DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!! He is the worst teacher you could take for Math 116! He doesnt use a calculator, he doesnt have notes prepared for you ahead of time, he doesn't use My Math Lab (so thats a waste of $100), if you ask him a question in class he wont answer but instead give you a sarcastic answer and laugh about it, his test are HARD! If you answer one long question wrong forget about passing that test! Thats 30 points off your grade! He never gives homework so you better do good on your test because thats your grade, he says he gives quizzes but constantly forgets about them, so all your left with are the test grades. Hinestly, his class is horrible dont take it

He is a very uneducated teacher himself. He Often would write problems on the board and not know how to answer the question himself. 90% of my class was going into the final with an F in the class. Very poor teacher hope you can take some one else.

The only reason I say this course is difficult is because I am not a math person to begin with. If I were I'm sure this course would've be easy/moderate. Dr. Shindhelm knows what he is talking about, but only teaches one way and if you don't understand, he's not good at helping you understand because he just repeats what you didn't get in the first place. He's got an okay sense of humor, but get ready to hear the same jokes all semester long. If you're a math person, this course will be simple. There are only five exams for your grades, but he lets you take as many make-up exams as you want until the next exam is given. This course was difficult for me, so if you're and English/History person, be prepared for a stressful semester when it comes to this class.

I currently finished this semester with a grade of F he is not the teacher to take he makes inappropriate comments is less than helpful and doesn't follow his own rules. he spends his entire time writing on board only to end up with the wrong answer. he is a condescending person who has little or no personal respect for others and i would avoid him at all costs. you wont learn anything that you can ever use again because he doesn't ask you to solve equations but rather restate them in his own language. it was a poor waste of time money and my humanity.

Math 116 is not supposed to be this difficult. This man has to prove to everyone how smart he is by making students feel stupid. He is not kind, and makes fun of you if your answer is incorrect. I had an 89.66666667 and he wouldn't round that to an A for the final, and he wrote it down as a 89.5. He will make this class way harder than it needs to be. I had an A on the last day to drop so I didn't drop it, thinking I could do it. PLEASE drop him and take it another time you will regret continuing his class, TRUST ME! He is awful, makes WKU look terrible, and needs to retire.

This professor is horrible!!! All he does is write on the board with very little explaination to how he got his answer. if you ask a question he will just repeat what he said earlier. Its not like you didnt hear him, you dont understand what the hell he's talking about and he will not explain it more clearly or in more basic terms. I took this class in my high school and am doing the exact same thing this year in his class. Last year i was one of the top math students, this year (doing the same exact thing!!!) i am barely passing or understanding what is being taught because if how wordy his is and how uneasy he is to follow. Do not take this class. EVER.

This professor is the gatekeeper to hell. He is a know it all and thinks you know nothing. He is an old withered up man who has nothing better to do than to torture his students (he gets pleasure out of this). He has no sympathy for any students and does not care. Dr. Shindhelm is satan's understudy. DO NOT TAKE HIM! You will regret every moment in his classroom. Suicide sounds better than taking his class. Enter his class at your own risk.

Contrary to popular belief on this site, Dr. Shindhelm is an amazing professor. Unfortunately people do not understand the fact that Computer Science is a difficult field and is not for everyone. With that being said, Dr. Shindhelm is a tough professor. He expects only the best from his students, and wants everyone to do well. There are a lot of notes, and he does get a little confused while lecturing, but to be honest, who hasnt when writing code on the board... Dr. Shindhelm is a wonderful professor and you should definitely take him if you would like to challenge yourself, and not just breeze through a class.

I found this course to be fairly easy but the problem was understanding the way the professor explained things. He definitely knows his stuff but isn't always very clear. I would recommend him even if you're not strong in math. He gives a huge curve on exams and allows as many retakes as you want. If you do well learning on your own, the course will be a breeze.

He is not that horrible. I think all math professors have a hard time of explaining how to do math problems that they can do in their heads. Dr. Shindhelm lets you take as many retake exams as you want because those are the only grades he takes. And when you get your exam back he gives a VERYYY gracious curve. I got 14 points added on to a test which gave me a 98. You can ask as many questions as you want he is very willing to help you make sure you understand. All of his tests are cumulative which is good because you won't have to stress about the final by trying to relearn everything from the beginning of the semester.

The teacher really sucked until we realized that our lowest test grade got dropped. Then, he sucked again.
Make sure and study your notes.
Test materials are CUMULATIVE (as in past tests).
Don't forget to turn in projects.

I had always considered myself a strong math student until taking this class. Math 118 is a combined course of college algebra and trigonometry. This course is very fast paced and time consuming and if you have any other classes that you even need to open the book for you can forget about getting an A for the course. Dr. Shindhelm is however a very good teacher and tries to help his students the best he can. He does offer a few points of extra credit in some cases but not enough to make a difference in your grade. The extra credit is used to encourage critical thinking than anything else. If you do not have a strong grasp of mathematics this class is not for you. If you do decide to take this class you can say good by to your social life for the semester as you will be studying for this class every night if you expect to pass. In conclusion I commend you for wanting to kill two birds with one stone in getting both 116 and 117 out of the way at the same time, but just be sure it will be worth it in the end.

Dr. Shindhelm is useless as a teacher. While this is an introductory computer science class for non-majors, the only people who do well in the class are those who already know a decent amount of programming. What he writes on the board is what will be on the test, so it is nothing more than memorization and regurgitation. The book is useless because it does not explain anything, it only tells you step by step how to do the included activities, which this teacher never refers to. Most of the time he confuses himself while writing code on the board, sometimes he will stare at the board in silence for several minutes before he figures out what he was trying to do...then if you try to use the code in VB it rarely actually works. He's in his office quite often, but when you ask questions he can be condescending and tells you he went over it in class, and wont explain anything in any greater detail. Often he simply replies with "well whats in your notes?...well if thats what I said my answer is the same now." In order to do well you have to literally memorize word for word pages and pages of notes, including syntax, and even with that it is still a toss-up as to whether you will be able to figure out what the hell he's asking on the exams.

As far as a teacher, he is probably the best person to get for CS-230. While his name does not suggest it, he is an American. He is willing to help on VB programs and seems to want students to do well in the course, but he does have his problems. Sadly, his exams test a student's IQ rather than his or her ability to actually work out Visual Basic Problems. Whenever you have to write code on the exams, he gives very little partial credit. Also, his exam are all cumulative, which means that all of his exams are like taking a final exam. Also on these exams, many problems will come from the notes, but he will always have one problem worth 20 points that is a million times harder than anything you have done so far in the course, which means an 80% is as high as you can hope to get unless you are some kind of CS prodigy.
You have three exams (not including the final) and he takes the average of the two highest exams. You have NO homework other than three or four short computer programs that you have to create.
My suggestions if you take Shindhelm (he is a good teacher):
- Know class notes like the back of your hand

If only he gives more importance to testing the level of understanding in a particular topic rather than trying to test his students' IQ, the class would have been much better.
