nice caring man but I would not recommend for anyone to take him for Chem 109. Way too much information and he expects you to memorize EVERY LITTLE DETAIL for everything! In my opinion grading isn't exactly fair because he seems to want you to put what he himself woud put as an answer and if you're a little off you get huge points deducted. The material is crazy, he doesn't explain hardly at all, he rambles on about random things and gets off subject easily. I sit in class listening to him wondering what he is talking about because he is just so confusing! He also says the book is wrong it is never right so he makes his own HUGE packets for you to memorize! Every Test is HARD, it is not possible to study too much for these. He also gives tons of quizzes, some take home. Everything is fill in the blank, essay, and problem solving. You must be able to explain everything you do in great detail! If I could, I would go back and take it with someone else but I don't have the time. And I'm not the only one who feels this way, I've talked to plenty others who've had him and that are in my class and they ALL agree.

Professor Byrd is one of a kind. He's very unusual but keeps things interesting. He hands out packets of notes for you and usually gives out a study guide before each test. You can make this class hard if you don't study. The tests are usually a lot like the study guide but sometimes he switches things up to throw you off guard.

About as boring as watching paint dry. Monotonous voice and forces you to show your work...Completely ridiculous when your high school taught you to do scientific notation in your head. He is completely void to listen to your reasoning and how your high school taught you. Basically, I think this guy is complete crap. He needs to open up to rational thought and diversity and let the students work how they were taught in high school.
I'm glad our class got a new teacher, because she is as nice and friendly as any college teacher should be.

When I first enrolled in this class, I was overwhelmed by the quantity of notes there were and the word-for-word homeworks/quizzes he would assign. But often he would make a test seem harder than it actually was. He would build things up and I would often study more than necessary (which was good!). He can be pretty picky, but he does give some extra credit for most tests, and homework is pretty easy to get points for. I learned a lot and really enjoyed this class! If you're pre-med, pre-whatever, even nutrition, you will probably enjoy what this man has to say!

Let me start by saying I had this class at the top of the hill from 8:00-10:10 twice a week. Since I'm not a morning person, I fought sleep almost every day in there. He said we were going to have a quiz almost every class meeting, and then he just wouldn't mention it again. His lectures wonder off on crazy tangents that are irrelevant and then he throws questions about them on the test. Attendance is very important. He offered up to 10 points extra credit for the first two tests and none on the last two. Sometimes he let class out early, which was nice. If I had a choice, I probably wouldn't take him again. It wasn't awful but he is picky about everything being worded his way even if your way makes more sense. The tests were a little difficult because they were only fill-in the blank and short answer and he wanted your answers in his terms. I got an A but the class annoyed me and bored to death.

Prof Byrd makes biochemistry fun. He illustrates his lectures with examples and experiences--punctuated with quaint turns of phrase--that make them a delight to hear. He goes over most material a couple of times, so if you feel lost at first just hang in there. He is more than happy to help anyone who is struggling. I never would have expected to say this, but because of Prof Byrd I'm looking forward to taking more biochem classes.

I think Dr. Byrd was a really good professor, especially in the summer. I took this class in the summer and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I do not like chemistry and I'm not very good at it, but I learned a lot in his class. Yes, he does give out a lot of notes and the tests are long and your hand cramps up but the class was not difficult as long as you keep up. If you don't keep up and study then yes, you are going to do poorly. A lot of the homework and quizzes had questions that repeated themselves and most of the questions on the homework and quizzes were on the tests, so it made it a lot easier. Overall, this class is not hard as long as YOU make the effort to do study. I admit that it's pretty tough for a one hundred level course but it's really not bad. If you need this class I would highly recommend taking it in the summer!

This class shouldn't be difficult but it is. Very little of the test is taken from the book most of it is taken from handouts he gives in class. They are hard to read because he underlines and changes the size of font and boldens words at weird points and repeats the same useless information five times so it's hard to find the actual useful information. He downs freshman and thinks that his is the superior chemistry class. His lectures alone make you want to rip your hair out because nothing is thoroughly explained without him getting off topic on some random details that mean nothing. The tests are 9+ pages of fill in the blanks and essays and if you put 6 and he wanted you to write half a dozen he'll mark it wrong. His questions are worded awkwardly and hard to understand. I wouldn't take this class again in fact I would run away if I had known. Now I'm debating whether I should withdraw or if I can manage to word things the way he wants. His extra credit is available but most assignments are a lot of work and few receive full credit because not all the steps were shown although the answer is completely right.

