I did not enjoy this course. Crouther may seem like a decent teacher in the classroom, but when she is grading she tends to be inconsistent. On the first test I got a 97 and she read the essay to the class. On the second test I got an 80 and wrote on the essay (that was nearly the same by the way), "What happened?" I was very lucky to pull out an A in this class. I do not recommend it.

Dr. Crouther is a wonderful woman. She knows what she is talking about too. I feel that she over-explains everything, and is a pretty tough grader, but she is great. She gives you a syllabus with all the due dates, and she sticks to them. Also, she asks you to bring in rough drafts so that you have at least 2 class periods to talk to her and classmates about improving your paper. She isn't picky, and she's pretty fair.

This class is easy as far as how much and how hard the homework is, but the downside is that she grades VERY HARSHLY no one in my class ever recieved an A on anything. Your suppose to read for class....i never did and i was fine. All you do for tests are write essay that are one page. The final is an essay in your blue book about a poem.

This is a VERY difficult and demanding class when it comes to grades. I took AP Language in high school and thought I would be more than prepared for this class. I honestly have no idea how I ended up with an A. Her grading is very unpredictable, and tough! You write 7-8 essays and that's your grade in addition to the final. The class itself is not difficult, but if your like me and have to have an A, this class and her grading will push you over the edge. If you are looking for an easy A, and an easy Eng 100 class, look somewhere else. It will save you a lot of time and headache.

Professor Crouther has an annoying case of OCD. The work is easy, about one 2 page essay a week, but do not expect to get a 100. Ever. She lets you bring in a rough draft so she can review it and help you correct any mistakes. After you fix those mistakes and turn in the paper, feeling really confident about yourself, she knocks you down and finds something wrong with every other sentence. This was the case with everyone in the class. She does not use Blackboard and only emailed us once. The reason I received a C was because I missed 6 classes and she drops a letter grade. She requires you to come to class on days when you only read the novel she assigns. This was an easy class, just frustrating to deal with because of the pointless classes and her obsessive issues.

The class in general is not hard.. but this woman makes your life hard. Even the simple task of asking about your grade will get you a cold and harsh response suggesting that you are anything less than intelligent. She is demeaning and cruel. She makes easy tasks such as writing a paper into some sort of torture... If it's not done her way then don't expect to get a good grade.

This is a class based on writing about literature. All of the grades are based on writing skills (this part is unavoidable with any professor). I am a good writer.. i took english 100 and had to write 5 papers 2 of which were 6 pages or longer and never scored below a 93 on a single paper. Dr. Crouther is a very picky grader. I got the highest grade on all the exams (i know because she read mine to the class and told them it was the highest) and never scored above an 88%. I a have a full tuition scholarship and am in the honors program... I shouldn't be making a B in a Gen. Ed. course. If you want an A it is next to impossible with Dr. Crouther.

The class was only hard because she was such a scatterbrain. she would assign things, forget the due date, push it back, and then get mad because no one knew her thoughts. there were supposed to be 2 journals, 2 critical essays, 1 outside event paper and a journal review. the only test is a final in which she decides a few days before what she wants to be on there. if you do not HAVE to take this class, save your time and money and take something that you will actually learn something from.

Dr. Crouther is a decent instructor if you are already a decent writer. If this is not the case I would strongly suggest taking a different instructor. I wrote a distinguished portfolio in high school and scored almost as high as possible on it. When I came into this class I wrote pieces that pulled Cs and Bs and she never gave me an A on anything. You have to work REALLY hard to get an A. You also have to read To Kill a Mockingbird which (I dont care what ANYONE thinks) is a terrible, monotinous book. Then your final is an in-class essay evaluating it.
Shes not terrible but be prepared to be challenged. She'll also really tell you how you need to improve as a writer and overall accomplishes what the class is supposed to accomplish.

