Professor Rutledge is deemed a very difficult professor, but I absolutely loved this class. I had it on Saturdays, and it's really the only way to take this class. He likes the Saturday class, so it turns out better for everyone.
It is challenging, though. Attendance is required; there is no such thing as an excused absence, and if you're absent/late too many times, he starts taking points off your final grade. What he doesn't tell you, however, is that if you have perfect attendance, you get two bonus points added to your final grade.
The course is really designed so that it is not hard to pass, but you have to actually try. You can't fluff your papers, because he grades them fairly critically. You have three papers and three tests. the first two tests are all essay and are tough. The last test is 100 questions matching/multiple choice/true-false. Like 9 or 10 very small quizzes, of which he drops the lowest.
I made B's on two of the papers, a B on one of the tests, and because I aced the easy, easy quizzes, got an A on one of my tests and one of my papers, it was basically impossible for me to pass the last test and not have an A mathematically.
I highly recommend this professor if you don't mind coming to every class and actually trying on the assignments (you don't even have to try that hard; you just have to try.) He really makes learning fun and has so much to teach. Don't let the hype fool you; if you're here to learn, and don't mind coming to class, don't miss the chance to take this professor.

Dr. Rutledge is an amazing professor. He makes class very entertaining and interesting. The whole class consists of three papers and three tests (including the final) over short stories, drama, and poetry. The first two tests are all essays, but the final, over poetry, is 100 multiple choice, matching, and true or false questions. You have a reading quiz almost every day so attendance is important because you aren't allowed to make up work. The reading quizzes are very easy as long as you read the night before. Oh and his bow ties are awesome. Take this class!

This class is great! Instead of reading two dozen different authors, we focused on a select five. There are reading quizzes every class, but they are so easy. They are just five to ten questions over the basics of the story. If you read the material at all, you will do fine on the quizzes. He drop s the lowest two grades, and averages the rest of the quizzes together for one grade. There are five essays that need to be three to four pages. He is a slightly hard grader on the essays, but he offers tons of commentary so that you can get better. The final is comprehensive, but not too hard. Study your notes! Several of the questions were about the authors and the writing styles. Rutledge si an amazing professor that really cares about the students education. Take him!

What can I say about Professor Rutledge that others have not already said? Mr. Rutledge is an extremely intelligent and engaging professor. You will bless the day you decided to enroll in one of his courses.
You will learn much, much more than is required for the course, which is an intellectual blessing if you're serious about education.
I believe another poster commented that is should be a requirement to take one of Professor Rutledge's classes to graduate. I say, AMEN!!!
Please don't pass up the chance with this professor!

This is only a half hour course, but I felt like it deserved an evaluation. Rutledge is such a sweet man, and this is an easy way to pick up Honors credit and hang out with English majors once every other week. You literally drink tea, eat cookies, and listen to speakers all semester. THAT'S IT! You do have to write a paper, but it can be a poem scribbled on a napkin and Dr. R wouldn't care. He doesn't grade it; he just checks off that you coherently completed the assignment. If you can fit in this class, I would definately reccommend it.

Walker Rutledge is one of the sweetest professor's you will ever have. He is mild-mannered and has the greatest accent that makes listening to his lectures a pleasure. Plus, he knows so much about the material that his lectures are very interesting. There is quite a bit of reading involved (it IS a lit survey course) and you have reading quizzes pretty much every day. But the reading quizzes are multiple choice and a breeze if you read the material. There is no one text book for the course since you read poems, short stories and novels. You have to write three short (three to four pages) essays and the final is all multiple choice and true/false. He is a stickler for attendance but it's understandable since you cover basically a book per week. He is a great guy and VERY entertaining in class. I would give him to enthusiastic thumbs up!

Out of all my English classes here at Western this is the one I learned the least from. He is a really nice guy and very enthusiastic but its hard to follow him alot of the time. Also he has a really rigourous reading schedule- like expecting you to read an entire novel in three days, but if your taking this class you probably like to read already. Instead of having tests you have out of class essays that have to be four pages. It's hard to write them because he never gets around to talking about the subject until after you turn in the essay.

Mr Rutledge's class is the most literary cleansing class at Western. His reading assignments are very long (Moby Dick in two weeks), but once you've gotten through them you will understand the importance. His "tests" are take home papers that he grades difficultly, but go and see him with your paper and he will go over it with you, give suggestions, and correct grammar. Once you are done with the class you will know more about major early literary figures in America than you ever thought you would.

Professor Rutledge is one of my favortie professors so far at western. He made class so fun and interesting. You have to write an essay a week but if you e-mail it to him before it is due, he will proof read it, so I made A's on all of my essays. You also have a quiz every Monday but he drops the lowest grade. He does take attendance and you can miss up to 3 classes...so that kinda sucked but I would definitely recommend this class! Professor is a very smart man and really knows his stuff. I will be looking to take him for any other english classes i have to take in the future.

Professor Rutledge is one of the best teachers that I have ever had. He has a passion for the material that he teaches and a compassion for his students. He likes to crack jokes about the world and most of what he says is the truth. He makes you feel comfortable from the start, with his bowtie collection. He is always willing to work with you. He also gives extra credit, if you have perfect attendence. I am an ELED major and want to teach English, but Professor Rutledge helped me have the compassion that I need to teach it to others. He's awesome and knows his stuff. Keep up with your reading and he will praise you for that. I took his course in the summer, but I wish I had more time to get to know him.

