Faine is pretty high-tech with this class. You don't even have to attend if you don't want to. Everything is online. The only reason you would need to come to class is for exams. Even videos that you need to watch are online. The quizzes online are pretty hard but the exams aren't too bad.

Stats in general is a difficult class but Dr. Faine tries. He is outspoken and may seem angry all the time but he knows what he's talking about. If you can get passed his sarcasm, you'll be fine. He also helps you if you don't understand something.
All the notes and homework are posted on blackboard at the beginning of the semester. He discusses the notes in class and makes sure you understand what is being said. You sometimes start the homework in class and he has you finish in for homework (there are only 10 chapters and 10 homework assignments). He goes over the homework in class but never checks it.
The exams are online and you can take them up to twice a day as many times as you want. He gives you online practice exams which you can take as many times as you want but close the day of the exam. You can take whatever exam you want, even during finals week. After the 5th exam (which is the week before finals), you'll know your grade and if you're happy with it, you don't have to go in during finals week.
He takes attendance every class but it helps your grade in the end.
He gives you an extra credit exam online worth 25 points and you can take it as many times as you want before finals week.
He basically gives you everything you need to get an A. I recommend him!

This class is the most organized class I have had and Dr. Faine will announce that the first day. Print out your modules and do your homework. This is SUCH an EASY A!! You can retake the test and quizzes as many times as you want but be careful because each test gets harder and it is a building step class. Dr. Faine is soooooo sarcastic but if you can get by that then you will be fine. If you don't get an A it's your fault in this class!!!

I am horrible at math but somehow have done great in this class! Dr. Faine is a great teacher, you get to take tests as many times as you wish. He is really funny so class isnt a bore, and he is always willing to help. I couldn't imagine taking this class with any other teacher and passing, I would definatly take him if he is available I know he usually fills up early.

Faine has been my favorite teacher thus far in my career at WKU. He is very willing to work with students in order to help them achieve a good grade in his class. The course consisted of only 3 exams, completely multiple choice. For every exam taken we covered 4 chapters, with a blackboard quiz for each chapter. He based grades on only the top 3 quizzes from each section, dropping the lowest grade entirely. The class was relatively easy as long as you made an honest effort to read the text and came to class to hear his lectures. Unlike most professors, he used a lot of anecdotes and stories from his personal experience to keep students interested in the topics. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to take a class that is not only fun, but also somewhat challenging.

One of the most boring classes I've ever taken. I had to drag myself to this class. And God only knows how I scraped by with a B. Seriously, I surprised myself on that one. Dr. Faine is great and all.... he just makes it so boring! It's required for the Crim. minor and I don't know if any other professor teaches it, but either way, I didn't like the class. He may be changing his teaching style too b/c in fall 2007 they are getting a new textbook. Just a heads up, in case the class gets any better after that.

Statistics is a course that nearly everyone dreads. Dr. Faine makes it easier to understand than what you first fear. I'm not saying the class was easy, but he does know his stuff and he teaches it well. You do have to take Dr. Faine with a grain of salt, he puts off the air of being a chauvanistic pig, which he is to some extent, but he is also willing to listen to anyone's opinion, not saying that you will change his, but he will listen, even if it is just to bitch at him about something (I know from experience). The only bad thing about Faine's class are his tests, they are almost all multiple choice (YUCK for any kind of math) and sometimes are confusing in his wording. If you show up for class and do the homework you should be able to pass the class easily. There is no book to buy for this class there is only a disk that you purchase from the Sociology office and it is $1.

Faine is a trip. I don't really like him but the course was pretty easy if you did the reading. One thing I found really annoying about him is he tends to talk to the class during exams. That was frustrating because THEY'RE SO LONG! They usually had 85 questions on them but luckily it was only multiple choice. This way if you missed quite a bunch you still got a pretty good grade. Just do the reading, use the book companion website he gives you for practice and take all the quizzes. The companion website really helped me.

I will simply say BEWARE! This guy gets by teaching at a level unequal to all students. soc dept. needs to let this guy go, the degree is fine til faine. go with musalia! This guy would laugh at anyone who needed help outside of class. The so called "grad" students were'nt much better with 5 computer exercizes. Easily the most cynical, sarcastic, exuse for a professor I have witnessed my entire 4 years at WKU. Also test material was always different from our notes, no book to refer to either. only serious math students will pass

I agree with the other sad faces on here-Faine is NOT a good instructor, a "nice guy," or funny. He is an asshole, sent straight from hell. He picks on people in class, literally telling them they are stupid and are never going to understand anything. He goes WAY too fast and no one ever stops him for fear of being called out in class and told they are worthless. Don't take this class with him or any other class. I promise you, if you have a heart you will regret it.

I took this class during the winter term. I suggest that if you take him, you choose the 3 week class. It's a lot of material to learn at one time, but you go over it everyday to prepare you for the tests on friday. There are 10 quizzes and 3 tests. He is a smart ass, but if you can't dish it back out or laugh with him you probably won't like him.

Class is a bit fast-paced. Dr. Faine is entertaining and easy to talk with outside of class. I really like him even though I think his lectures can be hard to follow sometimes and he gets side-tracked onto different subjects every now and then. I didn't not have the math pre-requisites prior to taking this class and still was able to get an "A" partially b/c he rewards attendance and effort by having an attendance grade built into the points system. He did offer an extra credit quiz (all or nothing type of thing) for 10 pts. Overall, I would recommend taking him for this class.

Dr. Faine can come off as being a little rude and he is often sarcastic but he is an effective teacher. If you read evaluations of this class that degrade him and say that the class is impossible it's because the author of the evaluation expected to sleep through class everyday. You have to go to class (not because it's mandatory, but because you can't fall behind) everyday and you should keep semi-organized notes. If you make it to class and pay attention, there's no reason you shouldn't pass with at least a B.

Don't let my A fool you. I worked hard to get it. The material, if you study, take 'good' notes, and do all the homework is not bad. You also don't have to buy a 'textbook'. It's like a little pamplet that costs like 5 dollars. But you either know the information, or you don't. I mean it's statistics, it's a difficult course, so if you don't absolutely HAVE to take it, stay away! Oh, and go to class every single day unless you're dying.
My main problem was w/ Mr. Faine. He is the biggest jerk I've ever come in contact w/. He's extremely smug and rude. Some people say they liked him, and his sarcasmic ways...but I found him very cruel, cold-hearted, and cynical. Just my opinion, you can be the judge for yourself. But I feel there's waaaayyyy to many smiley faces describing him, considering I hardly ever saw him crack a smile.

Faine's a funny guy, but take this class after you've had a nap. He rambles on and gets off topic several times during the lecture. There are three exams of all multiple choice and then you have an option of taking blackboard quizzes on extra chapters, doing a group project, or writing a research paper. Overall a good class, and Faine has a great sense of humor, but like I said, if you are impatient and get tired easily, look elsewhere. Other than that, just make sure you read and pay attention to the important things hidden behind the BS he rambles on and on about in class.

Dr. Faine uses powerpoint to lecture, which is helpful, and we also watched videos. The tests are pretty hard, you must study, but as long as you attend class and study some you will be fine. Dr. Faine is also a great Stats teacher.

I learned a lot from this class, and it's interesting enough, but Dr. Fanie draged out many of the subjects. He told many stories that were irrelevent and not went off on tangents. They are entertaining in of themselves, but drag class on. He will also keep you the three full hours if you take the three hr. class. Overall, the class isn't bad, and it's not the end of the world if you have to take Dr. Faine.