Dr. Crouther's class was wayy easy. I hate english, and writing and having to read, but this class was cake. You have 3 journals to do, but they are easy. You just read a story and write how you feel about it. You have 3 exams, and one you do outside of class. You can miss up to 5 days before she drops you a letter grade, but check with her because i missed like 6 days and she only had 3 down. Take Dr. Crouther if you arent that interested in Lit, but interested enough to stay awake.

Daily essay's were a must in this class. She constantly went over the syllabus daily to 'renforce' it, yet changed her mind about small things like eating in class, to allowing you to not to leave and then changing her mind.
Requirements for the essays where often misunderstood which lead the class to having to rewrite numerous essays, when asked a questions rather then help us, we was referred to the book that we had questions about.
Over all, unless your already a strong writer do not take her!! My writing one week went from a C because it was 'overly descriptive' to the next having a F from not describing enough!!!

This course is pretty easy because Dr. Crouther repeats herself a lot. She gives you the Essays for the test ahead of time, so you can prepare your writing. The only thing she doesn't like is email and using the words a lot, nice, and guys. Other than that, she's cool. Bring your laptop to class and look up things for her and she'll give you extra credit!

We wrote at least ten essays in this class and I received and A on one of them I don't think anyone else got an A on anything. The rest of the class is easy it is all discussion, but you better be willing to put a lot of time into your writing.

Dr. Crouther is a very sweet, easily-distracted woman. However, don't expect to learn a lot about literature other than vocabulary words in this class. I believe the majority of this class was spent talking about blacks in pop culture. I read one (very short) novel the entire semester. She offers many extra credit opportunities. A typical student-led discussion/circle atmosphere. Also, be prepared to sing African-American spirituals which prove a little uncomfortable at times. Another quirk, she requires everyone to call each other by their last names (i.e. Mr. Smith or Ms. Jones). Overall, she's a very nice woman and the class was a nice break from typical 300-level English classes; however, again, don't expect to learn much about African-American literature.

Even Though This Class Was A Little Boring It Was Quite Easy. She Gives You Extra Credit For Defining Words and Bringing In Information. We Never Really Had Homework. The Only Work We Turned In Were Essays Which Were Graded and We Had a Few In Class Essays. The In Class Essays Were Very Easy. You Could Choose From Prompts Which You Are Notified About A Day Before and You Could Even Submit The Prompts. The Final Was Super Easy Too. It Was An Essay Over A Novel We Selected As A Class. We Got To Choose The Topic We Wrote About. The Teacher Is Very Helpful. The Only Set Back Is That She Grades Tough. Just Show Interest In The Class And Take Every Opportunity To Talk To Her..Or Let Her Look Over Your Pieces. Oh and She Spends Most Of Class Time Refering To The Syllabus. Don't Lose It!

Where do i start...hmmm well if you've read any of the other reviews of Dr.Crouther then you know that she goes over the syllabus all year long...god forbid you loose the damn thing. I spent most of my time in this class sitting there pondering many of the questions about life in general, while Dr.Crouther rambled on about an analogy to the iraq war. A majority of this class is sitting in circles and discussing absolutely nothing in what she calls "constructive criticism groups". Most of the class period you too will find yourself pondering why in the world you signed up for her class. I took AP english my senior year of high school thinking that it would help me prep for college english.....i could of spent my time doing something else. This class felt like freshmen english for high school.
Dr. Crouther also feels the need to have you move your desk's into a circle....but heres the thing about that....sometimes youll walk into the room and the desk's will already be arranged into a circle. She will then tell everyone to move their desk's to rows/ columns. Then not 5 minutes later request that we go back to the circle.....Each day class felt so repetative. I felt as though i was caught in groundhog day but it was just this english class.
Dr. Crouther also does not "hand out A's" so in other words if youre shooting for that coveted Magna Cum Laude status dont take her class. On just about every paper i have written i have either received between an 83-89...only one time this year did i get 1 of the 3 A papers shes given out by getting a 91. The test's are essay based, and you spend most of the previous days in class going over what the essay is going to be and giving her sample topics. She will then become the "nazi of paper grading". Im not that great of a writer but I find my writing to be at a high level. She will go through and nit pick every last detail. So hello 80-89 paper!
*heres a keeper for ya* The syllabus says buy the books, I say on the other hand save that 50 dollars and do something productive with it like burn it or hand it to someone passing by, hell thats a better idea then buying the course materials. You will NEVER need the book for this class.....EVER. She'll say you do but you wont.
I found myself the majority of the semester just cracking jokes or making odd ball comments. Then at times i would get serious and she would think the world of me. Just let it be known that if youre looking for getting a B in english your first semester then have at it with that slightly above average mentality. Obviously reaching for the stars is not your perogative, maybe like a low flying cesna or something.

