If there is one thing that can be said about Mr. Stokes other than the fact that he is old and teaches like it..... (been at WKU since 1962) it is how boring the material is. I knew going in that the class wasn't going to be fun but if you stay the course and copy down the practice tests and study them (four before final) you should do ok.
I am a mediocre math student (why I was in the class) but for the most part this class wasn't to bad as long as you put up with the daily homework on the computer, weekly quizzes, and monthly exams.
Stokes himself is extremly boring and though he knows the material well if your not careful you may find your mind wanders from his boring teaching style (notes.....notes.....notes!) and the way he speaks.
If you have to take this class I would recommend another teacher if you are easily bored and distracted otherwise Stokes is the way to go.

I have never received lower than a "B" in an math class, and in his class i managed to leave with a "C". He does not do a good of explaining things, you basically have to teach yourself! If you have the chance to take math with another teacher...do it!

Dr. Stokes was a great teacher for Calculus 1. His notes are seemingly simple. He gave an incentive of missing 4 days or less your lowest test score was replaced with your highest, not including the final. The final was a bit more difficult but no review sheet was given. I had him for Stats also and his review sheets he goes over everything and they are practically the exam.

I do not like this teacher!!!!! His test were very unfair. All test come with a study guide. The first two test are exact copies of the study giude only different questions. You would think the third test would be the same way but its not. He puts stuff on there that was not even discussed in class. I would advise you to take someone else if you have a chance, if you don't have a chance.....Good Luck :)

I love Dr. Stokes' class. It was very easy for me. If you are pretty good at math take him! If you don't understand something he will explain it until you do. He also goes over any homework problems that you have trouble with. If you miss less than 3 days, he will make your lowest exam score the same as your highest exam score. He also drops your lowest quiz score. But be prepaired for quizes. He gives at least one every 2 weeks. This is a great class. I recommend taking Stokes for anything.

this guy is really old and teaches like it. if you can stay awake during this class your lucky it put me to sleep every time. whenever a lot of people were missing in the class he always gave a quiz and it was always over something we went over a few weeks before so you could easily mess up on it because youve forgotten what was gone over that long ago.
if you like monotone boredom take this guy.

First of all, attendance isn't mandatory, but it would do you good to go and not miss more than....6 days I think it is, because he will take your lowest test grade and replace it with your highest...it meant the different between an A and a B for me. Also, his exams-extremely easy, all you have to do is know the study guide he gives you. BUT the final exam is much harder.

Mr. Stokes usually explained 2 or 3 problems from each section. What I didn't like about him was his grading technique. If you have a high B, he rounds down instead of up. Keep all of your test because you need to study these for your final which covers everything. If you miss less than four days he will drop two of you lowest quiz grades. You will have one quiz each week so you must know the material. Overall, this is an ok class.

Dr. Stokes is a really nice guy and tells about when he was in college before calculators were invented. The class starts out kind of hard bc you do two sections a day in the review section but if you can get through that (go to the math lab.. it helped me a lot) it gets much easier. You have hwk every class period but it helps in the long run..only down side really. You have 3 tests and a final. He gives you a pre-test that is just like the real test just with diff. numbers before each test. That helps a lot! If you have no more than 4 absences then he will replace your lowest test score with your highest. I would recommend taking him if you have to take math 3 days a week instead of 5. Also, there is a quiz each week, usually on wednesdays, over the hwk for the week. He will drop the lowest two quiz grades (we had 10 quizzes total).

Dr. Stokes is quite possible the best math teacher I've had. Not because of his teaching, but because of his policies. He believes in releasing his test from the semester before, and then his new test is exactly the same test with different numbers. I never did any of the homework once, and only worked the practice tests the night before the test, and I got an A. If you are the type that can teach yourself material the is the class for you. Also his rules about attendance are awesome. He will no count off your grade no how many days you miss. However if you miss 4 or less days he will drop your lowest test AND REPLACE IT WITH YOUR HIGHEST SCORE. There is no reason not to do well in this class because he works out the practice exams, and the real ones are practically the exact same thing. The textbook is recommended but I wish I hadn't bought it because I never opened it.

Dr. Stokes gives you test questions to work on before an exam...and the questions end up being in the exact same order on the exam-just different numbers so that it isn't exactly the same. So, if you know how to do the practice test, you can do the exam. If you miss 4 days or less, he'll replace your lowest exam grade with the highest too.

Some college classes are conducted as you would expect college classes to be. Some are more like high school. Dr. Stokes's class is similar to 2nd Grade. This man takes roll every day, and if class attendance is poor, its pop quiz time. On top of that, he cant teach. He's too old. He just doesn't have a grasp. He's a really nice man. And his tests are pretty easy. So if you already know the stuff, take this class. I recommend it. But if you dont know algrebra or trig, find another teacher.

Dr. Stokes is a very sweet man. He will work any problem on the board in class that you ask him to. He is always willing to help. He takes attendence but it's not necessarily mandatory. You might want to attend class though because he does tend to give pop quizzes that are worth 20 points each. He gives sample tests before each exam that are really helpful. He really cares about what he does.

Stokes is a good teacher, but he can be senile at times. He goes off on random tangents about his past and sometimes he gets lost in the middle of problems. He does know his calculus though. If you've had previous calculus experience you'll do fine, but if you've never had any previous experience take Brantley. She's harder, but teaches better.

Dr. Stokes knows what he is talking about and is a very smart man, he just doesn't know how to teach the class. He does however give out a preview of the test a few days before. If you have never had calculus before don't take him and expect to understand what he is talking about.

Dr. Stokes is a very good teacher for this course. He has written a textbook in the area and he clearly knows the material very well. He is helpful in answering questions. He gives sample tets that are nearly identical to the actual tests.

Dr Stokes really knows his stuff when it comes to calculus. Some times a little to much but he never goes so far over your head that you cannot understand it with a little reasoning. He gives a review sheet for each test that is basically the test and goes over it the day before the test. real open to questions and tells some pretty funny stories sometimes.
