If you don't go to this class every single day, you will fail it. If you don't follow along in the plays, highlight the quotes, and take careful notes about why she says they're important, you will fail it. If you don't listen carefully for information about the play's tme period, author, and plot in her introductory lectures, you will fail it.
If you do this stuff, though, and devote a few hours to studying before the tests, you'll be just fine. I gots As on everything, and I think I read maybe 2 of the 17 plays we discussed in class; the rest came from taking good notes and studying. (And extra credit! Go to local plays, audition for her playwriting class' final scenes, and the extra credit will rock your world!)
A lot of people complain that Dr. Taylor is anti-Christian. She isn't, she's Episcopalian, but she has no problem saying something controversial to illustrate an author's point of view or playing Devil's advocate to get a debate going about an issue raised in a play.

Professor Taylor is comical, but her humor quickly wears out its welcome. She is fond of going on verbal tirades and arbitrary "soapbox" rants often, and by often, I mean every single class that actually met for class.
I read the material. I bought and read all the scripts and enjoyed them. However, one expects that due to the class description and claimed purpose, the professor would review or at least address the characteristics and details of the script, and even more-so because the tests are entirely over comprehension of the premises and underlying components in the literature.
The tests did not test you for recalling details and insight to the story, but Dr. Taylor's personal insights to the literature. Sadly, we never discussed ANY of it in class, so safe to say, the entire class received less than perfect grades too often, and STRONG curves were a regular occurrence.
Lastly, for some reason, she got near-death ill supposedly and we did not meet for class for a third to a half of the semester. Most of the time, it was without warning or notification. There was a period where I didn't even bother to attend, and I was justified as class did not convene.
Furthermore, we were still ruthlessly tested over material without compensation for the missed class time and lack of given knowledge and taught preparation for the material.
I received my very first F because Dr. Taylor. She should be re-evaluated immediately and harshly. Truly, her instruction in my college career has been a travesty and I am disgusted by her classroom experience.

Ok, God love Professor Taylor but sheesh! The woman is very easily distracted! She would sit there and talk about movies MOST of the class period! And OF COURSE she had her select "favorites" in the class, her precious "drama kids" which was really no big deal but for those of us in the class who are not "actors" but "writers" it would have been nice to have had her spend more time on that aspect and then later focused more on the acting portion. Professor Taylor is a wonderful lady and will take time out to help you in any way she can but she's just so scatterbrained and as I stated earlier, easily distracted by movies. But I will warn you, if you do take this class with her be prepared and really READ and ANALYZE those damn plays! That is where most of your grades come in. Start working on your one act plays early and for goodness sakes find your actors early too!

Dr. Taylor is a really engaging professor. She's great at starting discussions in the classroom and connecting them to the works being studied. She's a total theatre freak, but she knows what she's talking about. She takes attendance, but it never seemed to matter grade wise if you were in class. I think she just liked to know who was there. Her tests were easy, although the final was long, I studied in one day and made an easy B. However, she grades really hard on the paper that you write towards the end, and she's a little slow getting back to you via e-mail. That being said, she is a very interesting lady, and I would definately reccommend her.

First of all, the class structure is not that difficult. There are assigned readings for every class, and you must write one 2 page paper a week. The largest part of your grade is a 10 page research paper and a presentation you give about it in the class. As long as you can follow the basic rules of formatting a gramatically correct paper you should be fine.
Now for Prof Taylor-the most close minded prof. I have had at Western. She is the reason professors should not have tenure. I have had many ultra liberal professors and none of them have treated students with contrasting opinions as poorly as this woman. It is comical that she builds herself up as an open minded, free spirited woman when in reality she punishes anyone who disagrees with her. Some theater students in our class performed very well so the special treatment she gave them was tolerable, but one student who hardly came to class, wrote a half ass research paper, and gave by far the worst, totally unprepared speech in the class received an A. I wrote my research paper on an issue she didn't agree with, so of course, she penalized me. Although she had to give me an A on the paper, for some reason I was the only person in the class she couldn't give the grade for the presentation on the same day because she couldn't decide if she was going to give me an A or a B. She obviously decided to give me the lowest presentation grade of the class that knocked my overall grade down to a B. Let me just say mine was the only presentation graded critically, and although I can't say it was the best, it was by far not the worst. If you decide to take her, be prepared to kiss her ass and soak in all the propaganda she releases in the name of teaching.

