Dr. Conte is a nice guy, but he has an extreme difficulty explaining the material to his students. Many times during lecture he would mess up problems, get side-tracked, or just go back to chemistry I material. He would only do one problem in class as an example, but would assign many different variations from that problem for homework. This wouldn't be a problem, but titrations and buffers are very similar entities and it's extremely easy to confuse the two, which many people bombed that exam due to his lack of lecturing skills.
The logistics of the class: There are 5 exams, with a total of 75 points on each one, he grades the exam out of 70 though (yay for 5 points of extra credit). Additionally there is a final exam that is cumulative over chemistry I and chemistry II material. It isn't too hard, but you need to study for it regardless. Get the ACS book!
Overall, if you have to choose between him and Dahl...I would choose Dahl.
Read the textbook if you every get lost, it really makes up for the lack of preparation and lecturing ability of Dr. Conte.

Dr. Conte is the best teacher to take for Quant. He makes his lecture fairly easy b/c of the difficulty of the labs. Test and Quizes are takin word for word from homework. The labs for quant are killer! I spent about 8-9 hours a week in the lab, including the designated time we had. The final is ACS. What really sucks is that he does not offer extra credit of any sort. Your lowest exam grade can be replaced if you do well on the final. Take Dr. Conte. He is always willing to help!

I worked very hard in this class to keep an A (97%). I spent hours upon hours outside of class doing extra work. The final was worth 200 points. After the final, which was in a totally different format than the other 3 test (more theory based rather than problem solving like we had worked in class/previous tests), I had a C!!! Dr. conte said it didn't matter I had a high A the whole semester and to retake it if I wanted a better grade!! =(

This instructor sets a good classroom atmosphere (he jokes around a lot), but he is definitely not the best teacher. I am an A/B student, but I received a D in this class. The material on homework, quizzes, and exams is completely irrelevant to what is learned in class. I always sent emails and made sure I went to him if I had questions, but to no avail. He is not approachable. He does not offer extra credit work or even extra credit on homework, quizzes, or exams. So, if you struggle even a little bit, you probably will not pass this class.

Dr. Conte is a great professor. The class is really difficult but it wasn't because of him, it was just a hard subject. He loves to help out if you have any questions outside of class. He is definitely one of my favorite professors at WKU because of how genuine he was. Make sure and try your hardest in the lab because it is about 40% of your grade and will raise your grade if you do well. The tests are difficult but WRITE SOMETHING down for each problem because he is great about partial credit.

Dr. Conte is awesome. This class is considered to be something of a weeder, so keep that in mind, but in all honesty you can and will make an A IF you are willing to log some serious time studying. It moves REALLY fast, so you need to do the practice and spend time looking over things. He gives you suggested homework and I highly recommend you do it. I'm serious: DO THE HOMEWORK IN THE BOOK IF YOU WANT AN A. He is EXTREMELY approachable and it's kind of cute how excited he gets when you come in with questions. He likes to make odd references to alcohol to relate to his students, and it's actually pretty funny. He doesn't make his own tests, which I think is a bit of a problem, but he does make the 5 or so problem solving type problems. He'll give out old exams and they are VERY similar to the one you'll get so look it over and go to the after-class review session if you don't know how to work them all because he's more than happy to explain.
P.S. Don't stress too much about the final. It's cake after you tough through the rest of the semester, but do make sure you remember how to do EVERYTHING.

He uses powerpoint for his lectures. It will be an ok class if you study and put time into the class. I worked for my B, it's not the easiest class I have ever taken but I did learn a lot! He is a very nice guy that will help you outside of class! Great guy!

Dr. Conte is one of my favorite profs. He tries to make the class as fun as possible but you end up hating it after a while. The problems you do in class are nothing like what you will have to do on the tests, they are a lot more difficult. Do as best as you can in the lab because it will save your grade. Your required to do a homework notebook which is a lot of problems you do over the semester from the book. Buy the solutions manual because you will be unable to do over half of the problems if you don't. The solutions manual sucks for this class because it doesn't really explain how to do the problem but just shows the calculations but not where it gets the numbers from.
Don't wait until the last minute to do you lab notebook like I did because it takes forever to finish it. The final is ACS and there is no good way to study for it. He'll say to study the homework but it really doesn't help. The final is not that hard, at least the one we took it. He grades it on a curve anyways, and it is worth 20%.
This class is not that bad but the tests are very difficult. I take Conte over Dahl though because his tests are near impossible.

do not be fooled by the 100-level number; this class is difficult. the material gets progressively harder throughout the class. the tests are tough and you will have to study quite a bit. the good news is that if you study and know the material well, you should be ok. dr. conte is a super nice guy and will help you if you ask. pay attention and go to class. if you put in a good effort you will get a good grade.

i was very dissapointed with dr. conte. i felt he was not trying to teach, but trying to impress us with his vast knowledge of chemistry. his tests that he posts in the library and says are like the real tests, are a FAKE. he doesn't even make his tests. he uses the ones from his textbook. he really made me feel stupid. even after talking to him about it, i decided to drop the class because i felt i could receive no help from dr. conte. i would strongly recommend that you take someone else for this class, or avoid it all together.

Dr. Conte teached by working problem after problem, this works for me, but some people hate it. He gives you a guide before the exams and they are very helpful. In fact the 5 problems to work out are the same as he puts on the guide.
He is VERY approachable, and very easy to talk to.
A lot of people dont' pass his class, frankly, its because they aren't willing to put in the work. He has a lot of outside class assignments, but they help immensely.
I highly recommend Dr. Conte.

I didn't care for this prof too much. I found myself being mad at him a bunch. He has old exams in the library, but they are nothing like the real exams. I don't even like his exams because he doesn't make them. They are like the ones that textbook manufacturers make and you know those are going to be hard. He does give you topics to go over before the exam, but they didn't help a whole lot. He's got a pretty good personality, meaning that he jokes around some in class. Not the best, and not the worst is a good way to put it.

dr. conte was very helpful in teaching us chemistry. he is more helpful outside of class than in class, however. on his syllabus it says that the class requires spending roughly 2 hours a day on it to keep up and stay on pace. this is very true.......this class will take a considerable amount of time and effort. the extra credit pop quizzes are very helpful, and can certainly pull you up to the next letter grade. the tests are very difficult, so plan on making up for the points you lose on them on the quizzes. overall, i feel like i learned alot of chemistry from this class and would recommend conte to others.
