Dr. Gelderman is the worst professor I've ever had. He is an arrogant prick, often expresses his desire to be the emperor of physics, and often criticizes specific students in class. He is usually late for class, but always wants to keep you up to five minutes late. His grading system for the class is equally insane, as he makes it nearly impossible to do well. He is also a known wife beater, and his attitude in class makes that understandable. I was a 4.0 student before this class, and now i'm in danger of failing. In class, he often rambles about relatively irrelevant concepts while ignoring the important backbone of the course. As a result, he rarely works example problems in class, but when he does he often gets the wrong and confuses students even more. I was a 4.0 honors student before this class. I don't feel Gelderman would be qualified to teach physics to my dog.

This man is a COMPLETE ASS HOLE!!!! he will make you feel stupid if you ask him a question, it takes him forever to get back to you on your discussion board postings, and he has no sympathy for his students, and he will NEVER help you with any one your work. DO NOT take any of his classes because he will make you semester miserable just like he has mine.

Physics 265 is a hard course and Dr. Gelderman is a very hard professor. Expect to have several hours of homework each night on Mastering Physics and expect to have class periods where you learn nothing or very little that pertains to what needs to be learned. In many of his classes, Dr. Gelderman talks for ten minutes and then passes out an in class activity that takes 15 minutes to do and then 20 minutes to talk about in class once you get your answers finished. These in class activities do not help much but each one does count as extra credits points on your last test before the final exam. In the rare cases that he does lecture, they are good lectures that help out with the material you are learning. The mastering physics has around 50 assignments each with 6 - 22 problems in each set that takes between 1.5 - 3 hours to finish and one is due each day of class. Some of these MP have bonus points on them if you finish them. Sadly each mastering physics assignment is about content you have not went over in class that is required to be done before the day in class that you are supposed to talk about the material. It is like you do the homework first and then talk about it after you get graded on it. His tests are hard and you have to prepare to fail them. Dr. Gelderman is not a mean man but he is hard to talk to and he is a serious man. Some of the physics majors liked him but if you are not a physics major like me, you will probably not care for him. He does not suck but he is not a premier teacher. Just try to read the book as much as you can and teach yourself the material or talk to the Physics majors who have had him in the past so they can give you a heads up about his class. It sucks that computer science students have to have this class with a teacher who is hard to learn from.

Dr. Gelderman knows the material, but he can't teach it. Basically, if you don't teach yourself the material you will suffer in his class. His tests are poorly constucted and don't test your overall knowledge of the information. You won't want to go to class because he never talks about relevant information and also he just sucks at keeping your interest.

In our class he cussed us several times throughout the semester and almost caused a walkout becuase of his ignorance. The man doesnt know physics or math period. This man is the definition of ignorance. He blames all his problems on the students and during the class time refuses to teach. He usually would just set at the table with us and point out formulas in the book and say its mathematically elegant. He often said he wasnt a teacher but a facilitator of learning and that his job was not to teach us. We had one homework set that no one turned in and he cussed in the middle of class over it and says you guys can read the damn book your physics majors. Avoid him at all cost. DO NOT TAKE RICHARD GELDERMAN. In fact, do not take 106 at all! If you need an Astronomy course, just take 104 and learn about our own solar system. Gelderman is the worst professor I have ever had. He is extremely pompous and demands way too much work for a 100 level course. His tests are all multiple choice, but there are very difficult. I'm not sure if I ever saw anyone make an A on an exam.
His labs are very confusing and he does a poor job explaining what he is looking for. He goes over in class regularly and can never finish his lesson, no matter how long he holds you over. The assignments online are almost on a daily basis and he will never remind you about them.
Attendance may as well be mandatory because if you miss him handing out a lab, or a class activity, you're SOL. He offers extra credit every Friday, which was my saving grace and pulled me up to a B. I took the Honors course and there were extremely intelligent kids in there PRAYING for a C! Most people were fed up that their 4.0 GPA was going to be ruined by a Gen-Ed, 100-level class.
Please, if you love yourself, do not put yourself in the horrid position of taking this class. You will regret it.

Worst professor/class I have EVER had! He is the most unorganized teacher. His lectures consist of him rambling on and on about nothing. He keeps you at least 5 minutes late every single day. The test are EXTREMELY difficult! While there is extra credit, you can only earn 1 point per week, which doesn't really help your grade too much in the end. The test are worth 150 points and all your homework is only worth 1 or 2 points. Once you bomb one test, your grade is pretty much gone. A lot of times, you have no idea what to expect on the test. This was an honors class, so it wasn't like I was slacking. He gives honors and WKU a bad name. There was no need for a gen. ed. course to be so difficult. Too bad I wasted so much time and money on this class...

