Dr. Reed is the best professor you can take for any history class. He always gives helpful feedback on papers and tests. His lectures aren't boring, read the chapters assigned and you'll get an A.

I really didn't like this class. It's all essays. He assigns online quizzes at the beginning of the year and in order to do well you have to read the entire chapter from the book and there is one for every chapter. So it's reading the entire book cover to cover. It's very time consuming. He will give you advice if you ask for it. He's very dry. It's a mandatory class, and I imagine all of them are some what difficult. Good luck.

Dr. Reed is probably my favorite history professor so far at WKU, he is very much laid back and is very easy to get along with. The only thing i didn't like about this class was that there were 4 papers over 4 different books and i feel that while book reports are a key part of history courses theyre certainly not the sole indicator. The 2 exams were online and rather easy, he stopped taking attendance after the 4th week because he knew we were all coming to class anyways. I would recommend Dr. Reed for any History class.

This class was very difficult, but I enjoyed it. I studied alot for his tests, which are essay questions only. He doesn't offer any extra credit, but as long as you study the book and include tiny details into your essays he'll notice and give you the grade you deserve. There are 3 essay tests, and 2 take-home essays required. I thought he was a great teacher, and I definitely recommend him.

Dr. Reed gives wonderful lectures. They are clearly outlined on a projector at the beginning of class so I suggest arriving a few minutes early to copy the outline. Success in the class depends solely on your ability to write with intelligence and organization and take quick, detailed notes as he lectures. His policy on attendance states that more than 6 absences results in automatic failure of the course but he hardly ever took attendance so it wasn't a big deal. There were two take-home essays and three in-class essay tests, each worth 100 points. The in-class tests involved choosing 1 of 3 short essays to write about a primary source document, like a painting or speech from history. You also had to choose 1 of 3 prompts for a long essay which had broader topics. I received an A in the class but I wouldn't consider it easy. I learned a lot of information and enjoyed his quirky sense of humor and love for knowledge. Would recommend to decent writers and anyone slightly interested in European history.

He is a very nice looking man! ;)
He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, and seems VERY knowledgeable.
He loves french history. You will take a butt load of notes and the exams are only 2 essay questions. 1 is worth 70% and 1 is 30%.
You have to buy a separate book and write a paper about it.
There are only 2 papers that you have to write.
He gives extra credit at the very end if you have seemed to improve.
I didn't make an A on any of my tests or papers, but i got an A out of the class because I sat in the front and participated in class and was there for every class.
It wasn't a fun class, but it's a ged ed requirement, so he's the best to take!

I've had Dr. Reed before this class, but this is the first time taking an upper level course of his. I have to say I enjoyed this even more than my 120 class I had with him. If you are a history major or minor Dr. Reed is one of the best professors the history department has to offer and I highly suggest taking one of his classes. You won't regret it.

I am not a history person at all, but this class was so good. Dr. Reed made the material interesting and broke up the classes enough with things other than lecture that I rather enjoyed going. The class consists of three exams, all weighted the same amount, and two papers. Dr. Reed loves answering students' questions and he may pad your grade a bit if you go to see him about a paper or test beforehand for some extra help. He especially likes when students speak up in class. The exams ask you to answer one long and one short essay each and the long essay topics are often pretty clear and presented in a lecture. The short essays ask you to analyze a document and why it is important to historians. As long as you can BS, you'll be fine. Overall, Dr. Reed was easy to talk to and entertaining throughout the course. He's the best history professor I've ever had in school.

Dr. Reed is an excellent teacher. He covers quite a bit of ground with his notes, but reading the books is also essential. He makes history understandable, and has a great sense of humor. He can relate easily to the class. His tests are one long essay and a short essay, but if you study and read the book, you'll make a good grade. He also offers improvements points throughout the semester on your exams. I highly reccommend him for His. 120, or any other class he teaches!!

Dr. Reed was an awesome instructor! His lectures can get boring at times like most professors, but for the most part they were interesting. You read 4 books and write four 5-7page essays on each and have 2-3 exams and the final. He uses a point system, and he doesn't offer extra credit, but he awards up to 50 discretionary points at the end of the semester based on attendance, participation, and improvement on papers. As long as you come to class and study you will be fine. I probably could've gotten an A if I participated more.

