Dr. Shen is a really nice professor, but her lack of notes and hard to understand english make this course very difficult if you have never been around a programming language at all.
She does however go out of her way to help and will push you very hard to succeed. If your a computer science major I strongly recommend taking her, if your not stay far away because you will most likely not pass.

Dr. Chun is not a difficult professor, but she is difficult to understand. I came into the class with a good amount of previous programming experience which made the class a joke. It seemed like a lot of other people were having issues with certain things. I did the first two extra credit assignments; I think they were 50 points each, which padded my grade for the programs I wasn't entirely sure how to do on the tests. She's a nice lady though, and as long as you're actually paying attention and know how to use what you learn it's not very difficult; but, if you're trying something beyond the scope of the class and try to talk to her about it during her office hours she'll probably just tell you to google it.

I took this course online and it was simple. For the test all you have to do is memorize your quizzes that you take and all the questions are on the tests. You also have to take labtest from myitlab.com which are a no brainer. Basically if you want an easy A, I would suggest to take this course.

I did the online course and highly recommend it. She was quick to answer any questions but, some of her directions were not understandable. You do NOT need the book. I tried the first three chapters using it and it took forever. Just go through the quiz, get the answers and do it again for 100% on each. Study the quizzes for the tests. They are question for question exactly the same. Labs were also easy.
The only negative: The course work and the lab work did not seem to have anything in common.????

Chun Shen is an awesome professor. She is very laid back and understanding. At the beginning of the semester, I attended her class regularly. But by the end of the semester, hardly anyone was going... so she canceled all classes since our work was online at Course Compass anyways. All homework in online multiple choice, and you can do it as many times as you want, which means you can always get 100%. The tests are online as well, but you can only take them once. I recommend Chun Shen, it's an easy A!

I took this class during Winter Term 2008. Here are the things I wish I had known before taking this class:
Bad Stuff First:
1.) The book cost $92, You can not return it, and I only used it once.
2.) You HAVE to take the Final Exam in the DELO testing center in Garrett. The exam is password protected and you will NOT be able to take it on your home computer.
Now, with that aside, the class overall was not that bad. The work you did online was exactly (question for question) what was on the test. The Quizes will get you. There were 7 quizes, each ranging from 25-45 questions and there were at least 100 of them on the final exam. That is really all you will have to study. The interactive part is a cake walk. I would recommend that you take it as a Winter/Summer class if you don't mind making a track up the hill to take the final in the testing center.

There are weekly labs to be done out of class. You can either go to a lab to do this, or order the software ($25) and put it on your own computer.
Four quizzes (open book, open notes, can be done out of class on blackboard), one mid-term, one final. All are done MC, T/F on blackboard.
No need to come to class. You won't be able to understand her anyway.

This class is actually considered a web class. You only go to class for the tests or if you need help. You have to buy the book, even though you don't use it, because it has the cds you will use with it. This class was easy if you did your work before going to class to take the tests. The midterm and final is multiple choice. You have quizzes you have to complete pretty much every week but you get a grade for doing them and not for how many you get right. These quizzes are then exactly what is used for the midterm and final so if you study them before those two tests then you'll make an A. Then you have something like 4 other labtests that you must complete. The labtests come from the information on the cds that you complete. These aren't multiple choice and if you don't do the work, you will do bad.

This is the class to take. The class only meets six times throughtout the whole semester and those times are for tests. Everything else is online. The teacher is hard to understand, but as long as you can read, you won't have a problem.

Dr. Chen is very hard to understand during lecture making it difficult to take notes in class. However she lets students print the powerpoint slide presentation that she follows, so that be used as notes. In class she doesn't help too much becuase she has a T.A. there to help. Her tests are easy. She gives four quizes, which can be taken multiple times until you have a perfect score, and the quizes can be printed. The questions for the tests come directly from the quizes.

DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!!! I never opened mine. Ms. Shen is soooooo easy. Ok, so she's difficult to understand. All you have to do is go to class, and you get points for being there. You don't actually have to do anything unless you're in the lab. The model tests aren't taken for a grade, but you can take it, get the answers at the end and retake it to get 100 on it. The midterm and the final are the model tests-exactly. IT's so easy, just print out the questions/answers and learn them. There are lab tests that you take during labs on Fridays, and you can take them as many times as you want to get the grade that you want. TAKE THIS CLASS, it's sooooo easy

This class has easy aspects and difficult aspects. She's very nice and lenient and lets the class spend the majority of the time in the computer labs. All assignments (except for a final report) are online, and so are the tests. She doesn't require perfect attendance. The bad side is that she is very difficult to understand because of her Chinese accent. She lets you learn alot on your own, so if you have to be carried through things then you won't do well. She's willing to help with anything, but you have to have pretty good knowledge of computers to do really well. Most of the quizzes and tests are for practice only and you can take them many times to get the grade you want. The midterm and final are the only important tests, which are moderately easy as long as you read the powerpoints and the chapters in the book.

