Class is interesting as it can be for a microeconomics class. If you have problems with the class, go to the professor before the class because he will give you an actual study guide as opposed to just the review questions he gives during the review sessions of class. Enjoyed this class as much as i could for being a micro economics class. Take Borland, I could have gotten a better grade if I didn't mess up one of the exams.

Borland is a great professor, I find him really interesting and always keeps my attention. There are only four tests and they are 20 question multiple choice, there is no homework and no quizzes. I think its very hit or miss if you do well or not. pay attention and try and he will notice and help you with any questions you have. Sadly it does not seem like there is a method to the madness.

For me economics is a difficult subject, but Dr. Borland made it so much more interesting. He likes to really try to know his students. He may not know your name but the next semester he will still know your face and stop and ask how you are doing. The textbook isn't required, but reading the chapters helps to clarify some points. He provides a review the day before the test of usually about 10 questions that he talks you through to make sure you understand. These reviews are almost exactly like the test with different numbers or the same question from the review if he asks what if I would have asked this. Only 5 tests that count 20 points each so the class is only worth 100 points but he has a built in curve. You only have to have 85 points for an A when in any other class you usually have to have 90. I would recommend taking Borland again. He will entertain you and teach you so much about economics. Take this class!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Melvin Borland is a boss. He is one of my favorite teachers at WKU. His class can get confusing at times but if you stick with it he explains it until you get it. there are 5 tests with 20 multiple choice questions and thats all! If you dont get a B in this class you either never came to class or you shouldnt be in college. Its a fun class and he will make you laugh from his great analogies. Take this class!

I don't have a clue what everyone else is talking about how great this class was..... it wasn't!!!! This was the WORST CLASS i have ever taken at western!!!
He jumps from topic to topic and makes it extremely hard to keep up with what he's talking about, plus the notes he writes on the board make no sense!!!! They look like chicken scratch and when I asked him to explain something as second time he would either ignore me or tell me to ask sometime sitting next to me to explain it to me, then they would not a clue what he was talking about!!
Besides this, the dude would randomly get off topic and start talking about selling bathtubs, or how good ramen noodles were, then if someone got up to go to the bathroom, he would follow them to it, then come back to class and talk about them using the bathroom..... he was a strange guy....
And besides all of this!! The test were crazy hard! I would study for hours on the test and not get anywhere on the test! I got D's on the first two test and when I asked him to explain how I got something wrong he would tell me "You just did..." and that would be it!!!
After that I dropped the class I couldn't handle it anymore! Because of him I changed my minor, yea he was that bad!!!
AVOID THIS TEACHER!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!

Dr. Borland understands the material and does a great job of making applications with the material. He always tries to make sure everyone understands the material (does not always succeed). He's very casual and very likable. Entire grade is based on 5 twenty question tests, which are roughly constructed but graded liberally. Overall great professor and enjoyable class.

Mr. Borland is a pretty cool teacher. He seems to care about you and refuses to move on until you understand what he is covering. So no matter how stupid the question may seem, ask it anyway. He wants you to get it. The tests can be a pill, but make sure to be there for the review! They help a lot!! There are 5 tests, and each has 20 multiple choice questions. There are no other grades in the class, so they are pretty important. But Borland curves a little, so that helps. Plus, when we reviewed the tests, we often found mistakes, which gave us extra points. Overall, this class is pretty cool. The teacher is awesome and tries to make a rather boring and complicated subject more relate-able. Take the class.

Dr. Borland was an amazing teacher. He truly cares about his students and how they are doing in his class. There are no set tests dates he just gives the tests when he feels the class as a whole is prepared to take one. Hes not one of those teachers who makes you feel stupid when you ask a question either, he is very nice and very helpful. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!!! it is expensive and I didnt open it a single time. Test questions are identical to the ones from notes and from test reviews. so just make sure you are always at test reviews and you will be fine!!

