A lot of people complain about MagDaddy's rules but they're not really that hard to follow. Every professor would prefer that their students show up for classes and stay awake during them. I really didn't take many notes, its all about understanding the concepts. If you pay attention to the practice problems in class and understand how he works them you will do well. Just don't focus all your time on 300 and forget about this class.

Dr. Magner is pretty tightly wound but overall is a good teacher. The course is quite difficult but if you really want to be a acct major then all your effort in this class will truly pay off. In order to pass you should really work in groups and do the prep questions he has for the test.

Do not take Professor Magner. He knows accounting very well but is a crappy teacher. This is the second time I have taken 201 and it even harder than before. He teaches the more difficult and vague way. In most chapters he teaches 4-5 different ways, when there is one easy way to do it. The homework he assigns has more application than what he covers in class. He will yell at you if you get up in the middle of class, even if its to go to the bathroom. He makes Acct 201 much more hard than it already is. Even the advisers recommend you to not take him. Don't do it.

Dr. Magner is a wonderful teacher. He is very well prepared. His classes were very structured which made them easy for me. You always knew what to expect regarding classroom discussions/activities, assignments, and exams. He not only knows the accounting concepts but he is excellent in breaking them down and expressing them in a way such that anyone can understand them. His class was very challenging. I learned a great deal.
He is very quick to respond to emails. In addition, he is flexible in making arrangements to meet with students if the need arises.
Great teacher.

Like any accounting class, go to class, take notes, study a lot, and you can get an A. If you don't, this class may be really hard. Magner himself is very arrogant and annoying as he constantly uses really big words unnecessarily. However, he is a great teacher and really knows accounting. You can ask him questions anytime and he is usually helpful. The best recommendation for this class for doing well is simply go to class, take notes, and study...a lot.

Magner does prohibit cell phones and laptops, but I didn't have a problem with that. I needed to concentrate on the class. The atmosphere was a little tense, primarily the first few weeks, as he told students to put their phones away. He doesn't mind if you leave the class quietly unless you do it repeatedly. A number of people did it throughout the semester and he only said something to one guy who got up three classes in a row.
The material is primarily made up of topics covered in Acct 201. There were times Magner had his own way of doing things that was different from the book and 201. I thought his way was usually more confusing and only made those particular topics more difficult.
In class, Magner is rather stiff. When he admits a mistake he made and attempts to make a joke about it, it seems forced. Outside of class I found him to be very nice and easy to talk to. It would be great if he could be more like that in class.

Magner as a teacher:
-Has a very thorough understanding of course topics.
-Presents the material in a clear, organized way.
-Is approachable and helpful, I suppose.
Magner as a person:
-Pompous, VERY full of himself.
-Hard to listen to b/c he's so annoying.
-Makes what should be a moderate class into a difficult one b/c throughout class.
Unfortunately he's the only person that teaches this class, so prepare yourself. Hopefully you have a higher tolerance level than I do.

Prof. Magner is a horrible teacher. He understands the materials well but does a very poor job of communicating and teaching it. He's very rude and calls people out for little things like going to the bathroom for to long so make sure you hold it. His exams are extremely hard because of the way that he words the questions. Between him and Ross I changed my major far away from Acct.

Dr. Magner is very detailed in his course outline. He likes to involve the class with questions and to make sure you're paying attention. He does have the habit of embarrassing people regarding working on other material while in his class. Do not work on other assignments, be on time, and try not to miss more than 3 classes. I found him very approachable after class & before class to answer questions regarding the practice problems. The multiple choice questions are difficult so you really need to study the problems you know will be on the test.

This is a much eaiser class than 310. There are no quizzes and the final is just another exam and is not cumulative. There is a lot of homework each week but it is not to hard to do. He is a very lenient grader when he grades the homework quizzes. There are 3 exams worth 100 points each which consit of 4 mandatory essays over the concepts that you learn in class. There are about 10 or 11 homework assignments worth 20 points a peice (the lowest two are dropped) There are 3 formal cases that are worth 50 points a peice. Finally, If you want to make up some ground on your accouting GPA this class is one to take.