Dr. Reed is a great young guy, and really tries to engage the class through his lecturing style. I really think he is very fair in grading, and a great guy, especially if you show interest and approach him in a friendly manner. His exams are all one long essay, and two short-answer essay questions from the book, and he likes to see both hard facts like dates and names, and a showing of how you feel about this (if relevant), and MOST importantly (Note this!): how this part of history affected history after this point, and how history before this point affected the events in question! He said to my class that this is the primary thing he wants in an essay exam, and through answering this well, you can show your mastery of this course. He looks for attendance, though not always on Friday (not never, though), and really likes it if you can speak-up when he asks the class a question; standing out in these big Gen-Ed classes will help you get a better grade! The only thing I can warn you about is that he will NON-STOP lecture for the WHOLE class period, with all of what he says relevant and possible as questions on the exams. I literally had about 2-3 pages of notes a day (almost 10 pages a week). If you have trouble taking notes, or dislike studying them, this may hurt you in this class, but if you can understand the notes, and study them, you will get a really solid understanding of the topic of this course! I highly recommend him for any History major, or anyone not afraid of studying!

Dr.Reed was a great professor and I would strongly recommend to any student who is not the best history buff to take his class! He tries to keep class interesting with his stories and occasional jokes, but he does lecture almost every day in class. He puts an outline of his lectures on powerpoint, however what he actually says in class is the information you'll need to regurgitate for the tests. So, take good notes! I also recommend that you outline the chapters and pay attention to the subjects that the book offers a lot of information on---they usually show up on the tests as ID's. The class overall was pretty painless, just don't blow it off, you need to actually show up for class to do well, but Dr. Reed is always willing to help any student if they need it.

This class did not live up to the horror stories I had heard about it. Mr. Reed is a very intelligent professor who gives well prepared lectures and is always looking for input from students. He gives out points at the end of the year based on your class participation and how well you improve on your test grades, with anywhere from 0-50 pts possible. You have three tests, and each one is 2 short answer and 1 long essay. The short answers come from the book and the long essay comes from his lectures mainly. The best way to study is have a friend that takes the test before you and get it from them because they are all the same. You also have two essays that are due- 1 over a short story and 1 over a novel of your choice. They're both easy and you don't have to finish the novel to be able to write the essay. His lectures are all oral with no written notes on the board so you have to listen and be able to write fast, but notes are not vital to do well. Also, if you come in one day and the TV's at the front of the room, turn right back around and leave because the movies suck and they have no impact on the class at all. All in all, the class was not that hard but you have to be a good essay writer to do well. RECOMMEND!

DONT take his class on TR, he goes the ENTIRE length of the class, if not more, which is waay to long to be around this man. You have to write a paper on this really complicated micromegas story that was written like 1000 years ago and also read a book and write about it. ok so pretty much just try to find another teacher

Notes in the low-moderate category.
He is fairly easy to get along with, though profane in his language, even in lecture. Talk to him about your 15-20 page research paper; he'll give you sugestions and be much more likely to like the final product. He is loose about format and Internet sources, and the paper was done in equally weighted stages. Since the course topic was so broad, this paper could be basically about anything that one is interested in. Just one easy test. You have to speak in class at times, but it is real informal and not a problem. So, there is good amongst the bad. Overall maybe better than others that teach this in some aspects.

Western Civ. is said to be one of the most difficult general ed classes at Western, so I did have some doubts going into this course. Reed is a very good teacher. He puts the information out that you really need to know and discusses every topic in depthly til everyone understand. The worst thing about this class is that the test are completley essay which can be tough, but he gives review sessions the night before that generally help out alot. Western Civ. isn't an easy course no matter who you take, but I would definetley recommend him!

