Dr. Shivel takes what could be a hard and boring class into a fun and interesting class. She is very good at explaining things. This class is only offered at 8 am, but I didn't mind at all. I hope I get to take her again soon!

Mrs. Shivel is the best professor you will ever have in the DMT department. She is very in-tune with the industry. Her couse is very relevant to what ever field you choose to pursue, rather it be a designer; stylist, buyer, or visual merchandiser. Her tests are more than fair, and if you see something you wish to dispute, she will actually take it into consideration. The only downside to is her attendance policy..
tip: She likes to approach things from a historical stand point.. make SURE you do your readings..
Enjoy.

I learned a lot from this course and Mrs. Shivel brought tons of insight from her real-life experiences. She helped me formulate a great resume just in time to apply for my internship too! Show up, interact in discussions, and READ the assignments and you'll be fine!

By far, the worst class I have had at WKU. This class should be fun and semi-easy, but Shivel's class turned into her bragging session about the places she has been and where she fits into fashion. She gives no clear instructions on any of her expectations. It's awful.

I took this class as an online version. Overall the class was good. You have to buy the textbook though. Each week you have to turn in a chapter response. This is fairly easy. All you do is choose to read three articles that follow the chapter and sum them up using the terms and concepts from the chapter. Every other week there was a discussion board that you had to participate in. This wasn't bad either. She gave you a list of questions to answer in discussion form. The tests were not hard but it makes them easier if you have read the chapters. The test was timed so being able to recall what chapter you read something in made it easier. We only had two tests: a mid term and a final. The final was not comprehensive. Overall a very interesting class and one that I would recommend.

Only one word....AWESOME! She is so interesting and takes information that could be really boring and makes it relevant to us. She really cares if we get the information. Tests are hard and the material has lots of detail so you have to study. But coming to class is great!

Dr. Shivel is an awesome professor and lady. She has prepared me very well to begin my career. She helps with internships and with job searches. She is the BEST teacher in the department and my favorite teacher at WKU. She makes you work hard and she is very picky, but you don't mind because you realize you will use what she is teaching and that she is truly looking out for the student's best interest. I only wish other teachers would take their jobs as seriously. I will never forget her.

I had Mrs. Shivel for four classes this semester and I thought I'd be sick of her, but I can't wait to take her again. She has the talent of making her students feel important and special. She really cares and always takes the time to help! I love her.

Everyone should take this class! Ms. Shivel is an excellent teacher who truly wants her students to succeed. Her lectures are interesting and her stories are great! She takes information that could be dull and boring and turns it into a class that is fun and engaging! Don't get me wrong because you have to study hard but she makes you want to do well.

I thought this class would be a lot easier than it turned out to be. Ms. Shivel is a nice teacher who makes the class go by pretty quickly. The only problem I had with her is that she doesn't review for tests and her study guides only highlight some of the things on the test. I feel like if you're going to give us a study guide give us one that is worth using. Her tests are hard. Her power points come straight from the book, but the test has a lot of stuff not covered in class. My advice is to read and highlight and study straight from that.

Ms. Shivel is the best teacher I have ever had. She is passonate about the fashion industry and is extremely knowledgeable. She is a very hard teacher and her expectations are high, but she is fair and she is always available to help. The only problem I had in class was the other students always complaining about having to work hard. To them, I say "grow up"!

The only words that I can use to describe Mrs. Shivel is uppity bi??h. She freaks out if we write down the notes from the overhead. If you don't take notes then what is the point of coming to class? And every week you have to write an article reveiw from a trade publication, which wouldn't be bad but every article I did the same way, but my grade kept changing. First I got a 10/10 then the grade started slowly dropping, but I didn't change a thing. Then one day she was absent and gave us a huge packet, so we all did the assignment listed, but when she came back she said it wasn't due, because she didn't state on the paper that it was to be turned in so everybody did 12 pages of work for nothing..I mean who does that to students. THE DEVIL..that's who!! Don't take Mrs. Shivel if you can help it!!!

This class was very interesting and we had great discussions in class, but the tests were not constructed very well. Most tests covered two or three chapters plus a ton of notes from class. After studying all the material, we would take the tests and be shocked at the questions she asks. For example, over three chapters on domestic abuse, she would ask a statistic that was mentioned briefly in an entire paragraph of other stats. It was ridiculous and each tests was different so you did not know what to focus on. Shivel did let us use our book and notes for 15 minutes on test days, but with the picky questions it may take 15 minutes to find the answer. Loved the class and discussion, but the tests were terrible.

I did not feel that Mrs. Shivel knew the material well enough to clearly explain it to us. For example, we a project dealing with the stock market. Unless you were familar with the stock market then it was very difficult. She would also suggests websites that would help us with certain projects, and some of them were not available anymore or had a fee you had to pay. I like Mrs. Shivel a lot and she tells very funny stories, but if you really want to know how to manage some family resources, take someone else.

Mrs. Shivel is an AMAZING teacher! She has so much interesting information to share, which makes the class fly by. There is little homework in her class, just a 1-2 paper every other week over certain readings. Her test, however, are hard! You have to read the textbook in order to do well on her test. She does give you 10 minutes at the end of class to use your book on the test though. She is an awesome teacher, and I would recommend her to just about anyone!

Mrs. Shivel is an excellent teacher. She loves her subject matter and expresses this by her great teaching ability. Her classes are often coed and involve great open conversation. She gives 3 or 4 tests all of which are multiple choice, 1 book report, and ethical journal. The class is easy, and you learn alot about yourself and others.
