Has anyone noticed how several of Judy's positive reveiws say she is "pleasant?" How many college students do you know that use the word "pleasant?" Don't read too much into those green happy faces..it sounds like the same person did half of the positve reviews.
In my personal opinion, she's completely crazy but VERY good at what she does. You decide if it's worth it.

In regards to the series of negative comments Mrs. Woodring has received....those students should grow up. The only reason why you should ever have an issue in this class is because you 1) are lazy, 2) make ridiculous excuses, 3) falsify information, 4) are not prepared on time or 5) are disrespectful. As long as you are honest (you NEVER lie to her, so help you God), you should have a pleasant class experience.
Mrs. Woodring has tremendous school and is extremely dedicated to WKU. She's been here for ever and she is very concerned for her students.
She is very upfront about your behavior. Some people may view that as "sexism" or disrespect or whatever (read the negative reviews), but its honesty. Honesty is the best policy with Mrs. Woodring. She doesn't believe in padding the truth. But she will be compassionate. She's a different type of person, and takes some getting use to. But you'll be fine. Just write your speeches and practice. Don't be worried about the reviews that say decry her grading practices. If you stutter or need to look at notes, she'll help you overcome those crutches and become a real public speaker. You can do it, she can help.

I hated this class for the first section of the course. She gives open note tests over lecture material, but this is more confusing than it seems. She is intimidating and scary at first. The key is to get to know her. When you begin planning your debate, visit her during office hours - she LOVES this. She will take time to look at your arguments and will help you with it. If you send your debate in early when you're supposed to or if you meet with her as you form your arguments, she will give you an A on the debate. Otherwise, you better hope you know what you are doing when it comes to your turn. She will embarrass you if you give her reason to and she will call you out in class. But after the debates start, there is virtually NO work to do aside from completing 2 debates which can be done over a long night in mass media with your competitor if need be. No testing after debates start and they take up about half the semester. If you take this course, be sure to go to class and talk to her every step of the way as you work - you'll have no problem - and you will have fun.

Apart from another professor that Ihad Judy Woodring is one of the worst! She is condescending, rude and sexist...towards women!! She has the biggest chip on her shoulder than anyone could possibly imagine. Unfortunately I have to take this class again because I dropped this but get this I dropped it in Nov and she refused to sign the papers so that I could drop it. After a heated discussion she told me that her and I were not on first name basis and to address her as Mrs.Woodring. I told the deans over my dept and hers that I refuse to take her at all. I would rather drive to the Owensboro campus every other day than to sit in this woman's class and have her dehumanize me.

I don't think Dr. Woodring or her class is near as horrible as some of the students make it out to be on here. She is a pleasant woman and does try to help you out whenever you need it. This is a college course and missing the class will hurt you when it comes to the notes and information you miss. She also expects everyone to be prepared. You do have to work in this class, but again, it is not hard.
I think during the debates, she took for granted that some of us had never debated before, and expected us to know the material. Pay attention, ask questions, but don't be repetitive and ask the same questions repeatedly! She hates that.
Other than that, she does try to help and even offers tons of extra credit. Dr. Woodring gives you the grade you earn. Work hard, pay attention, and you will do fine!

Judy Woodring is snappy and rude except to her "special" students that she randomly chooses. When I teach high school, I will refuse to do the speech team just to avoid ever seeing this lady again. And I'm not even a student she snapped at. If you are forced to take her, good luck.

She is the worst teacher at WKU. All she cares about is the debate team. The work in the class is not hard, but when it is time to give your two debates beware. She grades them tough. Also, she thinks everyone has been in debate sometime in their life, so she does not explain well. But she is the only one who teaches this course, so you really have no choice if you need it for your major. If you don't, please save yourself the heartache.

I really don't know why Dr. Woodring has such a bad rating on this site, because I found her to be a very pleasant woman. I didn't find the course to be as hard as many other people had led me to believe it would be. She offered numerous extra credit opportunities, (really, there were as many opportunities for extra credit as we were willing to take advantage of) and she was always available for outside-of-class help. You'll do better in this course if you select a partner for your debates that you can trust and who will do as much work as you. Also, you must attend class to get a good grade. There were a few class sessions that, if you had missed, you might never recover from it without serious outside help. Don't be afraid to ask her graduate assistants for help, and pick a debate topic that has plenty of material on both the pro and con side. Don't go into the class already stressed out, and you'll do fine. She was a great professor. I would gladly recommend her to anyone.

If you need one class to graduate and this is the class, do not take it, leave school without a degree. This was hands down the worst class I have ever taken at WKU and you could not pay me to take it again. Judy seems cool at first but if you cross her or disagree with her, she will make you pay dearly for it. The class is a waste of time, money, and effort and you don't learn anything. The only way this class becomes worthwhile is if you are a member of the Forensics team, beacuse that is all the class is about, the history of the WKU debate team. This class is for people who want to teach and run a debate team, not for people who want to learn how to argue and debate. Don't take it. Ever. This class is ridiculous, in every sense of the word.

It's not that the course is altogether difficult, it's that Ms. Woodring is an absolute beast. I learned nothing beyond the history of the WKU debate team. She approaches the class with a tremendous chip on her shoulder and, because all the grading is subjective, if you do not appreciate her and show it often, your grade will reflect that. I wish that I had dropped the course, but now my grade, and my 4.0 gpa is at the mercy of this evil woman. She is the reason why I wanted to be a teacher, to help my students where awful teachers have ruined them.

This lady is the offspring of Satin. She has no consideration for the human race what-so-ever. If you studder during a speech, or even glance at your note card... 10pt deduction. For the love of god, save yourself, get out while you still can, if she doesnt end your life, you'll want to do it yourself!

Judy will work you hard for an intro class. She will even make you get up in class and tell you how to improve. You will be a better speaker after you leave her class, that is not true of ANY other intro class. If you don't like being told what you're doing wrong, then don't take her. If you want to be a better speaker, take her. Your grade will be equivalent to your effort.

One of the best teachers on campus. Unlike the ridiculous grading schemes that permeate other speech classes, Mrs. Woodring actually grades on speaking(which makes sense, as it is a speaking class). She also forces students to genuinely improve their speaking ability, wihch is a rarity in most 145 classes. An excellent teacher.

I really enjoyed this class. I think she is very helpful if you have any troubles. For the most part the only grades we had were on our speeches, although we had a few quizes. I think she is fair with grading. You must work hard and show overall improvement in your speeches to do well in the class. This is not an easy class but I personally walked away learning something from her class. I feel that because of that class I am a better public speaker. I would recommend her to others.

Judy Woodring is a smug woman who treats students as though they were idiots. Though she seemed nice at first, she became distraught with the fact that she couldn't sculpt every student in her class into a world class forensics student. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