Dr. Reed is a sort of "new school" history teacher with more emphasis on papers and discussion with good and bad. Well, the good first. Professor Reed is a nice guy. You can disagree with him and he'll still be fair with you. His niceness seems genuine when you talk with him, unlike some others. He seems to care about students. His class allows for lots of discussion, and many seemed eager to participate. The extra credit is based on this and your improvement over the semester. I was blessed to receive some of this. The class itself can be generally interesting as he is a good lecturer and he uses Powerpoint for visuals.
However, he often seems to eager to play the cool guy unsuccessfully and says some offensive things in class; not just bad language. His left politics can often creep into his lectures as he generally plays down America's role. He says he is a card-carrying member of the ACLU. He's not as bad as some though. The class requirements (3 papers, 2 tests) aren't bad, but the papers can be hard to get a handle on what exactly he wants. I got lower grades on the first two than I hoped for. Format is less important on papers than content; they are like book reports on 3 pretty large books that I did not think were great. Be sure to use some outside sources from class and give lots of analysis. Overall, it may prove difficult to get an A since papers are roughly 60% of the grade.
Should you take him? Well, if he teaches a class you need, he'd be okay.

I really enjoyed Professor Reed's class and I found it very challenging. His class was not difficult at all and the only reason why I had received B is because I did not put much effort in the papers we were assigned to do. There are really few notes to take. Prof. Reed likes to discuss the documents with the class and everyone who wants to express their opinion is more then welcomed to. There are only two tests throughout the semester and if you scan the textbook and read the documents, you will be all set for the test. Also, he's really energetic, caring and easy going. This is a little bit of a tough class, because it's Western Civ. Professors have to cover a lot of material in a small amount of time, but Dr. Reed really makes it a fun, enjoyable class. He cracks a lot of jokes, which are usually corny but I laughed at them. His tests are one big essay question and then a couple of identify things where you have to write a paragraph about one term. The best thing about this class is that for his tests you don't need to memorize absolutely all the information that he covers. If you know two chapters really well and how they relate to each other, you can usually do pretty well. Also his final wasn't cumulative. I definitely recommend taking Dr. Reed for this class.

Overall, Reed is very knowledgeable and prepared for class. You will learn from his notes, although he tended to be very Eurocentric in this class and especially focused on France. He grades tests (all essays) and papers very hard but not unfairly so. To make good grades on them you WILL need to read the texts and regurgitate absolutely every bit of knowledge you can remember. Personally he is very willing to help and has a sense of humor, but sometimes comes off as arrogant and/or patronizing. Good professor if you are willing to put in some work.

I had Dr. Reed as part of the Humanities Semester and I really enjoyed his class. He is fast paced and challenges his students to keep up with him while still taking 3-5 pages of notes per class. He knows his subject extremely well and if you listen to him and do the readings, there is no way you can fail. The chapters are huge, usually about 30 pages and very hard to read, and he expects you to read about one chapter a week. It's easy to get behind and hard to catch up if you slack off on the readings. He also requires you to attend all classes and missing more than 6 results in an automatic F. Despite that, I would definately take Dr. Reed again because he is a good teacher, cares about his students and how they perform in his class, and his really bad, corny jokes provide amusement.

He seems nice, but he is fresh out of Graduate School, really knows his stuff, and thinks everyone in the class should know it as well. He doesn't explain things very well (partially because of his HUGE vocabulary) and I found the course to be VERY confusing! His essay questions are ridiculous, they are so broad and vague that you really have no idea what kind of answer he wants. A book report is also mandatory in his class...and I found the books to be very difficult.

This is the only teacher I have ever had who actually used the attendance and participation part of the grade to penalize. I only missed one day of class but still received a B in this area, bringing my entire grade down to a B. He does not prepare you well for the tests (although there will almost definitely be an essay question regarding turning points of WWI and WWII). His grading, in my opinion, was inconsistent, and I was unsure of what exactly he expected on our three papers. He was a very nice professor and seemed very interested in the subject. However, he returns papers and tests VERY slowly.

Dr. Reed is a good professor, but you need to know how to take notes. The discussions are in depth and fast. You need to be able to write fast and still pay attention to what he is saying next. He uses power point to aid in lectures. Tests are fairly easy as long as you do the required reading and read over your notes.