Dr. Taylor has had many experiences and uses them often in class. She enjoys class participation and discussion, but I got by with an A simply by reading summaries of the work assigned and coming to class. She goes over certain quotes in class from each work so underline them, know them for the test, and it's cake. This was not a bad class; I learned a lot and never dreading going.

Pat Taylor is a great many things, but boring is simply not one of them. While unabashedly liberal, she is fair and enjoys arguments with people of a different mindset, so long as they are able to argue their points logically (which, unfortunately, doesn't happen much with conservatives). Her lectures sometimes go off-topic as she tells stories from her life, but each story generally fits in with the theme of the lecture, if you have brains enough to read between the lines. She is fun, witty, and cares very much for her students. I would reccomend her classes for anyone who desires to learn, and is willing to put in the effort to do so. Her tests are essays, but the finals are sometimes matching, fill-in-the-blank, or true/false, depending on the amount of material to be covered.

Dr. Taylor is a cool woman. Her class is very enjoyable, and she is very funny. However, the tests are very hard to prepare for, and you must be specific in your answers and spell everything correctly. It is a cool class besides the 17 plays that you will have to buy and read. I liked her class even though it was hard to prepare for the tests.

I adore Dr. Taylor. If you're looking for an entertaining class, this is it. This has to be the easiest upper-level course I've had. There were no tests at all. We had to write a few 3-5 page papers on the assigned readings over the course of the semester. There was a research paper due (something like 8-11 pages) on the subject of our choosing at the end of the semester.

I hated this course but loved the teacher. I hate English in general and I'm just glad I passed. She's a great teacher. All you have to do is write 3-5 Essays about stories that you read and discuss in class and has to be 2-3 pages long. There's no final you just have to write a 8-10 page research paper. So it's one less final you have to worry about during finals week. She doesn't care what you write it on. Some teachers make you write it one something about your major but Pat doesn't care as long as it's something intersting. This class is a Gen Ed requirement and even if you hate English I would recommend her.

One of the worst professors at Western. She will try to force her opinions on you and if you do not agree your grade will suffer. Extremely liberal, anti-Christian--which is fine if she didn't go on and on about it and try to belittle those who disagree. Theater students should definitely take her because they will do very little to receive the best grades in the class. You must read every night even though most discussions turn into how great she is. Decent writers should do well in this class if you can tolerate such a closed minded prof.

Dr. Taylor is too good to teach at Western. This is exactly why she has a cult-like following. She has the background, depth, and diversity to teach at any school in America. I recommend her without reservation. Every class is taught with the quality of a Broadway performance. Neither can her brilliance be overstated, nor her vibrance. She will enrich your life far beyond the academic realm.
If you are lucky enough, by all means, take the opportunity to study in Cambridge, England. It will be one of the highlights
of your career at Western, as well as, the rest of your life.

Not the best, not the worst. My only complaint is that we seemed to rush through everything. She will read from the book before telling you what page to turn to, and by the time you find it, she's moved on to something else. The tests definitely require some studying, but they're not horrendous. Well, actually, the final is bordering on horrendous, but if you really study, you'll be okay. It wasn't hell, but I wouldn't take her again if I had the choice.

Dr. Taylor's stories and overall knowledge of Theatre is fascinating. I didn't talk much in class though she encourages it, because I loved listening to her talk. You can go see up to 3 plays for extra credit. The tests are made up of quotes and short answer. You need to attend class all the time because you have to highlight sections in the books you read. These are the quotes on the test. She is not sneaky with her questions or quotes and is fair with grading. If you are going to take this class, you have to READ! If you don't have time to read, make time or don't take the class.

