I should have received an A but the final killed my grade. The final test and final paper are EACH 25% of your grade which means the ridiculous amount of homework you do isn't worth much at all. The reading is ridiculous. I have never, in my life, had so much reading and I'm graduating this semester. The man hates adjectives and expects your paper to be as dry as the Sahara desert (though I wouldn't be able to say that to him because he hates metaphor too). His final is ridiculous and is why I got a C instead of an A. Unless you have a photographic memory you aren't doing well on his final. He wants you to remember lines from a poem you spent less than twenty minutes on and cares more that you remember specific names and dates than that you actually understood the poems and novels. It's much more a poorly structured history class than a literature class.

This class is pretty easy for the most part. Davies wants you to write papers for his class HIS way. It seems like he gives you an ungodly amount of guidelines to follow and it can seem overwhelming at first but if you just follow the guidelines he gives you on the syllabus for papers you will do fine. I am terrible at writing and grammar and I am doing pretty well in this class. I think I will get a B which is reallllllly good for me because I cant write a paper to save my life. He lets you out early a lot towards the end and his lecture is pretty short. You have to write a lot of one page papers but they are only one page so its not bad. I would recommend him.

I really enjoyed Dr. Davies, but his criteria for the papers are so demanding. He asks and expects a lot of them. I advise you not to take this class unless you are a really good analytical writer.

Dr. Davies is a wonderful professor who really cares of teaching and literature. He really takes the initiative to make sure his students really grasp what he is trying to teach. I loved the books and poems we were assigned to read and felt like I learned a lot.
His tests (there is a midterm and a final) are somewhat tough because he is pretty specific about the answers and requires you to remember author/titles/definitions. Take good notes (basically write down everything that man says!) and don't be afraid to ask questions if you are confused. You are also required to analyze poems and now certain poetic terms, so listen carefully to that! You also have to write several one-page paper over related class topics and one 5-6 page paper at the end of the course.
Overall, if you really want to learn something and don't mind putting in a little effort, take Dr. Davies!

Dr. Davies is a great teacher. He cares more about group disccussion and learning than grades. He uses letter grade only and tries to tell you exactly how you went wrong and/or what you did right. Before an assignment he will tell you exactly how he wants something written. He allows unlimited extra credit, it the form of poetry memorization and recitation. He likes one page precise, well written papers. For this class, we wrote several of those and only one larger paper. I've taken him for multiple classes and wil continue to take his classes. While he always assigns a textbook, you can generally find the texts either online or buy them used. He doesn't care if you have his book or a later edition, as long as you have a copy to read. I've saved a ton by buying past editions of the same book and supplementing texts that aren't there.

Probably my favorite teacher I've ever had. I used to hate English but now I love it. There is a lot of reading in this class but its not hard and the papers are easy as long as you read the books. He loves to hear your thoughts about book, poems, ideas, etc. so speak up!!

I took Lloyd Davis ENG 300 class and it was PAIN IN THE ASS!!! Do not ever take his class. He does not grade fair and also he doesn't care about anything in that class.
I wrote my response paper 4 times and he still didn't accept it because it wasn't looking like the way he wanted, that is BS. He accepted all but he didn't accept the last response? I mean COME ON!
Trust me, ask in campus if you want to, he really is pain in the ass.

Dr. Davies is not a good teacher for you if your one who hates anything to do with English. He grades using only letter grades so you never know what you got in the class overall. Papers are a nightmare and he never tells you what he wants on them untill he's graded them and gave them back. Over all don't take him unless you want to be stressed out all the time.

First, Dr. Davies is such a great guy. He is super nice and tries to help in any way he can. You have 3 papers, two of which must be research, and if you don't do so well on them, he lets you redo to help your grade. He says that this is a learning experience and he is here to help you learn! (Which in my opinion is what the other teachers should be doing...but anyway....). The midterm and final are in two parts. The first being fill in the blank and the second being essay. Basically, you should know about the authors and the themes and time periods.
Lastly, I was retaking this class, and although I got a better grade than before, I still didn't get as high as I would have liked. For the most part, English lit does not interest me at all!! I hate it! It was so hard for me to pay attention in class.
If you have to take this class, make it at a time that you can concentrate!! Out of the three British lit teachers that I have had, he is the nicest, most helpful one. Unfortunately, none of the classes interested me!

Prof. Davies is a very nice and very intellegent man. Although, he is very difficult to understand in class. He tries to get the message across, but when a question is asked in class, he does everything but answer it. I will not ever take him again for any class. He isn't clear on what he wants out of an assigned paper. I've always had A papers in every other class at Western. I recieved C's on his papers, along with over half of the people in my class. He is very nice, but not so great at getting the message across. If I had to choose, I would pick someone else. If you take his class, good luck!

