Dr. Spurlock is an awesome professor! He's the best English teacher I have ever had! He makes the class interesting and is very passionate about teaching English. Dr. Spurlock covers a lot of material, but he makes the course very easy and he teaches in a way that the students can actually understand. Dr. Spurlock is a great teacher!

I loved this guy. He provided a very fun learning environment. There is a lot of group work in class that helps in the poetry unit. Toward the end of the semester it doesn't hurt to miss a lot. The final is cumulative but its easy if you have done all your homework...which will give you an easy A.

Once again, if you study more than I did, and go to class, you can easily make better than a C. You could probably get by without buying the book, since most of the stories and poems are available online. I don't like this subject, but this guy made it a little easier for me to endure.

Easy but decadent. His tests are pretty well straight from the notes. However, I felt bad by some of what he said and some of his jokes, though he is relatively nice. He is retiring soon.

Dr. Spurlock is well loved within the English department because he's (a) eccentric and (b) easy as all get out.
I honestly didn't feel in any way challenged throughout the entire semester, and though many may consider this a plus, I care about the education I'm paying for a little more than that. Spurlock's just too easy for me, and I honestly felt my interest wane throughout the duration of the class.
He's a fun and amiable guy though, full of clever one-liners and jokes about substance abuse -- and you'll certainly get by without any trouble. Just don't expect anything you couldn't gather from a text book.

Spurlock is the man, he's gonna retire soon so you might wanna take him soon. He knows just about everything about what he teaches. Even though the class is easy, the information you retain is a lot. There is also a 5-10 page research paper to do over sombodu in the book. Spurlock rules basically.

Professor Spurlock is easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's a very funny guy. He has a dry sense of humor, which he displays on the very first day of class to belay any sense of dread one might have. His tests are fairly easy, but you must develop your essay quite a bit and be sure to know everything there is to know about the subject. He has a fairly high radar on BS, so don't even try. It's not big deal though - aside from the tests, the only other thing you have to do for the class is a research paper on an author of your choice, which is cake. I highly recommend this class and this teacher!

Dr. Spurlock is the best professor that I have had at WKU. His class is very interesting and enjoyable. As long as you come to class, pay attention, and do the homework you will do just fine. He always makes the class laugh, for he has a good sense of humor. I highly recommend Spurlock; I wished that he taught Eng. 300. You need to hurry and take him, for he is retiring soon.

Dr. Spurlock is one of the best professors at Western. If you attend class, takes notes, and read the material, you will get an A. He gives the test questions the day before the test, so an A is easy to get on each test if you prepare. Class is interesting; Dr. Spurlock has a very dry wit that can be quite entertaining. There is a research paper, but you're told far ahead of time what the guidelines are, so that's easy. (You just have to do a 5-12 page research paper on any author, covered or not in class, in the textbook.) It's a wonderful class; I hope I get to take him again.

Dr. Spurlock has some good and some bad about his class.
The plus side: For English it is pretty easy. There are three tests that are weighed the same. These are 90% of your grade. The tests are essays that are easy to write if you come to class. He tells you what will be on the tests. The other 10% is from short story quizzes and poetry checklists. The short story section had some interesting stories, and the drama section was easy. Dr. Spurlock can be interesting in his lectures about Faulkner conferences and the sections of the class. The discussion groups for the short story and poetry can help you get your bearings if you don't understand.
The bad: Dr. Spurlock tells strange jokes and curses often. Some days it was really bad. He seemed to relish reading these words from the drama section. He is also kind of weird. The poetry section was harder and wouldn't leave you appreciating it. The extra credit was reading drama sections that were also cussy. I picked a section I thought was clean that wasn't and left me ashamed.
Bottom line: easy but might want to avoid or at least take cotton for the ears.

I'm sure you've heard about Dr. Spurlock by now. The class is "sort of" easy and "sort of" not, but it was definitely one of the best experiences I've ever had in the English department. You know the potential topics of each test going in to it, and unless you are a complete slacker or never come to class, you will be able to sufficiently prepare and get an A. Best yet, the class is very interesting, and you will learn. I've come away from this class with a deep respect for early American literature.

John Spurlock is the greatest teacher at Western. When I entered his class for the first time, I was scared that he was going to be very difficult; however, once I realized his unique sense of humor, I grew to love his classes. He is very intelligent and makes the class time enjoyable. I hope every English student at WKU has an opportunity to take him. If you're lucky, you might get to see his film debut in a Jesse Stuart documentary. It was awesome!

This was the best English/Literature professor I have ever had. His delight is for you to do good in his class and makes it possible for no one to receive below a "C" in his class. He makes it interesting and holds your attention. I hate Literature, but Dr. Spurlock made it to where I enjoyed it.

Dr. Spurlock is a great teacher and a wonderful person! He makes the course very interesting with his witty, though sometimes dry and subtle, humor, and the tests are fairly easy as long as you study for them. He tells you the class period before what the tests will be EXACTLY so that helps a LOT. I will be taking him in the summer for I fear he may not be back soon! Take him, he is great

Dr. Spurlock's class is extremely easy. His tests consist of 3 essay questions, and he gives you the questions the day before the test. There were 27 people in my class, and on one of the tests there were 24 A's. The material is interesting and Dr. Spurlock has a great dry sense of humor.

He is an excellent teacher. You have to take down several notes, but not an overkill. He's funny, and is easy-going. If you miss class, he wants you to call him. He even gives out his home phone number. He's really laid back though, and will help you out. If you listen and study (at least a LITTLE) you can get an A.

I can tell you fancy or I can tell you plain... take this man's class! He is extremely funny is his very dry way. His tests are composed of a few essays which he will give you ahead of time and he offers a chance for extra credit if you read in class. The class is easy and enjoyable, because he knows his stuff but is still not too tough on his students. If he writes it on the board, take it down as gospel! Not many notes, but you will use the ones you take! One of the best teachers I've had at Western! Highly recommended!

Dr. Spurlock speaks very softly and slowly but if you listen closely, you realize he is actually very funny. Tests and exam are also essay but you know exactly what he expects of you in order to get an A on them so he doesn't pull any punches. We had to read one novel and then many short pieces. I thought the class would be very boring but it was a good experience.