The final is rough, but other than that the class is not too bad. Dr. Taylor is nice enough, but she goes way too fast in class. I feel like we rushed the whole time. Pat Taylor is the best teacher on campus and a strong female role model. If you are conservative, I would advise you not to take her classes, or else you might (gasp) learn something! She is very friendly and if you make the effort to get to know her, it will be well worth your time. She is absolutely brilliant. Be warned, however, that she will not mollycoddle you as far as tests go. They are essays, but hey, we're all over the age of 10 now, so i think we can handle stringing a few words together, right? To prepare yourself for her literature tests, know the significance of the play to the particular time period, the philosophical argument of the play, the style of the play (and what characterizes that particular style), and of course be able to match the author to the title. Child's play. I recommend sparknotes.com if you find yourself in a bind the day before a test.

Dr. Taylor is a wonderful teacher, and loves her job greatly. She helped me as much as she could, but the course was very difficult. You have to read a number of plays and then take an exam on them in essay form. You must know quotes, significance, relavance, etc. There are only two exams and then the comprehensive final. The only extra credit assigned was to see a play. This course is interesting, but should only be taken if required...or if you are REALLY into memorizing plays. Again, the professor is really great.

The class itself is extremely easy. You can usually get by without reading the assigned readings if you just show up for class to listen to Professor Taylor's lectures. She usually covers the important aspects of the reading. The only problem I had with this class is the research paper that is due at the end of the semester. If you fail the paper, you fail the class. The problem is Professor Taylor spends the whole semester making you read interesting, but wholly unimportant, essays and focuses on the research paper on the last few weeks of class. By that time, you'll be a nervous wreck trying to put together a decent research paper and presentation in the small space of time you have left. I highly suggest you get on it early. Thankfully, she is merciful when it comes time to grade the papers. Just as long as you can show that you know how to write a research paper, you'll pass. Otherwise, I really liked this class.

This is a hard course, but Dr. Taylor makes it wonderful. The first two tests are called essay tests, but they really aren't. They're short answer. You have to be able to explain the significance of a quote, as well as who said it and where it came from, but believe it or not, this isn't difficult if you've read and understood the material. Dr. Taylor picks quotes that you will be able to recognize from both the class lecture, as well as the content of the quote. The first two tests weren't terribly difficult if you keep up with the reading. The final is cumulative and primarily matching. You have to match author to work, work to period, topic of quote to who the quote is about, etc. The final was extremely tough, but Dr. Taylor is a very fair teacher. There is also an essay paper. The class is always interesting. I would gladly take Dr. Taylor again

Dr. Taylor is the type of person you enjoy talking to. But during class she is very biased toward her own opinions and grades by it if you go against what she thinks. Much of the class is entirely spent on talking about Religion and Racism. She often goes completely off topic and we end up talking about things that aren't really relevant to class or even the theme we are working on. The resarch paper is pretty in-depth but some advice to you is to pick a topic that has to do with Dr. Taylor's real love dramatic theater of all sorts. She teaches nothing on the paper itself and it's up to you to learn how to do it by the example shown in the book unless you actually ask her face to face about it. This class is easy but you really don't learn about anything besides her own opinions. But she is very nice to talk to and a teacher you can joke around with. Also, she is very understanding when it comes to due dates.

