This was the only class I took with Dr. Brown, and I feel the way he taught it was sub-par. I took it purely as a finance elective and I thought it would be interesting. Come to find out its not unless you're overly infatuated with banks. You have to play this ProBanker game (which seems to excite him) and it is extremely difficult. He is under the mistaken impression (at least in my case) that you enjoy playing it like you do a video game. You have to do reports ever so often over aspects of your fictitious bank and its fictitious performance which I found difficult to do based on knowledge and found myself BS'ing alot. As for the textbook/conceptual material, he just goes over the slides in surface-level detail and tells you to read the book. I'm hear to tell you the stuff is not easy to piece together on your own. I (and as far as I could tell the rest of the class) went into the final not knowing what was going on. Fortunately I only needed a 40 (which I surpassed by a narrow margin) to get a B. In summation, if you need a business elective, look elsewhere.

Dr. Brown is a great professor and I enjoyed this class. If you are a finance major/minor, Dr. Brown is the best professor to take. I found the class to be very easy, but I like finance and am a finance major. Most people make this class harder than it really is. Use some logic, study and go to class and you will do fine. Attendance is mandatory and if you care about you GPA you will want to go anyway. He offers a 25 point extra credit assignment, but it is time consuming. Just because you turn it in does not mean that you will get credit. You must spend time on it and put forth an effort.

Dr. Brown generally teaches this course during winter term, every other year. The class is a mix of on-line and class room. You will have several online quizzes that are timed, so be familiar with the material ahead of time. The tests will be on three Fridays in a row and are on campus. He will have a review session the day before the test and will cover most of what is on the exam. The review session will last 2-3 hours. After the review session, study hard for few hours and you will do fine. This is a great course that will provide insight into commercial and residential real estate. If you ever plan on owning real estate, take this class. Dr. Brown taught us about the subprime and the possible adverse problems that could show up long before 99.9% of America had ever heard the word.

Ok, first I will start off by saying for the most part I am an all A student, and I got a D in Dr. Brown's class. I heard he was the teacher to take for this course, but let me inform you he is not!!!!
I will partially give him the benefit of the doubt you will for sure learn how to do finance undoubtably because you are forced to. I would study countless hours. On some test around 20 hours or greater and my test average would be a 72 percent.
I would so stear clear of this guy if you are looking for an easy grade. The ridiculous thing is this course is the most difficult finance course in the finance major at wku. Now you take the most difficult finance course with the a very very very very difficult teacher then all i can say is good luck!
Now on the other hand if you are a finance major then maybe this guy is the one take take, but this is outright ridiculous I talked with a guy in my class that was an Ag major and this course was required for him. Who the hell draws up the degree program requirements for WKU. Lets face it a few months after the only finance course I am required to take I will have forgotten all the information that Mr. Brown tortured me into learning anyhow.
Gotta love college!!
Oh and another thing there is no way Dr. Brown has all green smileys on here and the are genuine. Trust me take Brown you will be miserable all semester. My philosophy is he was much easier on students in previous semesters and perhaps he was getting harked at by his superiors into making his course more difficult. I do not know but I talked with many in my class that said they wished they hadn't taken this guy.

This course is completely different from any class you've ever had because it's based around a bank simulation game called ProBanker. Starting out, you will feel a little overwhelmed, but you will, as Dr. Brown assures you, get the hang of it as you go. In teams of 3, you will be responsible for making the management decisions of your "bank," competing against the other banks in your class, and preparing 2 annual reports. If you like to learn through experience and actually getting in there and doing it yourself, this will be an enjoyable class! We also used the textbook to reinforce what we were doing in ProBanker, and took a multiple choice test over the book material. Our final was a 12 minute presentation of our performance. This class isn't hard as long as you are willing to put in a little effort and be a part of a team. He grades completely on your ability to write quality reports, not how your bank performs. If definitely helped that I was a Finance major (as far as understanding financial ratios, etc.), but I think any business student would do fine in this class. Dr. Brown is a very fair professor, and he is willing to help anytime you are falling behind or just need some extra help.

Dr. Brown was a really nice professor, his extra credit project is worth 25 points added on to your total points. This really gave my grade a boost. His exams can be difficult, but you get to use one index card for each exam and three for the final. The only studying I did for the exams was making out the index cards... He gives you a detailed format for each test so there aren't really any surprizes. There were supposed to be five homework quizzes, which were straight from the homework or class notes. He would announce this in advance. We only got to take 3 so have gave everyone 10's on the last two quizzes.... Overall I really liked this professor...

This class will be difficult for some but easy for others. Typically if you are an accounting major and you know your stuff in accounting you will do fine. However those that think accounting is hard and stuggle with it...will have a hard time grasping the concepts of finance. The calculations are the easiest problems on the test. Only problem is they make up half the test. Conceptual questions will make you or break you in the class. Ive heard that the other teachers do not go as in depth with the calculations like Brown does. From what Ive heard Im glad that I took Brown.

Dr. Brown is extremely fair and I would recommend taking this with him. I don't know if it was just the material or the way it was presented, but I had a hard time following lectures. I find accounting to be easy, but found this to be difficult.

You get to use an index card on all test, but the tests are still hard even with the index card. All the notes are on powerpoint, but you still need to come to class for pop attendance quizzes. There are 5 attendance quizzes and 5 homework quizzes.

Brown, as a prof in my opinion is pretty bad. I have had bad profs before but he is the first that has made me say something on profeval. This guy stands behind the computer and uses slides that you print out and just clicks through them. He talks and write formulas that he erases 5 seconds after he writes them down. He does not get to know his students at all or maybe the select few that kiss up. for your info he likes golf. his test suck, all multiple choice and are really hard because you have to use formulas that you learned in class but were erased. Attendance is mandatory kinda because if he calls roll and your not there you just lost pts. Which by the way you better earn as much as you can because nothing counts much but somehow you have to have a really high point total to pass. I advise not to take him but i hear there is no one better. So if you take him, at least you know what your getting into. And some advice to accounting majors because of the accounting classes and how hard they are, you will think Fin 330 is easy, because of how hard accounting is. But this finance is not that easy and you better give it some attention along with accounting.

Dr. Brown makes finance as easy as it can possibly be. He invites you to ask questions, and wants everyone to understand what he is teaching. Although his class is hard he does many things that allow people to pass even if they do not ace all of his tests.

The first day of class Dr. Brown tells you this is the hardest class in the finance major, and he isn't kidding. If you can avoid this class then do!! The case studies are ridiculous because there are no right answers. Good luck for those who have to take this class as part of your major, study study study....

He gives attendance quizzes, so if you go to class, you get a 10/10 easily. You get to use one 3.5 x 5 inch index card on the tests, which you can use for formulas, etc. The tests are all multiple choice, about 30 questions. 3 tests, a final, about 5 quizzes...good teacher to take for this class.

Dr. Brown is a great prof. He has a excellent grasp on the subject and gets it across to the class without boring them to death. He is also willing to help outside of class, he even helped me with financial data modeling! Highly recommended if you are required to take this course.