Dr. Borland is a wonderful professor! His sense of humor is hilarious, and he is really nice in general. He will remember you when you see him around campus, which makes you feel like he actually cares about the class. Borland is there to teach you and strives for every student to understand. His tests are 25 multiple choice questions. You have 4 and then the final. They arent too difficult either. I personally took lots of notes to help me understand what he was saying, especially once getting into the graphs. Overall, I would love to take any class with Borland!

He calls on people to answer questions so make sure to be paying attention. Don't buy the textbook and take good notes. The whole class is 5 twenty question multiple choice tests, but he curves grades so that an 85 is an A and a 70 is a B and so on. Not an easy class but I would recommend Dr. Borland.

Dr. Borland is a nice guy, enjoys teaching, and seems to know a lot about economics. I had trouble with his teaching style and understanding some of the concepts. Unfortunately, some of the topics he covers are not in the book. You are better off not buying the book and doing Internet searches on the topics to get additional help. It is extremely important that you go to every class and take notes. I did and still had problems. I finally caught on at the end and did well enough on the last two tests to bring my grade to a low A. It was a lot more work than most of my other business classes.
There were five tests, including the final. Each one has 20 multiple choice questions which means there is no room for a simple mistake. I guess that is why is uses a 15-point range for each letter grade rather than the usual 10-point range. He has a strange way of asking some of the questions. You really need to think them through to be sure you understand what he is asking. He will do a short review before each test. Pay attention to those so you can see how he structures the questions.
In my class he exerted almost no control over the students. There were lots of classes during which people talked most of the time. It was very annoying. He doesn't take attendance beyond the first few classes and he even said no one has to come. I never understood why those people were there.
I don't know what the other economics professors are like, but I would recommend trying someone else.

It is obvious that Borland really loves Economics, and he really cares about his students. However, I just don't feel he is a very good teacher. He tries to make you understand and is CONSTANTLY asking, "Do you understand?" to various individuals. And if any one person says they are confused about something, he was explain it again. But it usually didn't matter how many times he explained something, because he never made it any clearer.
If you take this class, all I can say is GO TO CLASS. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you miss even one day, you could be confused for the next five. There are 4 tests and then a cumulative final. All the tests are 20 multiple choice questions. He curves the tests a bit to where you only have to get 17 right to get an A, but trust me...you need that help. Also, beware the 3rd test! It is tricky. Study extra hard for it!

Tests are so hard that he has to curve them so people will pass.

8/20= D
I studied so hard for his test and on everyone I was around the 12-15 range.

Half of class time was usually spent talking about something other than economics, but I'll give him credit: When he's readay to get back on track, he can relate anything back to econ. He does want you to understand and succeed, but sometimes it's frustrating when he explains something to you over and over because he keeps repeating himself, he doesn't find a new way to explain it if you don't understand it. The class itself is VERY boring unless you happen to get off an a fun subject (which can easily happen.) He calls people out by their shirts. If someone was wearing a Henderson Co. t-shirt, he'd say "Anyone from Henderson Co. should know the answer" so beware of that. Don't buy the book, EVERYTHING comes from the notes. Whatever you do, don't fall behind in the class. Don't wait until the end to figure everything out, because you'll be in big trouble. He doesn't review before the final! I found that EXTREMELY frustrating. We had our final test on Thursday, then had to turn around and take our final on Monday! The good thing is his (5) tests are 20 multiple choice questions. If you're not strong in math/econ, I would suggest another professor.

Let me just say this, Borland is a great teacher. If you like learning about slopes and the curve of a line then this course is for you. I actually learned alot but I hate anything having to do with math or thinking in a different way. There are 5 test worth 20 points each so if you bomb one don't worry about it just do better on the next ones. I bombed the first two but got Bs' on the last three so that brought me up to a C. I wasn't too happy with that C but I passed. Dr. Borland will go over and over and over the material until you get it. If you dont' that's okay, he'll even stay after class with you until you understand. He likes to crack jokes sometimes and trys to intimidate you but don't let that stop you from asking questions, TRUST ME, there alot of people in the class just as confused as you. So ask all the questions you want!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Borland was agood teacher but in the very beginning I was very confused and didn't really follow on anything. And when I tried asking question, I felt embarrassed by him because he can be pretty intimidating. he'll just call on random people and ask if you understand, and if you don't he'll bust you out and make you tell him what you don't understand. I know that is what a professor is suppose to do but at times I felt as if I was the dumbest person in the class so didnt ask too many questions. If I had asked questions in the very beginning I probably could have pulled off a B in the course but instead i waited until the very last minute to crack down and focus and ask question. But overall Dr. Borland is a nice guy and a great professor he'll help you and help you and help you unitl you understand, he doesn't mind explaining things over and over again until you get it. So I'd take him but just make sure you PAY CLOSE ATTENTION and if you don't understand something, please ASK!!!!!

