DO NOT TAKE HER FOR THIS CLASS. There are a number of problems with her teaching style of this class. First of all, good luck hearing her if you're not in the front row. She might start off speaking at a tone you can hear in the back, but eventually will drawl off into mutters that not only don't make sense, but that you can't hear either way. She NEVER goes over the material that will be on the tests. She will spend hours in class talking about a writers biography and critiques, but will not talk about the actual works you're supposed to read. She will choose favorites in class, and speak often to only them, sometimes about things that have nothing to do with the class. Her requirements are not always achievable, if you commute expect a bad grade when you can't make it to mandatory readings late at night on campus. The most I ever learned from this class, the most engaged I've ever been, was when we had a substitute. I've never had her in another class, but I can attest that her Am Lit survey is terrible.

Do not believe the negative rumors about Professor Miller. She is so much fun to have in class. There is a lot of out-of-class reading but most of it is relatively interesting and the class is very discussion based. Her tests are easy if you study for them. She's an absolutely amazing teacher and you will learn a lot in this course.

Old lady. Sarcastic teacher. Don't get on her bad side. Attendance is mandatory! Will except excused absences though. (Make sure to say you were really sick). Pretty easy class except exam over drama section was pretty hard. Final= essay. Overall not a bad teacher.

Prof. Miller is a very sweet, old lady, but cannot stay on topic for anything. It was a very easy class for me, but she would talk about the exact same thing for three class periods which got quite annoying. She would expect us to attend class, then talk to us for ten minutes (about things she had covered before) and let us go. This class was a waste of my time. I really like Prof. Miller, but do not think I could stand taking another class with her without going insane.

I didn't really mind this course. The tests weren't bad at all as long as you pay attention in class and take notes. I would just skim my notes night before the test, I got an A on all of them. But, she is slightly anal on the paper assignments. She'll let you correct one paper to raise your grade. However, sometimes she'll ramble on about things irrelevant. I know i didn't mind this class, but I know MANY surrounding classmates didn't like her. All you have to do is LISTEN, pay attention, and do what she says, and you'll be fine.

This course was challenging but I definitely feel like I learned a lot. Professor Miller is very knowledgeable and she can be a bit intimidating at first. She has a unique sense of humor and I was often amused by her. You should definitely stay after class and talk to her if you have any questions/concerns. If class ends early and you have time stay around to chat a bit, it helps you get to know your teachers. Make sure you know the difference between the words "simple" and "simplistic" when writing, trust me on this one =)

Prof Miller is very biased against students she does not like. She is a feminist and does not like girly girls. You have to read all your poems/story/play aloud in class. Her tests are essay and a few multiple choice. She often makes rude comments on papers, and will fail you if you miss more than three times. She doesn't care why you are absent and she isn't very willing to help. I have never received below a B in any class....until hers that is!!!

Mary E. Miller is the most confusing and most boring teacher that I've had while attending Western. She's hard to pay attention to because her notes are so scattered. Sometimes, she'll drone on and on about figures that don't even matter in English, like some famous writer's crazy sister. She will confuse you with her instructions. You will learn nothing and be miserable. Some of her assignments are just outright unreasonable. If you're looking to learn or get any easy grade, don't take Miller. It's not worth the trouble. Take anyone else.

I'll state this blatantly: Dr. Miller is NOT an easy A. She's not even an easy professor. This class has mandatory attendance at several events throughout the semester and mandatory classroom participation. It's a workshop-style class, so you'll be helping a group of 2-4 other students with their work on a personal basis and giving opinions on the works of every single student in the class. IF you ignore this part of the class and stay silent, your grade will suffer. Additionally, Dr. Miller doesn't grade easy. If you deserve a bad grade, you'll get one. If you're continually late, are obviously not trying, or just suck as a student in general, she'll be sure to let you know. However, she's a great teacher -- if you listen, you'll learn, so just be a good student and you'll profit from her classes.

Prof. Miller is an interesting teacher, all of the class period is just her lecturing/going off on random subjects. She has a very odd sense of humor and likes to pick on random students. The final is difficult because it is cumulative and she does not review much at all. You do not get to keep any of your tests or quizzes so you have to study off your notes. If you miss class it is difficult to get good notes from others, it is very hard sometimes to understand what she is talking about. She does give quite a bit of extra credit but it is hard to attend the extra credit opportunites often because they are at night. You have to study for her tests and read EVERYTHING she tells you to. Make sure you pay attention in class and stay on top of everything.

Dr. Miller is a crazy woman and she's got a great personality. Sometimes her constructive criticism isn't as helpful as one would like, but overall i appreciated the help she offered while we were writng.
The poetry was a little over kill but it wasn't bad and she's got a very open mind. Her sarcasm adds a little spice to the class and fair warning- she doesn't see anything wrong with arguing with someone...and she usually wins. It's all good though- I recommend her.
Oh, one more thing...You'll get tired of hearing the words "prosey" and "trite", among many others.

There is no real textbook for this class. But you read a lot of stories and books. There is so much reading for this class. You have to read short stories, poems, then novels. We read Moby Dick, The Scarlet Letter, Daisy Miller, and Huckleberry Finn. This was frustrating. Her final is not really cumulative, but she does throw some questions in from previous material. You write a few papers, and some analyzing. She really is a sweet old lady, but her class was hard.

This class is in no way hard at all. There are certain events you have to attend in order to receive credit and there are like 3 exams and they're all t/f and matching. The reasons I gave her an "ok" rating is because she makes you feel dumb as hell sometimes! You ask her a question and she looks as if you are the dumbest person on the earth! And she likes to be sarcastic at times and it gets kind of annoying. So if you're going to take Creative Writing, take her if you dare! She's not bad she just has her moments.