To say the least, Magner is very precise with his lessons. You will not need to read the chapters as long as your print out the slides prior to class and take notes from what he writes down. He will give you take-home quizzes that are not as hard as the ones in 301. For the exams, he will tell you what the big problems will be over. There are two problems for each exam. As long as you know the processes from the main example of your notes for the chapters he tells you, you should do well on his exams. Don't try to memorize forumulas, but instead try to learn and understand the processes from the chapters.
Good luck!

A lot of ppl do not like Dr. Magner because he is a little dull or dry. However, a lot ppl are afraid to approach the man with questions. If you have questions go to him he is a laid back guy that is willing to help you. His test consist of apporximately 14-20 mc questions and 2 problems. The problems arent bad he tells you what types of problems will be on the test. I found this class to be easier than 300. He doesnt give extra credit but like Dr. Ross he also curves the tests and at the end of the semester if youre within a point of another letter grade he will give you that letter grade. There is an excel project but its not that bad if you have worked with excel before.

I know that Dr. Magner knows his stuff, however I don't feel like he knows how to interact with his students. I don't feel comfortable at all approaching him, and when I do go to his office I feel like he's wanting me to get out as fast as possible because I'm inconveniencing him. His tests have way too much computation involved for the amount of time allocated. I'm an "A" student and I have not done great on his tests so far. He does not curve the tests, he does not offer extra credit, he does not round your grade up - he's very strict and straight forward with his grading policies. To his credit he does give you carry thru credit on the problems that you solve on the tests. For example, if you messed up on a computation in the beginning he would take off the points at the front end and then give you credit for the rest of the problem. The final will be cumulative, multiple choice, and it's worth 130 points. I have not enjoyed this class at all because I feel uneasy about Dr. Magner. Unfortunately, he is the only one that teaches this class so you'll have to have him. He's very prompt about starting class on time and really frowns on people getting up during class to use the bathroom, get water, etc. He also does not look favorably upon students missing class. I put that attendance was mandatory simply for this reason. The class itself should not be a hard class, but the way he presents his tests and the material is challenging. I hope that you will have a better experience than I have had thus far. Good luck!

If you are going to major in Accounting, you will unfortunately have to take this class. My poor rating is both for the class and the professor. Dr. Magner is the only professor who currently teaches ACCT 310.
Your grade is determined as follows:
There are six 16 point quizzes that pertain to a topic you recently learned. He will drop the lowest grade.
There is a project worth 30 points. This is not a group project. You will turn in a paper and the disk. Be sure to read the directions very carefully. This project not only wants you to know how to do the problem, but also how to correctly format an accounting spreadsheet.
There are three exams worth 100 points each. These exams are a comination of MC and problems. These tests are very difficult. I would suggest that you practice the homework problems and attempt to do the suggested practice problems. It took most students the entire class time to take the exams.
The final is cumulative MC, and again very difficult. It is worth 150 points. It is impossible to have an A before taking the final, thus it is mandatory.
Dr. Magner is very intelligent and thoroughly knows Cost Accounting. However, he is not a good teacher. I (and others that I have spoken with) do not understand how we could do so well in ACCT 201 and not replicate those same grades in ACCT 310, given the fact that the material is essentially the same. Dr. Magner believes that students memorize formulas and layouts in ACCT 201 and seems to design his tests and quizzes so that you cannot memorize the material.
Dr. Magner has little patience for tardiness and students who don't pay attention. He will call you out if you are sleeping or doing something rather than Cost Accounting. Class begins promptly and you will stay the entire class period (and then some).
Though ACCT 300 is supposedly the "weed-out" class, I know of many more people who have changed their major because of ACCT 310. I would not suggest that you take these two classes simultaneously. In order to do well in 310, you need to devote some time to the class.

Dr. Magner test are very hard and you don't have enough time to finissh them, you take a 3 hour test in 75 min. His class should be the WEED OUT class, it is very hard. He knows what he is talking about but isn't good at teaching it to his students. You can't study for his exams, it is impossible to do good on one, and his quizzes are just as bad.

Dr. Magner is tough on tardiness and does not like absences. Although no attendance policy is in effect, he notices and will call you out on it. Also, don't even attempt to work on anything else in class, he will call you out on it in front of the entire class. Exams are fairly straight forward.