Prof. Rutledge is widely liked by his pupils, so I feel I should speak up for the minority. I did not find the course inordinately difficult, and the workload, I believe, was extremely fair, but be warned...His opinion is the right one, and if you intend to explore the subject matter in any direction that does not coincide with his views, you will get nowhere. I ask a lot of questions, and thrive on intellectual discussion of literature, but this is not to be found in this course. If you are OK with this (as many apparently are) you will be fine, if not, you will be frustrated, but will still do well if you work. I would not describe him as a bad professor, but I would say he is a bit of a dictator.

This class is wonderful. It is for English Honos students. It meets one day every other week for 55 minutes. Dr. Rutledge provides tea and cookies. You sit around a table and discuss different things or listen to a guest lecture about different topics. It is fun and informative and a good break and an easy A. All you must do to receive an A is miss no more than one class and submit any piece of writing by the end of the semester. It can be a paper you submitted for another class, if you want. Great course. Definitely take it.

This is hands down the most rewarding class I've taken at Western. I'm talking about actually learning and retaining information beyond the semester.
That being said, I've also never worked harder in any other class. There is a lot of reading, but if you sign up for this class, you shouldn't mind that. Also, these are some of the best and deepest stories you'll ever encounter.
There are reading quizzes every class. If you read the material, they're usually easy (except for Go Down, Moses).
I believe you write five essays over the semester.
Also, if you don't miss any class, you receive two full points on your final average.
You are required to go on a field trip to either Chicago or Oxford,MS. Initially, I wasn't all too thrilled about this requirement; however, once we got down to Mississippi, I really enjoyed it. There are a lot of interesting places and people down there.
So, if you like reading, take this course. Before I took it, I'd never read Faulkner and had only read one of Hemingway's novels. Now they're two of my favorite authors.
Also, Professor Rutledge is amazingly knowledgable on the two writers (as well as a lot of other things). He's very entertaining in class, and genuinely cares about his students' success.
This class not only made me a more perceptive reader, but a better writer as well.

I just don't like him. I don't know what he's trying to be, but it is not working for him. We had a quiz every day after the first class. I read a novel a week. That, coupled with my other school work, was an over kill. The essays were a necessary evil and I believe there were only three. The final wasn't hard at all, I barely studied and I got an A--easy. You can only miss twice, he accepts no excuse. I actually went to the hospital. He doesn't care. Hospital stays, hangovers, they're all the same. I think that is why I don't like him.

I understand that in a survey course it is necessary to require a great amount of reading, but I think that the reading required for this course is a bit of an overkill. The argument that a student is in college and therefore should have no problem studying and reading 8 hours every night is lame, considering that the United States government and parents in general don't seem to care as much any more whether students go to college, so most of us wind up working 20-40 hours/week to keep our heads above water. And not all of us can read at work! I don't feel like I learned anything in this course, or at least I learned a tiny bit about a lot of things and a lot about NOTHING. If you MUST take a survey in literature, find another professor to teach it. Rutledge's course is OVERKILL.

Plain and simple, I loved this class. Professor Rutledge is the best professor I've had at Western. (So far) He has such enthusiasm for this course, and it really shows. He knows so much background and trivia information about Hemingway & Faulkner... you'll learn so much in this class that you would never learn in a general survey course. Integral parts of the class are the two trips you will take... one to Oxford, Mississippi and one to Oak Park, Illinois. They both are interesting, laid-back and fun.
Your grade is based on five essays assigned throughout the semester, and daily quizzes based on the readings. The final is a comprehensive essay comparing/contrasting the two authors. It sounds a little hanus, but its surprisingly easy. In addition, you can earn extra credit if you have perfect attendance. He will take off points if you miss more than two classes. It's a pretty fair policy.
This class has been the best I've ever taken at Western. Take this course with Professor Rutledge. You won't regret it.

This is probably not the best example of a typical class with Mr. Rutledge because I took a *SATURDAY MORNING 3-HOUR LONG* class of Eng 200. It was at 8:30 in the morning and the class was DEAD. The fact that the class was only held once a week was a problem because:
a) The class does not feel as much of a priority because your other classes that meet multiple times during the week have that added immediacy, meaning you don't put as much effort into the material for this class as you should.
b) If you miss two class meetings you're SCREWED.
Mr. Rutledge seems like an awful nice guy that knows his material very well but the circumstances of the class became its undoing. I have a feeling every last person is going to fail this class this semester unless some *SERIOUS* curving is initiated. Mr. Rutledge himself stated that he has never held a class quite in this manner before, so I don't imagine him doing this format again. I have no doubt in a normal class setting Mr. Rutledge is a fine instructor.

Dr. Rutledge is a very intelligent person and an effective professor;however, his instructing methods are biased, from a feminist's standpoint. In the first half of American Literature, our class did not survey a single female writer. When women's issues were brought to his attention, he dismissed them immediately. For instance, Rutledge dismissed Hester Prynne, from THE SCARLET LETTER, as an oppressed character--which is a major theme of the novel. Anyone who truly understands the definition of oppressed will clearly believe that Hester was a victim of her Puritian society and was oppressed. As far as the class structure is concerned, Rutledge gives quizzes every class period, gives two take home essay exams, two in class essay exams, and a multiple choice final. Not only do students need to attend class every meeting, read the assignments, and take notes--students must be proficient essayists in order to receive a decent grade in his course.