Prof. Miller is not your average teacher. There is no room for opinions opposite from hers in the classroom. The class has absolutely nothing to do with women or the study of women. Her expectations are unclear on everything; her criteria for an A changes from day to day. She is an English teacher and unnecessarily weaves grammar into her teaching. As long as you can handle liberal, self-righteous beliefs, you should be fine. The tests are all essay and nearly impossible to study for. If I had the choice to take this class again, I wouldn't.

I loved this class! Miller is one of those professors who will not let you get by with anything less than your best effort. if she gives you a bad grade on a writing assignment, she won't just hand it to you and say "too bad." she really wants to get involved with you as a writer and will often ask you to meet with her outside class time. i really appreciated this sort of help. I HIGHLY recommend her and this course!

Professor Miller went beyond my expectations. I expected her to be a stuffy, uptight professor, but she is just the opposite. She has a great sense of humor and for an honors class, it was easy. 3 units: poetry, short stories, drama. Tests have some multiple choice, t/f, and an essay. There are usually several options to choose from for the essay. A paper for each unit, with a few essays sprinkled in. If the class does bad, she'll allow you to revise them and get a few extra points. This class was hard to get to at 8 am, but her humor made it bearable. She'll work with you if you have conflicts or if you miss a class. Good professor!

Ms. Miller is a fun teacher. She is very laid-back, and she likes making jokes on occasion. As far as the class, there are manditory events you have to go to...usuall poetry or fiction readings, no book is needed, and the final is turning in a final manuscript with poems, a short story, and a one-act play. Attendance DOES affect your grade, and if she doesn't like your writing she'll tell you. Overall, I enjoyed the class.

Mary Miller is a very good teacher. She did not require a textbook for our class so we had to find the poems and short stories on our own. This was not very fun. The class is good and not too difficult. You have to write a lengthy paper for each of the three sections of the class.

She's obsessed with authors not on the reading lists and she expects you to know everything already (what would be the point of the class if we did?) She never gets around to getting any material covered. It takes her forever to cover anything and as far as getting help on your writing, forget it. When you get your papers back, you just get harsh comments, no suggestions for improvement or strong points. Avoid her like the plague!

Mary Ellen Miller is pretty cool. Her and I conflicted some when it came to my writing style. It seemed like everything I turned in for the first 6 weeks she chewed up and spit back out in my lap, but ultimately she helped me become a better writer. You sit in class and talk every single day. You read things in class, you talk about them, you help other people with their pieces of work. It's very interactive and by the end of the semester we were all great friends. There are required "special events" that you have to go to. Mostly poetry readings on campus. The only problem is that when you have to work and can't go, you have to write a paper to get the credit. But overall I liked this class. It taught me that I don't want to be a writer, but I still learned alot.

Prof. Miller makes everything interesting; she readily discusses topics related to class readings and encourages critical thinking. She is very humorous with a passion for life. At first, I wasn't sure how to take her humor and sarcasm (no negative connotation--it's all good), but eventually you learn to laugh with her and crack jokes back. Her tests are easy and straight-forward. She grades papers toughly but fairly. You're expected to attend several outside-of-class functions. I'd take her again.

Professor Miller has a delightful personality and gets to know you personally, especially in a small classroom setting. She makes you think about the underlying themes and issues in the literature that you read, which has practical every-day applications as well. I highly recommend her for any English course because of her personality, teaching methods, and availability.

Ms. Miller is an extremely biased teacher. She does not judge the students based on the quality/skill of their writing. Instead, she gives the students she likes good grades, the others recieve Cs and Ds. I had a B+ average on my tests and had done every assignment in the course. However, I recieved a C at the end of the semester. Meanwhile, I recieved an A in 'Advanced Composition 401'. It seems odd to me that I can get an A in an advanced writing course, yet recieve a C in Ms. Millers beginning writing class.
Also, Ms Miller gives very little feedback. Every remark she makes is a sarcastic, snide comment. She did not help me improve my writing in the least bit. If the paper isn't to her liking, don't expect a good grade.
I would not recommend taking Ms Millers class. Unless you want to kiss her @$$ to recieve an A. Find another teacher for Creative Writing.

Ms. Miller is different from every other "writing" teacher I have.
She has a very open mind and isn't taken aback when she hears the F word or other curse words in writing. She is a fun, sarcastic old lady that is in touch w/today's writing and not stuck in a time warp where the only acceptable curse words were "golly" and "fiddlesticks". The only problem I had w/this course was the amount of time it spent focusing on poetry, but she is also a poetry teacher so naturally she would spend more time focusing on that area of writing.
DO NOT TAKE DAVID LENOIR! I had the guy last year and he was just a pacifist and an asshole. He never gave any constructive criticism and would tell somebody that what they wrote was good just so they wouldn't feel bad.
If you're serious about writing and improving your writing then Mary Miller is the ideal professor. There are a few tests but they are absolutely simple and require no study time. They take about 10 minutes to complete and then you can leave class.

You can read Cliff Notes for every single novel, because she doesn't test on plot details... she tests on the silly little things that she brings up in class that seem insignificant. Her grading is totally arbitrary, you will have NO idea what your grade is until it's posted on TopNet. Hint: write your paper on one of the topics she suggests- that's really what she wants to read anyway. Make sure you come to class having read what you're supposed to (or the cliff notes) because she'll dock points if you don't participate. She's extremely unorganized and doesn't ever return papers when she says she will. She seems to care very little about the students... seems like she's just putting in her time until retirement.

Professor Miller is very knowledgabe about literature. Her tests are very hard, and I had to study my butt off to get an A. You will learn a lot from this class if you apply yourself. I am glad I took this class. My only problem with her is that she seems to forget that she has been teaching this class for years, and the students are new and do not know what she is talking about immediately.