Professor Davies is a very good teacher. This course may not show his best aspects since it covers a broad range of material, but I enjoyed the class. Moderate reading load, but not overkill. If you do not study for the exams and do the assigned reading - you will FAIL! Papers were valuable to learning, but could have been spaced together better - last one was too close to finals. Overall, I enjoyed this class.

Professor Davies demands a lot from his students, but doesn't say specifically what he wants. The first few papers we turned in, I received Ds and Cs on everything! By the end of the semester, he started to be less anal and I finally got an A on a paper! I don't recommend this teacher unless you are a genius at English and can deal with lots of critcism and bad grades. This class was boring, but I learned to deal and didn't drop it, even though I considered it many times.

This is the the worst english teacher I have ever had. English has always been one of my best subjects but this teacher made me hate it. He confuses himself in discussion and contradicts what the book he gives us says. His grading technique is rediculous and so is he. You can't even go talk to him if you have a problem, he doesnt help. If you can take any other teacher for this class, it would be very beneficial to yourself.

Davies is a really nice guy and he knows his stuff. He seems like the type of guy you would see on a park bench writing poetry about the beautiful day. His class is not too hard if you pay attention, take notes, and can write papers about literature. We watch movies, read poetry, and talk about the books he assigns you to read (and the books are really short and easy to read.) I enjoy going to this class but, sometimes he doesn't explain things throughly and you MUST take notes from his lectures because you will do poorly on the midterm if you don't. So, attendence is important; you don't want to miss a lecture. Overall, I would suggest this teacher for Intro to Lit.

Things Dr. Davies likes:
1. Zionism
2. Intertextuality
3. Sixites / Seventies Rock Music
4. Movies Starring Cher
5. Possibly Surfing?
Though the class was a little chaotic at times, Dr. Davies was a fun and intellegent man that made trekking through so much world literature fun and enlightening, taking various approaches to interpreting the material, some of which were very unconventional.
The work load was fairly light, as there is a one page commentary for each work and two major papers. Dr. Davies is fairly laid back when it comes to bogging people down with assignments, as his real focus is educating his students. It was a fun class, and I certainly look forward to having him again.
Unfortunately, I don't think Dr. Davies teaches this class often, as world lit is not really his main academic focus. But if he ever does, take him.

Especially for an upper level english honors course, this was very enjoyable. Dr. Davies is not obsessed with grading, tests, or evaluations, but discussion and learning. I don't speak in class easily, but it was a comfortable setting with open discussions about 2 books we read. There are no tests and no finals, just a few short papers and a final research paper that you would be required to write in any upper level class. Dr. Davies is very intelligent and compassionate about English, yet very flexible and laid back. I learned from his class, and yet didn't feel weighed down with work. I highly recommend this, even if you are not enrolled in the honors program.

Dr. Davies is a really, really laid-back professor. It seems like he knows his stuff. The class is pretty simply... your grade is based on 3 essays assigned throughout the semester. The final, I'll admit, was a little rough. It consisted of an essay outlining the evolution of British Lit, 2 short answer questions, quote attributions and a few multiple choice questions. We did get pretty behind in the class, and the last couple weeks were a tad overwhelming with all the material packed in such a short time. But, all in all, this was a pretty easy, stress-free course, and I'd recommend Dr. Davies.

Prof. Davies is pretty nice guy that is fairly smart too. But he can't explain things very well at all. He is very vague when it comes to everything. He dosen't aleays stick to the syllabus. He grading is very erratic, he's never clear on anything. We spent about 3 weeks on King Leer and Spent about 1 week on Paradise Lost (our main reading). We then kept falling behind on things and at the end of the semester we were more than 2 weeks behind, so he spent 15 min. of our last class period to go over about 6 readings (none in detail). You can take this class if you wanna, if you are a good writer and already know what is being taugh then you probably will do fine, but if you aren't, you may wanna look elsewhere.

Dr. Davies is a super nice guy. I took him for both British Lit. I and II, so I feel very comfortable in saying this. In the first section, 3 papers were due, along with a mandatory final. The first part of the final was essay, while the second part was primarily identifying quotes and answering short answer questions. In the second class, we had one paper due, a series of 6 essays due at the end of the semester, and a final. He is the easiest British Literature teacher at Western, so take him if you get a chance. He's very helpful and understanding, plus doesn't take attendance.

Davies does not take attendance and only assigns three papers the entire semester. It was an easy course, but he waited until the final two weeks of school to assign two of our papers. That was very nerve-racking. However, most of the material is high school level, so it is not difficult.
