About the professor:

Molly Dunkum is possibly one of the greatest math teachers I have ever had in my entire life. Not only is she the shining star of the pitiful math department at WKU, she is a shining star in the realm of higher education. Dr. Dunkum is not a professor, she is a real person with a real personality. While most math professors act as if they are mechanically motivated to teach, Dr. Dunkum adds personality, wit, style, and an addictive brand of humor to the course. This lady had the entire class constantly laughing and enjoying themselves as she presented the complicated math material. In all honesty, it felt like you were not learning from a professor, but from another student who happened to be teaching the class. Dr. Dunkum is one of us; she is on the side of the students and it shows. All students love her, and you will too. Molly is an incredible individual!

She is always available for office hours (I visited her about three times during the semester) and will respond to an e-mail within 10 minutes of sending out a question. She goes out of her way to help students!

Her class is not filled with fun and games. She does teach and does have high expectations for students. She covers a section per class meeting, and gives at least one to two quizzes per week. She does not give study guides out for her exams either. Her exams come straight from the homework, but she does require that you know mathematic definitions, theorems, and proofs. Problem solving is highly emphasized, but upper level mathematics is required from this course. Quizzes are 20% of the course and exams (3 plus a final) count as the other 80%.

About the course:

Linear Algebra has no calculus. You will specifically cover content regarding how to work with matrices in order to solve problems. You will cover vector spaces, subspaces, matrix algebra, determinants, inverse matrices, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and linear transformations. The material is very abstract, but the math is nothing compared to Calculus II, Multivariable Calculus, and Differential Equations. It is a refreshing class and a very enjoyable one. The proofs are not too difficult and the textbook used for the course is exceptional.

I would recommend taking the course and this professor. She is an AMERICAN woman who will show you what it is like to be an effective teacher.