Byrd is a great guy! I love the way he talks, he cracks himself up! He repeats himself a lot so if you don't understand the first time you will pick it up the next couple of times he covers the material. There isn't a lot of note taking you can highlight what he covers in your book or he'll give you handouts. When he gives you a study guide for a test fill it out because it is almost identical to the test! Pretty easy class and a really nice guy with great stories!

Mr. Byrd is CRAZY about chemistry. His class is pretty difficult and requires quite a bit of studying. He gives you study guides and they're a BIG portion of the test. But if you do decent on your test & DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT he gives (easy extra credit), you can easily get an 'A' in the class. Class is mandatory, I would recommend you not miss a class if it at all possible. And if you need help, hes OVERLY GRACIOUS to help and make sure you understand material. He's probably one of the nicest teachers I've ever had & I would recommend him to anyone.

He is an ok teacher and really it wasn't that hard, but he is crazy! Like no lie, I wouldn't recommend him if you can take Kimbler!! On his test he normally gives you a "study guide" which is the test, but you have to answer the questions in EXACLTY his words or he will count off. There is no multiple choice and it is pretty much definitions which you better know word for word! He does give extra credit closer to the end, but you either do great or fail becuase you have to write exaclty like he wants you to!!!! Also his lectures are very boring because he sits in his chair and talks, and normally gets off subject.

Mr. Byrd is a GREAT professor! He knows his subject well and is very good teaching it. He will definately keep you entertained! He gives you study guides for the tests and if you fill those out and study them, as well as the information in the book he tells you to know, then you will do good in the class. He gives you extra credit opportunities just for showing up to class on 2 different days, so make sure you are at every class. These extra credit points are added to your *final* grade! I came out very well in the class and made a 95 on the final, so the class isnt hard at all as long as you study!

Oh yeah and if you don't miss a class like right before fall break when everyone else skips then he will add two points to your final and yes I do mean final grade he will bring you from an 88 to a 90. but be sure you are studying your notes because each tests builds off what you learned for the last test.

Mr. Byrd is a really nice and funny man, but does treat this course like a higher level class. He expects you to know TONS of info for the tests which are basically straight memorization from his notes (which he prints out for you if you pay the $8 . . ) He is very helpful and will help you bring your grade up and is known to sometimes give everyone 100s on a few quizzes just as a "present." . . . As long as you study his notes, you should do fine in this class.

This class is not really that difficult, but it's very frustrating. Mr. Byrd is a very strict grader; if you put dots instead of dashes, he'll count off. I don't know how I ended up with an A in the class because all semester long he would write on my assignments and tests that I would fail or that I would get a C in the class. After the first test, he spent half of our class time calling people to his office to tell them that he didn't think they would pass the class. He's funny sometimes, and other times he's annoying. I don't think he looked me in the eye once while I was talking to him in the entire semester. There really aren't that many notes you have to take, but he does give you a lot of handouts that you have to memorize, and he really mixes up the test formats. All of them, though, have short answer/fill in the blank. Just study, you'll be ok.

This class is definitely the most challenging one I have ever taken. Mr. Byrd gives out a ton of handouts that must be MEMORIZED (verbatim) for the exams. However, this does keep you from having to take an extreme amount of notes in class. If you have this class, I would strongly recommend going to class every time it meets. You will be lost if you miss a class. And, if your grade is borderline at the end of the semester, Mr. Byrd will reward your attendance by possibly bumping the grade up to the next letter. So, again, attendance is important. Study hard for the exams. They are all fill in the blank, short answer, or essay type questions. So, you cannot depend on just "recognizing" answers as with multiple choice tests. This is definitely a difficult class, but I will say that I truly feel Mr. Byrd wants his students to succeed and is helpful inside and outside of the classroom if you have questions. But, DO NOT expect this to be an "easy A"!!!!

He gives most/all of the notes to you in handouts, so there's not a lot of writing. The book is used maybe twice the whole semester, so don't bother with any of the readings. All I can say is study! He wants the class to succeed and makes extra credit available if there is a need for it. His exams are very detail-oriented and he likes long, specific definitions and lots of examples.