Mrs. Shen is a very sweet lady and a very smart one too. She has a strong accent and you can't understand her sometimes and it's really funny when she gets tickled at herself and no one knows what she laughing about b/c we can't understand her. All the class information is on blackboard and she offers a lot of hands-on experience in the computer lab. I really enjoyed this class, and if you are into computers, you will ace this class.

I really enjoyed this course. Ms. Shen is a very good teacher. She allows her students many opportunities to make good grades. Those that do not do well in her class are those who did not try. I feel more confident about my computer skills after taking this class and I would recommend Ms. Shen for any other computer classes. She is an effective teacher.

This is one of the worst teachers that I have had since I have been enrolled at Western Kentucky University. As a non traditional student this experience was very upsetting! People that cannot speak English well at all should not be teaching classes at Western at all. I suggest if you take a foreign teacher, make sure it is a foreign language! This person cannot and should not teach any courses of any kind as far as I am concerned. She is rude to students, not helpful to you at all! And for gods sake do not ask her a question, she will probably bite your head off. I do not recommend this class to take from her at all, or any other classes that this woman teaches.

THis is the worst class I have ever taken. Chun Shen is also the worst professor I have ever had. The first day she told us that she hated teaching computers, that she would rather teach chinese. She is very hard to understand, and she doesn't understand you if you can understand her. I asked her a question at lab and she didn't know the answer herself, she actually tried four different questions and got them wrong! And she's the teacher!!! She gives bonus points but she said, "just lucky" when I ask her how you could get bonus points. She takes a point off if you miss class, but you don't need to be there are the first two days, nothing but talking that you can't understand, and the notes won't do you any good anyway. DOn't worry about buying the book, you WILL NOT need it, even though she said that you would. THis class is easy but your grade is a big surprise, because no one is certain how she determines your final grade in the class. I don't even think she knows. Don't take this class....THE WORST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE WKU EXPERIENCE. WHY DOES WESTERN HIRE TEACHERS WHO CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH?! Ok, I hope I got the message across that you will regret it if you take this teacher. Even if you know Qbasic and how to program computers... you won't understand this class. She talks to herself in broken english and sometimes sputters out chinese words... then she will turn to the class and ask if we are following along (of course, we are sitting there in a vegetable state wondering what the &*@#&*)(@ she is writing on the chalkboard)! She may know her subject -- BUT she can NOT teach... in the USA at least. I ended up walking out during the class break because if I stayed I would have lost my mind. If you have had this teacher, please complain to the CS Department Head as to why they hired her? This department has many teachers who they hire straight off the boat from China-- we are paying tuition for people we can't understand... that is sad... From now on, I will only register for non-foreign teachers names. I know that sounds bad, but I'm not wasting any more money on idiot teachers who don't bother to learn English.

This class is super easy if you already know computers like the back of your hand. If not, then don't take Chun Shen. You can't understand a word out of her mouth! Her extra credit is confusing, she makes you guess at what the extra credit is. She is willing to help you but she doesn't understand what you may be asking her. She would go over the same things over and over, i.e., her grading system which never made sense. Unless you are a computer genius and can do all of the programs w/o any questions don't take her!!!

Chun Shen is definently one of the nicest teachers i've had, but with being chinese she is really hard to understand. the actual lecture on mon. and wed. is pretty pointless to attend.Well if you want to catch up on sleep it's good to attend (i know i did). But the lab on fri. is all that matters, but i do reccomend taking her. the website that goes along with the class helps a LOT

Here's the deal, she is impossible to understand, BUT she is very friendly and helpful. You can get bonus points for simply coming to class and asking a question. E-mail her, and you get bonus points. Attendance is NOT mandatory, I usually missed Monday and Wednesday; however, it is important to go to class on friday, which is lab day. If you miss these days, they are hard to make up. Basically, e-mail her, talk to her, ask questions, visit her during her office hours, and you will get bonus points. If you have an A in the class then you do not have to take the final.

I have to say right off that there is a lack of communication. It isn't anybodys fault but I usually didn't understand her and there were plenty of times that a student would ask a question and she would not understand them. I think you might do better with the book, but I only used it a few times. Believe it or not, you actually have to study for her tests a little bit, but they are pretty easy. I only went to class about 20% of the time, usually only once a week, sometimes not even that often. I got an A in there luckily....As for note taking...I can't help you there. The days we took notes I would not show up or else I would just fall asleep. I wouldn't really recommend her.