Pat is the most wonderful, intelligent, eloquent, existential diva, and all around superb professor (and friend) I have ever known. Yes, she does tell stories every class period, but if you pay attention and have half a brain you will realize that they are extremely relevent to the topics discussed. As to the number of books, for World Lit. she uses the same canon ever semester, in the Drama classes she only requires 10-15 inexpensive plays or photocopies them for you. Obviously the previous evaluations were done by people who don't know how to count. By the way , a music book can cost up to $200, so I can't see why these people are complaining. So all in all Pat is the best thing since sliced peanut butter. If your narrow-minded, or perhaps a religious freak, you should not take Pat's class. It would be a bit too much for you. This class is mainly for Theatre kids so unless you are one I suggest you not take this course. This class is not easy it requires the reading of over 20 plays and you must know quotes, charectors, and importance of quotes. Taylor goes over each play but it is usually rushed for she tends to get off on religon and sex and how her way of thinking is the right way, not to mention all the name dropping she does. Don't get me wrong most of the time these are interesting rambles, but they don't help you come test time. It is very easy for me to also say that this class is the most corrupt class I have every attended. In a class of over 50 students on test day there was never more than 15 students who took the test on the right day. She gives extensions to students in the theatre department she knows, and she knows them all. On test day she is never there, and a person comes in gives out the tests and leaves. I have personally saw a student for each test come in, get the test and leave. I know these tests were spread throughout the students getting their extensions. In all this said you can pass this class fairly if you are very very bright and devote all your free time to studing for this class, and if reading old boring plays is your thing. I warn you however don't take this class unless you have to.

Dr. Taylor is an effective teacher. She doesn't overload her students with knowledge, instead she points out the most important concepts and the students learn those concepts well. There are three tests, the last being a comprehensive final. The tests are short essay and quote identification, and the final is fill-in-the-blank and matching. Mark all the quotes she reads to the class and write down what she says they mean to use to study for the quote identification sections. There is also one 600-1000 word paper.

This course is a lot of lecturing and class discussion. Dr. Taylor is a lot of fun. She gives her opinions about the subject and allows for feedback. She is very direct, and is not shy. You will learn some interesting information that will not necessarily be on the test, but helps you to appreciate the course work and Dr. Taylor more. The tests consist of identifying quotes (who and from what work) as well as short essays about different topics. You get to pick so many questions to answer out of each section (identifying and short essay). In other words, there may be a list of 15, and you only have to answer 10. You also have to write a paper about a topic, using at least two works as examples. If you like to get a chance to actually talk about issues in the works you read, take her course!

This class requires you to buy about 25 small books, and it adds up to be pretty expensive. Dr. Taylor lectures the entire time, but her lectures rarely cover the material on the test. Most of it is just her giving her opinions and telling stories. She's a very entertaining professor, but her class doesn't prepare you for her tests. There are NUMEROUS texts required for this class. In all, you purchase about 25 books. (A lot of plays and they're little tiny books, but expensive, nonetheless) Extra credit is not available and attendance is mandatory. I enjoyed Dr. Taylor's class. I found her to be an interesting and intriguing woman. What I didn't enjoy so much was listening to odd stories at intervals and not really focusing on what the issue at hand was. Dr. Taylor makes even the dullest play tolerable (and there are quite a few dull plays).

Dr. Taylor is a wonderful teacher. In this course we mainly did writing workshop assignments, and she made them fun. The hard part is the plays you have to read and attend, but only if you procrastinate like me. I really learned alot and had fun doing it. I definitly recommend this or any other course Dr. Taylor teaches

Pat Taylor teaches an awesome class if you enjoy discussion. There are weekly 1-2 page papers due every Monday, but there are no exams. There is also a research paper to complete. She grades hard, but it is well worth it.

Dr. Taylor is a wonderful teacher! She's a true free spirit, and teaches like one... not overly concerned with knowing definitions or things like that, more with learning for learning's sake. The tests are pretty tough, but she is an excellent teacher. Some others might be easier, but I doubt they're as good!

Dr. Taylor is extremely interesting. Her sassy and agressive personality makes her a joy to listen to. Great lectures. The reading is all wonderful too. This class is a lot of fun--great reading, great discussion. You have to know your stuff for the tests, but I wouldn't consider it work.

Dr. Taylor is a wonderful professor. One of the best at Western. I tryed to take her classes even if i didn't need the credits. She has extremely interesting lectures and really opens your mind. Be ready to read everything, underline all the quotes in class, and take REALLY good notes as well as attend every class. That is all it takes to make a good grade in her classes. Her tests are hard and she requires a paper, but she is a fabulous professor!! She really cares about her students.