Dr. Crouther is an excellent professor. Her class was my first upper-level lit class in college and she helped my through it every step of the way. Her office door was always open during hours and she was very flexible with appointments. The class requires one paper, due toward the end of the semester. I took my paper to her office numerous times for her input and scrutiny. People say she is tough on grammar, but what decent English instructor isn't?
I agreee, she does go over the syllabus a lot in class, falls behind and fumbles around some, but this does not take away from her openness to opinion, love for class discussion and level of involvement. If you ask her a question about any author she will give you textbook information, pulled from her brain.
Dr. Crouther is a learned woman who spent nine years in higher education to earn her PhD and, hence, deserves the right to prefer to be called Doctor. If you respect her, then she will respect you.

While far from being one of my favorite professors, Dr. Crouther is not that bad. This class is very easy. All you have to do is write these three little journals and write one little essay for each test. She wont accept your journals if they are longer than a page. She also has you do these little things throughout the semester like print something off line or something. Nothing hard at all. She is pretty easy except for some times she will contradict her self and she doesnt really give high grades. On almost everything everyone in the class would make a B. If they did the best job in the world or the worst. They got a B.

Dr.Crouther was the worst teacher I have ever had! I mean she is terrible, first of all you will spend at least two weeks going over the syllabus. If it is too long or if the ink is smeared she will take off points. She teaches nothing we just wrote papers and she gave us bad grades, never explaining how we could improve to meet her standards. She never answers questions so there is absolutely no point in going to ask her anything because she will tell you to go "look it up". Dr. Crouther is a very nice woman, especially outside of class. She likes for you to come to her office and speak with her outside of class. If you do this, it will greatly help your grade. Dr. Crouther falls far behind on her syllabus but she expects you to keep up. There may seem like there are many readings; however, you really do not have to read. There are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Dr. Crouther enjoys conversations in class, so come to class with things in mind to say. The grades consist of a midterm, 3 journal entries, 1 outside event, 1 research paper, and a final. Attendence is important because Dr. Crouther makes it a point to get to know you. I can begin by saying Dr. Crouther is extremely helpful and kind. If you're the sort of person who works or has a lot going on you might consider taking her for this course. She accepts work late, but don't abuse the policy. The course consists of several essays that determine your grade. They are done outside of class and you have a final that is written in class. The research paper is probably the hardest thing in the course. She is picky about the papers and will let you know if she is not satisfied. For example she doesn't like essays that are over two pages, double spaced typed. If you write more she'll hand it back and ask you to do it over. She's extremely kind and helpful though. Extra credit is available. And she will accept it right up until the end,

Dr. Crouther is a wonderful person and professor. She is always very willing to help her students if they are having trouble with any of the assignments. The material we covered in class was very interesting and she encourages class discussion- in fact, it is factored into your grade.
Naturally, the class is difficult -it is a 300 level class, but as long as you put forth some effort and participate in class an A is achievable. Before every essay, she presents the optional topics and even allows for students to suggest essay questions for the tests.
I would recommend this class to anyone.