Borland is an extremely nice guy. He is an interesting gentleman and very congenial. He enjoys interacting with the class. He wants you to ask questions and let him know when you don't understand something. He will go over it as often as it takes in order for you to get it. Your book is mostly used as a reference for when you need reinforcement, and you have very few reading assignments, which was a plus for me. He has a review day prior to the test, but watch out--he keeps the reviews, although he lets you copy it.
Borland does not go out of his way to make the class easy for you. He does not have an attendance policy, but it is certainly in your best interest to attend regularly. If you miss a day, you will pay for it later. His tests are twenty questions, multiple choice, and are mostly applied problems, which makes it difficult to study for if you're one of those who likes to memorize definitions and facts. There is no extra credit available. Either you get it or you don't."

After taking this professor, I am shocked that students gave him such good reviews on prof eval. All I can think of is that maybe the ones that reviewed him were all econ majors so of course they did well in the course.
Now, for the rest of you all: DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! The subject matter of econ is abstract enough, but the way he teaches it is almost impossible. Here is the course breakdown:
4 tests, 1 cumulative final
20 multiple choice questions on each test and the final
That is all of your grade! 120 points total!
He seems to care about his students, but doesn't really. He thinks that if the WHOLE class is making C's on his tests except for about 5 students, then it is the majority of the students faults. He gives no homework, no reading assignments, and never has any idea where we are in the book. When told that a lot of the theories he covers in class are not in the book he just kind of laughed. There was no way to gauge whether we understood the material until the tests because there were never any worksheets or anything given out as homework.
The material of Micro econ is not even THAT hard, but with his test formats/wording and general format of the class, it is very difficult!

He doesn't give any extra credit, but he does kind of curve his tests. For example, if you receive a 17/20, he'll allows that to be an "A". Dr. Borland is great. If you don't understand something, he'll explain it over and over and over until you do. The man is a comic genius. Nothing he says is funny, but the way he says things is hilarious.
There aren't a lot of notes, but there are about a million graphs which he'll hand out and go over in class. You won't really need the textbook; half of the material isn't even in it. He reserved some books at the library that cover anything not in the book and you'd be better served to at least skim through them.
The tests can be killer. I didn't do well on the first two, but did well on the third and aced the cumulative final. Lots of problem-solving with one or two brief essay questions. Tests consist of several questions of which you have to answer 5 or so. NEVER answer less than the minimum; if you don't know much about something, write what you know. He gives partial credit based on how much of an understanding you demonstrate on the test.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you miss you'll miss a LOT.
Dr. Borland is a great professor who will do whatever is needed to make sure that you understand the concepts of the course. By all means make use of him. If you don't, then you'll regret it when you take one of his tests.

He's a nice guy and the class isn't tons of work, the tests are just the only grade you receive and are difficult to get a's and b's on.

He's cool. I feel like the other evaluations of him were not fair. If you have two brain cells, you can get a B or better in the class. The tests are pretty easy compared to what he prepares you for, and doesn't make you take pages and pages of notes. He's an overall cool guy, and interested in the actual lives of his students. I definitely recommend him.

A nice guy, but he can be intimidating because he randomly calls upon people in class and sometimes embarasses them if they don't know the answer. Your whole grade comes from 5 tests with 20 questions each. If you bomb a test, you could be in trouble. Nothing comes from the book and there are very few notes. Just a frustrating class.
