This class is rather difficult, so if you want an easy A, it's probably not a good class to take. However, I really enjoyed the class overall.
There was one midterm which was hard, and he didn't really explain it that well beforehand so I wasn't sure what to study, but I still got a B on it.
Almost every week there is a one-page paper (single-spaced) over an article we had to read in the book. As long as it was succinct as possible and very structured, it was pretty easy to get a decent grade. These did take up a great deal of my time, however.
The final was a ten-page paper (to the line, double-spaced) over a book we had to read. It's a good idea to start reading this book soon, maybe even before he actually talks about it, to make sure there is enough time to complete the assignment. I spent many, many hours on this paper, but I ended up getting an A in the class for my hard work.
Overall, I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Cobane is a great man, and I'm really glad I got to know him. He made the material very interesting, and even though attendance wasn't necessarily required, and it was an 8:00 class, I did not skip one class. I would definitely recommend this class as long as you are willing to put in some hard work.

This is definitely a tough class. I was really scared at first. Dr. Cobane is really high demanding and he does expect you to work extremely hard to get through the class. There are a lot of assigned reading for you almost every week. You need to pick at least 10 articles in the book and for each article, write a 1-page answering 9 questions, and it is a very time-consuming thing to do. It actually took me at least 4 hours to read an article and do the paper. Cobane wants you to be great in everything. The exams are all essays and cover a dang lot of materials and never wait until the last minute to learn stuff. However, Cobane is a fun teacher. He is very smart, enthusiastic, witty, funny and knowledgeable. He makes you think bigger and have a more some tools to learn about the world. The class is very informative, fun, interesting and does teach you a lot about what's going on the the world. This is a class that I think I actually LEARNED something in it. But like I said, it is a very TOUGH class, you feel overwhelmed and might just wanna get out :D

Dr. Cobane is a great guy, and his lectures were really fun and interesting. He just assigned way too much reading. I couldn't do it all and keep up in all of my other classes. The grade I received in this class is not at all typical for me: I'm an A/B student. The class was way too difficult for a 200-level gen-ed. class.