While I received an A in this class and didn't do much work toward that, I did not like Dr. Crouther as an individual. She does offer assistance outside of class, so if she suggests it, you better be there. There is often a letter grade difference between the papers of those students who have had their's proof-read or not, regardless of content. Her grading is subjective, she is very judgemental, and pretty condescending. Easy A, but not a great experience.

Cons: You will spend three weeks (not exaggerating) going over the syllabus. She'll spend at least two days explaining plagairism. She'll stand up there mumbling, flipping through papers and never look up during the whole hour.
When you finally do get to the readings, you will have forgotten them already because the class will be so far behind schedule. My absolute biggest complaint is that she doesn't try to start good class discussions. She just says, "Does anyone have any comments about this?" Well, not when you put it like that! This class could have been really fun, but it wasn't.
She is extremely critical when grading papers. She will find something wrong with your paper no matter how wonderful it is. In my paper, she even corrected the grammar of direct quotes. Those weren't my words! I don't know what she was thinking there. She also corrects your writing to fit her personal style. She loves superfluous commas, and her word order is always the best. No matter how good your writing is, she will find fault in it, and if you dispute it with her, she will be right.
Pros: Despite all of these faults, she is a nice person. You can score big points by going to see her in her office for help with your papers. Go even if you don't need it--you'll get extra credit, though she doesn't advertise it. She chooses interesting selections to read for class--it's just a shame you never really get to explore them.

I was on my way to the first session of this class and told a friend where I was going, her exact words to me and I quote, "WHY!". I took this as a bad sign and was proven right upon showing up to the class. For two weeks, we did nothing but go over the syllabus. She is insanely picky when it comes to writings of any kind. If you do not write exactly what she wants you to write, down to the exact length of each paragraph, she will knock off points for your grade for every variation. The reason I put moderate as class difficulty, it is moderately difficult to refrain from falling asleep. If a class discussion gets going on something that is not related to African American Literature, but current events then the class is somewhat interesting. I like to compare the teaching style of Dr. Crouther to trying to kill flies with a Howitzer. For those who don't understand my metaphor it is a field artillery cannon. It means she puts an inordinate amount of time and effort into the least important details possible. When we started to discuss one of the textbooks, this woman sat at the front of the class and talked to us about the front and back covers of the book for two days. Then, discussed copyright information and acknowledgments for another day. If you are suffering from insomnia then I recommend this class, it may be the cure you've been searching for otherwise avoid it like the black plague.

Dr. Crouther is a very intelligent woman; however, she feels that everyone should live up to her intelligence and grades as such. No matter how good of a writer you are, she will most definitely find something wrong, thus lowering your grade. Most of your grade depends on journals you turn in and tests. The other things she asks you to do (keeping your own weekly journal, etc.) is pretty much not neccesary. Just worry about the work in which she specifies you must turn in.

This class has little to do with literature and more to do with current events. Dr. Crouther tends to stray from the subject, and she talks way too fast for you to write anything down. She requires a research paper and lots of other writing assignments, and she grades them pretty harshly. Be prepared: you'll spend the first 2 weeks of class going over the syllabus. No joke!

She rambles to much. If you go to class most of the time, outline a word or two in your book and turn all you work in on time, you wont have a problem. As for all the card reports, journals, and essays she encourages you to write, they are useless. You will do just fine without them.

Dr. Crouther is a good instructor for this course. She encourages participation and will grade on it. The majority of the final grade comes from the papers you write. She'll grade you fairly. A good writer will not encounter problems in this class. And if you do not consider yourself a good writer, take this course. Dr. Crouther will help you become one.

Dr. Crouther rambles on and on all class about information that you think you need to write down. But, she talks so fast that you can't understand her, and the tests have hardly anything to do with what she talks about. She is also very critical of writing, and nothing is ever good enough for her. It's an easy class, but the writing assignments will lower your grade no matter how good you write.

The professor rambals when she tries to get anything across. There are no tests, just written essays and a final. It was just hard to go to class because it served no purpose, it was easier to just do the essays and turn them in!
