All of the people who have left poor evaluations of Dr. Troutman are the ones who did not bother to show up for class, take notes, or study for the tests. This is a class with quite a bit of information and you, as a college student, are responsible for it. If you are lazy and do not want to attend class, do not take him. If you take your classes seriously and put forth a moderate effort you will do quite well in his class. He is very nice and always available to his students that need assistance, as long as they were willing to take responsibility for learning the course material.

Dr. Troutman is very nice, and always willing to talk and answer questions. However as even a history major I found him to beat the subject to death with overbearing notes that sometimes would be upwards of 3 or 4 pages a class period. Most of which of the main information is very lightly covered, if even. Expect to do some studying on your own. He gives you a study sheet with everything on it, unfortunately there is just too much info.
He is also not very clear on what he wants on his who, want, when, where, why essays. I would strongly suggest to stay away from this class unless you absolutely have to take it with him. If your a history major, you might find his class slightly more tolerable, but only if you want to bust your ass and still be mediocre.

Dr. Troutman is a good guy at heart, but should not be teaching a typical first semester freshman class. I have seen some leave Western because of this class. Trust me - it is not IMPOSSIBLE, just EXTREMELY HARD. You will learn how to study - but he takes off for spelling and on is identity questions (who, what, when, where, why) you never know what he wants exactly, and he will take off points. He is solid in his old-time beliefs, and should retire any minute.

Hmmm....notice a trend with all the sad faces? I have not had a bad professor in my first year of college, with one exception....troutman. So very boring...and yet so very difficult. I took a 300 level class in my major that was supposed to be the hardest class I would ever have to take. That class was so easy compared to his. He brings his religious beliefs into lectures and tells all of us youngins' that we are immoral people. His tests are unbelievably hard. I am not some person who writes and complains a lot on profeval. This is my first sad face ever that I have posted. Really, don't take him. You will either drop....or won't get an A no matter how smart you are. With so many history sections you can make room for someone else.

If you are taking this class as a freshman then be prepared for what youre getting into. Dr. Troutman will make it clearly apparent to you after your first test that his class is not only a History Class but an English Class as well due to the fact that he takes points off for grammar, spelling, and punctuation on essay questions. Each exam consists of 20 multiple choice, 10 fill in the blank, 15 matching, and 8-10 of the short answer essays. You CAN NOT miss class. If you do not know every single detail of the material (which consists of 25 front and back pages of notes per test) on the day of the test then you will not pass his class...PERIOD. The man is a genius though and knows history better than anyone in the department. You will learn lots of stuff if you study and take the class seriously. Troutman sparked my interest in history and made me change my major to it.

Do not take this professor for what should be a moderately difficult general education course. He lectures all period and is terrible at it. More importantly when you have to take a test he wil count off on every essay question. EVERY SINGLE ONE...ALL SEMESTER. There is no leniancy. This man is stuck to his ways and you should avoid him at all costs.

Troutman is a history teacher who is in the middle of his retirement. -Meaning the class is all lecture, with a great amount of notes and all the information is up in his head so there is no book to study from. His tests are a little of everything with at least 10 essays/identifications per test. He says you may buy the book but I cant see it helping significantly. Nice guy, knows his information but the class is extremely hard. You are only graded on the tests and there is not extra credit. If you REALLY enjoy history you may enjoy the class.

Dr.Troutman is the worst teacher I have ever had!! He spoke so fast durring his lectures and if you asked him to repeat something he got angry. In his class you would take at east 5 pages of notes a day. He makes his tests really hard! I was valedictorian in my high school and I barely pulled a C in his class.

Mr. Troutman talkes 80 miles an hour, which he expects you to write everything down he says. He also talks about things that could be unimportant, but when it comes to test, thats where you see it. He doesnt write too many notes down, but every day you walk out of there with at least 3-4 pages of notes. I recommend a different Professor.

Dr. Troutman's class is the worst class I have ever had!!! Everyday the little guy would come in and read his notes (the same notes for the past 80 years) in his BORING monotone voice that will put anyone to sleep! Expect to take at least six pages of notes a day! His test are ridiculously hard, because the multiple choice part is always about things that he made seem unimportant. And the majority of the test was short answer and essay, to get the 3 points per question, you had to know who what when where why how as well as all events leading to the question, an all events since. Mind you there where usually 20 of these questions per test. Yeah right! Isuggest you find a different history proffessor as soon as possible!!!

Dr. Troutman was an excellent professor. If you think that you can b.s. your way out of test, forget it. You must study EVERY SINGLE DAY for at least a hour a day. He gives between six to eight pages of notes every period... and most of it is on the test. If you do not like to study, drop him. He loves his students, though. So, please do not hestitate to contact him. He was my favorite professor this past semester.

Dr. Troutman not a very effective professor. There are so many notes that you have no idea where to start studying for each test. He talks a mile a minute and at a very monotone level, which is extremely boring. His tests are very difficult, you have to know the exact answer and its spelling. He does not give you the benefit of the doubt on anything. You have to read a novel for the final which you have to pick out of a list he provides. None of the novels are less than 500 pages. If I were you I'd look for a different professor.

This is a very hard professor! The notes are way overkill and his tests are very hard! He is friendly though and seems to care about the students, but he offers no sympathy or extra credit opportunities. I would not recommend this professor if you are looking for an easy class.

He is a very nice person but a pretty difficult professor. Tests are mainly based on class notes. You really have to study and learn the material thoroughly to get a good grade.

Troutman Knows his stuff. Maybe cause he was there. Joking. He expects way to much from his students. I took 2 notebooks worth of notes in single note books, front and back. His test are very hard. You really have to know the overwhelming about of notes you take. He makes sure you know the little details. Even though I didnt do so well in the class I will say that I learned alot. If you are really good...I do mean really good at History and want a challange, take Troutman.

His class makes for a great nap time. He is so boring and monotone that you can't stay awake. The amount of notes is ridiculous. He is a fairly nice old man, but he doesn't really care what kind of grade you receive. Try and find a more interesting teacher, that's not so old.
