Dr. Abbott is very knowledgeable in her field, yet I don't think she is that great of a lecturer. She just goes straight facts and she doesn't tell the material like it is a story, which is very boring. She grades extremely hard on her exams (which there are three of, including the final). She assigns two papers.

Dr. Abbott sometimes comes across as more abrasive as I think she means to. She generally gives some of the highest grade averages in the department. It helps to be a good test taker in this class, as much of the grade is weighted to tests. The material is interesting at times and covers a variety of subjects on Indians. She moves quickly though on notes and can seem "unusual" to those that participate. Overall good to balance out classes with several papers.

Dr. Abbott is a very good teacher and quite entertaining. She lectures and uses video. There is some reading of primary documents required and a lot of notes. There are two major assignments; an analysis of a periodical and an annotated bibliography. Neither assignment is too much to handle. She hands out the one major essay for each test long before test time and gives and nice review sheet for you to study from. I really enjoyed having her as a teacher.

As long as you listen and take notes you'll do fine. The subject matter is not hard at all, neither are the papers as long as you PAY ATTENTION and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. Most people who had a hard time in my class didn't follow the directions well....
She also gave us an outline of the paper format and how to answer the essay questions, and check this out....your only tools for information are the textbook and Sources book. You have no research to do!!! All you have to do is apply the info to your paper/test questions.

Dr. Abbott is a good teacher in the way that she is very passionate in what she is teaching. She goes over the test material in class and you do need to take notes. This is a challenge in itself b/c there are a lot of notes to take. She has you do like 10 papers and you can pick the best 8 for your final grade. She has a two hour time slot for her tests and it usally took me close too three. It is all essay and she expects you to know what led up to a certain event, what the event was, and what it led to. There are 7 ID terms and they turn into essays and then there is a essay at the end which is 30% os the test grade. This is a difficult class!

If you are NOT a history major or don't feel like putting forth a strong effort, find another professor! This class is probably the most in depth class I will ever take. Dr.Abbott is a cool woman. She knows exactly what she's talking about. She likes it when you know what you're talking about during her lecture. For her tests, you will have to be very particular and not leave anything out b/c they are essay, and if you do leave something out, it's more than likely going to be a crucial thing. She is very understanding...she let me reschedule my last test b/c I felt overwhelmed by my other exams. That was GREAT! Bring a tape recorder for lecture and you will do great!

I can't believe I actually made it through this course with a "B"! Dr. Abbott was incredibly difficult for a first-semester freshman course. I poured over the text and took excessive notes and still felt like I was going to fail the class. She is very intellegent and she knows her history, but I wouldn't recommend this course to any freshmen unless you are a history buff...

She talks really fast, so be prepared to write fast or bring a tape recorder. Overall, the class wasn't too difficult as long as you study. On the tests, know everything there is to know about the ID terms...don't leave anything out. Form study groups, they help a LOT with getting all of the info for the terms. There was no final, just the last test.

Dr. Abbott started off the class the first day saying she was a bitch and she didn't care if she was one either. I believe that she isn't that bad of one, but she can be and she is very intellegent and wants everyone to be just as intellegent. She doesn't except late papers...that you have to write ALL the time (12 or so in all) but she does knock off the lowest of the 5 grades. She expects you to have class participation when all you do is listen to her lecture. She could not keep my attention during class and everyone would often fall asleep during class.
You would expect her to be nicer about college students hating history, since she did fail out her first time around in college, but she isn't and she expects you to know EVERYTHING she knows.
Her tests are hard, and I studied for a week straight and only recieved low B's on the test. She expects you to know 30 ID terms while only 7 will be on the test.
She is a funny lady at times, but she mubbles and tells stories about NOTHING a lot of the time.
Try not to take her, she is kinda hard expecially if you hate history!

This class is not for the timid. If opionated, fast speaking, knowledgable women scare you, she is not your teacher. This class goes quick and your are required to complete small papers on the reading that she assigns. She doesn't grade hard so long as you get ALL of the material in the paper. She tells you what is on her tests, but you must be specific and write everything you know. She's funny and has eccetric choice in clothing. - Overall she's a good teacher :)

Abbott is the only teacher I can say I hate. She talks from before the class starts untill after the class ends. She often gets off subject when she is talking but she will still test over the stuff that she forgot to teach about. She also tests with only essays and if you don't fill up at least one entire blue book then you don't even have a chance at getting a B. If you ask any questions in her class she will make you feel stupid even if you know what your talking about. If there isn't another teacher to take the class from, just take it another time.

