If you have to take this course, definitely take Mrs. Russell. At the beginning of the semester I was in Ian Schnee's class, and I switched to hers. While my friends in Schnee's class were doing countless hours of homework, my homework took me a few minutes to do for her, and we rarely had any. Her tests are very easy, and attendance is not mandatory. She is such a nice lady, and the class is not difficult at all if you take it with her. You can also get on her good side by actually coming to class. Then she loves you.

This woman is the devil. She tried to hide it behind her tiny, soft spoken voice, but really she is evil at heart. Three tests, all with multiple essays, none worth more than 40 points... it is ridiculous. There is a research paper, only worth 10 points. This is a 300 level class, and the entire course was only worth 125 points. It is unheard of. It is only offered as a night course, 2 hours and 45 minutes long and don't ever expect to leave a minute early. The class drags and drags on because all she does it talk.If you don't have to take this class, DON'T!! It was required for me as a nursing major. The good thing is, I think this was going to be her last semester! Lucky for the rest of you!

I had Dr. Russell for Intro to Phil, BioMedical Ethics, and Love and Friendship. She is one of the best professors at Western. I honestly don't see how anyone can say she is not open to others beliefs. She has always met with me and answers my e-mails back very quickly. She is a professor who will meet with you until you understand something and doesn't hurry you out the door. She actually has even helped me in some of my other classes that require some information about philosophy. All of her tests are essay but if you go to class and listen you will be fine. Just take notes. She will give you a review sheet for every test including the final and if you study that you will be fine. She truely is a great professor and you learn alot in her class. I would not have made it this far in my philosophy minor without her!

Dr. Russel is overall, a good professor. She's not extremely exciting in class, and she has an extremely soft voice that can lead to you dozing off if you haven't gotten enough sleep the previous night. She says the textbook is required, and I highly recommend you get it, but I barely read it, only to review some, never entire chapters and I still pulled through with an A. Her tests are completely essay, and its sometimes difficult to know exactly what she wants out of a question. And she's not afraid to take away partial credit if she feels you haven't completely answered something. So if writing isn't your strong point, steer clear of her section. Otherwise, the class material isn't the most exciting either, but she does a good job in teaching it and depicts a clear understanding of it. She's extremely nice and overall, I consider her a great professor.

I honestly enjoyed this class and Ms. Russell is a sweetheart. She is very easy to talk to and get along with. She will explain any information to you that you don't understand, and will help you in any way that she can. All of the exams are essays, but Ms. Russell understands that none of us are English majors. I highly recommend Biomedical Ethics to anyone, and advise you to take it under Judy Russell!

Well, I now despise philosophy and crinch at the mention of the subject. The course wasn't difficult, but the professor made it very frustrating. If you didn't agree with what she said in class while she was teaching and didn't write it down word for word, you were wrong. She was very biased and seem to take up with the brown-nosers. She gave one boy an exceptionally hard way to go because of his beliefs. He mostly disagreed with her, let her know it -- and was very nice about it and explained himself thoroughly -- yet she still made him look like an idiot by the infamous quote: "No, I don't see what you are saying, but I GUESS that could be right."
No, I do not have bad feelings towards Professor Russell because she gave me a grade other than an A, but because of how she would pick favorites and make everyone else feel like idiots just because they didn't think the same as her. She would not explain subject matter thoroughly, have fair class discussions (you were wrong if you didn't say exactly what she believed), nor would she prepare efficient notes. Overall, as you may have guessed, I despised every second in this class. You might be different and like this joke of a class, but not me...Philosophy is for those who only care about being right...ALL THE TIME.

the only reason why i think this class was difficult is because her style of notes is horrible. If you write down everything she writes and write down the main points, you will still have a hard time . I thought everything would be fine, then one day i looked at my notes and realized they meaned absolutly nothing to me, there was just a bunch of random words and lots of arrows that she uses. I could even use the text book because its writen as just one big paragraph. I ended up using the internet to look up the topics on the test, and I still dont think that worked as well as i thought. I came in with an open mind, and i leave kind of frustrated with Russell. if you have to work for your grades and study before test then do not take her, but if memorization and listening is your thing then Russell is your woman.

Ok, she was extremely nice, a little weird, but nice. I'm sorry, but she CANNOT teach. I could tell she knew her stuff, but she was very dry. I believe that this could have been a very interesting course had some enthusiasm been put into it. She will help you if you need it, but not a lot. The tests were average, sometimes a little difficult. I would not take her again.

I LOVED Judy Russell! I had taken this class previously under andother professor and received an F. I received an A out of Judy's class. Unlike other philosophy professors, she, along with having a thorough understanding of her topic, demonstrates it very well. She was always willing to give help when needed, explains herself very well, and understands that the topic is hard to learn; making it easier for everyone. She seems to really relate to students (learning-wise), and keeps an unbiased and open mind when demonstrating her topics. I would recommend Judy Russell, PHIL 120 to anyone!

Great teacher.
The class can be a little dry at times with names of historical philosophers and such, but she really enjoys Philosophy so she tries her best to teach it enthusiastically.
Take the notes in class! and at least print all the extra readings (you can use them on tests).

Judy Russell was a very good teacher. She presented the material very clearly and discussed all reading selections in class. She also covered all of the essay questions and papers in class so if you show up and pay attention (and maybe read) you'll do fine. It is true that she does not provide definitive answers to alot of the questions asked in class but it is philosophy, very little is black and white.

Judy Russell is not a good teacher. When asking her a question she will beat around the bush and then ramble about somthing else. You will never get your question answerd. Taking notes is incredably hard because she mainly uses examples to teach. There is rarely a cut and dry answer for anything she says. When grading she grades like an english teacher. If you sound like you know what your talking about and make it pretty you will do better than having real knowledge. But to get a good grade you will have to discuss things she herself couldn't in class. If you get her good luck. Your better off using spark notes and google to find concrete information.