UGH. I didn't like Dr. Abbot. At all. Does she know her history? Absolutely. Is she capable of keeping your attention? Absolutely.
Unfortunately, she seems to be one of those "My class is the most important class you'll ever take" teachers. Then again, who isn't? Anyway, she doesn't seem too awful pleasant and she looks as though she's always pissed off about something.
If your answer in class isn't what she wants, don't be surprised if she takes it personally and takes subtle jabs at you over it. I made that mistake and she had a fit. She asked what economist Adam Smith thought of something and I answered. Of course, my previous research on Smith and his work was irrelevant and her opinion reigned supreme. That happened with a few other students as well. I eventually dropped. I got a C on my only test in her class, and the test wasn't too awful hard, but it wasn't a cakewalk.
If you're a history major or will need this course before moving on to other history courses, it's probably a good idea to take Dr. Abbott. Despite her god-awful personality, you'll get a deep and thorough lesson in history. If you're like me and are taking a history class simply to fulfill a Gen Ed requirement, find another professor. There's no point in having to bust your butt to the nth degree to knock out a Gen Ed requirement.

This course requires actually going to class. If you miss a day in Ms. Abbott's Hist 120, it seems as if you'll never catch up! I began with a one subject notebook for notes in this class and wound up with 2 that were completely overstuffed! (With pages written on front and back in small handwriting...) She speaks extremely quick and you will soon learn the art of concise notetaking in her course!! You will be required to read 3 short books (if you get to all of them) and write 5-7 page essays on each. Her tests are entirely essay form with 7 ID terms and 5 quotes from the reading. (She gives you a study guide with EVERYTHING that will be on the test.) She is an interesting teacher and is always willing to help. I would recommend her to anyone who is willing to put forth a moderate amount of effort.

Dr. Abbott is a really good teacher aside from all the rambling she does in class. She's kind of hard to take notes from. But once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad. But make sure you read everything! or most things. I found that out just before the last test. :O( Don't make my mistake. Remember though, she is willing to help anyone who makes an effort to try and improve their grades. I had a D throught most of the semester, and with her help and taking her advice on revising my essay (of the three you have to write) I got a C. Good Luck!

Dr. Abbott is an excellent teacher. This was the one history class in which I actually looked forward to attending because her lectures were so interesting. You could get by without having the textbook, for everything on the exams come from your class notes; however, I found the book was very helpful when preparing for tests. You DO need to buy the novels she requires however, as the exam essays are specifically about the novels. The tests require a lot of preparing, and A LOT of writing....luckily they are untimed. Don't be too overwhelmed about this class...if you actually attempt to get a good grade, you will. She is a very effective teacher, and I highly reccommend taking her.....just remember, History 120 will be a hard class no matter what professor you have, so go from the best!

Yes her class was very hard, infact I had to study more for that class than any other class I've ever had. But thats okay, because she made history interesting in the way she presented it and that inevitably made me want to study and do well in there. I never had the urge to even skip her class. There are a LOT of notes, but as long as you pay attention and study, you should do well in there. You MUST have the novels for that class, and you probably ought to have the text book. I suppose you could get by without it, but it REALLY helps when studying for her tests. The tests require a LOT of writing, and take a while to complete. As a teacher she is very effective and I would recommend her to anyone!!!! :)

I took this class as an honors class, though I am not an honors student. I feel Dr. Abbott is tough, but you really learn a lot from her. There is a lot of reading, but for the most part, it is pretty good. The books were well picked. Our test were out of class. There were only two, the midterm and the final, but they are really long. On these, you will be expected to write seven out of ten short answer responses and three out of five short answer responses over quotations. There is a five to seven page essay as well. Each of the short answer questions are about a page each...by the time you are done. But you get about a week or week and a half to work on it. You also get the pleasure of writing up a ten to twelve page term paper about any thing you want, as long as it relates to women in US history. This is a wonderful class. I think everyone should take it. I know I really learned a lot.

I learned a lot in this class. However, Dr. Abbott is one of the most unpleasant people I have ever encountered in my life. She's cool enough in class, but outside of class she refused to acknowledge me, EVEN AS I WAS WALKING TO HER CLASS (there were 8 people in my class so I KNOW she knows who I am), and when I went to her office to ask her some questions about the midterm, she first asked me if I was a history major. When I said no, she had no more comments for me. She encourages us to speak in class (in fact, your grade is 20% attendance and participation, whatever that means) but whenever I said anything, she looked at me like I was speaking Dutch and totally disregarded anything I had to say. The course material I actually really enjoyed, but it really needs to be split into two sections because there is too much to cover in one semester. As for what your grade consists of, there is a midterm, a final, and a term paper. The term paper was due for me the Monday of finals week and the final Thursday. It sucked. A lot. The final and the midterm were both take-home and both consisted of "short answers" off one page each--we had to do 7, quotations that you had to explain for at least a page--3 of those, and a 5-8 page essay. The term paper had to be from primary sources and 10-12 pages. I THINK I got a B in this course, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got a C. If you do decide to take this class, or any of her classes, be prepared to do a LOT of reading (we read 5 books along with readings out of 3 texts) and take lots of notes.
Updated 12/14/2001

Dr. Abbott is a very effective teacher. She is one of those teachers who makes History actually interesting. Her voice is quite loud, but hey it is better than having a professor who's voice is monotone. Her test are strictly essays. But don't let that scare you because they aren't really hard. You'll stay on her good side as long as you don't walk out of class or argue with her. Because her defense will be it took her 16 years to get her degree and she knows more than you. If you keep this in mind you will do great. However, she does not like slakers.