Dr. Gelderman really knows his stuff. I got a D because I just didn't go to class, but he really is an okay teacher. He rambles a lot and sometimes you wouldn't know how what he was talking about was relavent to what we were supposed to be discussing.
There's a lot of online homework, quizzes and tutorials. His tests are difficult, and a lot of us in class felt like we didn't know what to study.
His labs are cool, and he gives A LOT of extra credit. If you do the extra credit, you'll be fine in this class. At times, he was pretty cold, and I felt like he didn't care at all.

This class is definitely on the level of a high school course. The small amount of math used is basic algebra. You are not expected to have any prior knowledge of astronomy, it's a class for non-science majors. It includes a lab, and the tests are completely multiple choice. If you do the online quizzes and study them then you know more than half of the questions that will be on the exams. There's no tricky grading policy; the point system is out of 1000, where 900 and up is an A, 800-899 is a B, so on. Extra credit points are available every week in the form of turning in astronomy articles that relate to class as well as extra credit assignments, granted they're usually only worth 1 point per assignment. Dr. Gelderman is definitely one of the wackiest professors I've had, but he keeps class interesting and fun. If you have any interest in astronomy and need honors or science credit, I'd definitely recommend this course.

Dr. Gelderman is a very intelligent man, but he is not a very helpful instructor. I am sure that he could publish his research and become highly respected in his field, but he is not an incredible professor. He talks about hobbits and Star Trek in class when he could be talking about his subject. He is caring because he offers countless extra credit opportunities for his students, but he needs to offer these assignments. All of his tests are multiple choice, and he did not offer a study guide for his final. Also, he does not answer class questions in a timely manner. Good luck getting an email reply from him! I recommend taking another professor for this subject. Gelderman entertains his students, but he should informing them about the subject matter that they paid for.

While the coursework itself is extremely simple for anyone of moderate intelligence (just do what's in the workbook) Dr. Gelderman himself adds a whole new dimension to the classroom environment, one that I found to be totally unintuitive and generally unnecessary. Dr. Gelderman believes in teaching the subject matter in a way that is supposed to give insight on how middle school students might view the concepts taught, since they wouldn't have the background of a college student. This I can understand, but Dr. Gelderman insists on doing this by actually 'treating' you like middle school students, talking in this loud, slow, unnecessarily repetitive manner, reminding you of some guy on a television infomercial. It gives you the feeling that he is constantly 'talking down' to the class, which wouldn't even work with a group of middle school students because even they would quickly pick on the tone in his voice and become insulted.
My biggest complaint is that he is *extremely* unpredictable with what he arbitrarily expects from you from day to day. It often becomes frustrating because he spends weeks teaching you to be extremely careful and not assume anything, then suddenly changes his viewpoint entirely and starts having you 'just assume', and quickly becomes rattled if you can't figure out when he wants you to take which approach. He insists on having this excessively overused notebook, in which he expects you to write 'everything you do' and if you don't pretend that you're a middle school student with no prior experience with the concepts, and work up from there, you'll get points off. Most of your 'quiz' grades are out of three points, and I don't remember ever getting 3 out of 3 over once or twice. Generally he would count off a point (remember, out of 3, making my quiz grade a D) and either say I needed to explain more, or that I needed to be more concise and not get off topic. You never know the correct amount to write or explain, it was like hitting a bullseye. Thankfully the quiz grades didn't count as much as the tests, and although they were graded in the same unpredictable manner in which he handled every other aspect of the class I managed to do well on them.
He also has a problem with realizing you “might have another class at the bottom of the hill after his, so he'll sometimes hand out a 15 minute quiz right before class is supposed to let out. Either don't finish the quiz, be late for your class, or beg him to let you take it later. The same problem occurred with finals, except to a much worse degree. He gave us a final with nearly ten long essay questions, one of which was for use to design and explain an entire experiment with limited tools, to determine how many paperclips it would take to sink a test tube. The final took over two and a half hours for me, and I wasn't the last one done. Several students had to leave before they were finished because they had *another* final they were going to be late for.
To sum up, I wouldn't recommend Dr. Gelderman as a teacher if you can avoid him. Although the class concepts are very simple, he makes the class much more drawn out and uncomfortable than it would have to be if he would just take it easy, be more consistent, and speak to his students like the adults they are.

A lot of reviewers have called this class difficult, but for the most part, its really rather straight forward. Professor Gelderman offers tons of extra credit, he's a nice interesting guy, and he gets really enthused whenever any of his students show actual interest in the lessons he's teaching. Some people I took the class with were upset because they had imagined that it was going to be an easy A like 104. Obviously do to the mixed reviews and grades here, it isn't... but the things he teaches are far more memorable than star charts and learning planet orders. Universe, star and galaxy formation and destruction are all covered
If that kind of stuff intrests you, and you arent affraid of possibly getting a B if you slack off too much, this class is very much worth taking over 104. Just as long as you actually put in some effort, including doing extra credit opportunities you'll be fine. It would take an absolute ma-roon not to get a decent grade.

Dr. Gelderman is a great guy. I truly loved working with him. The class is based solely on doing experiments that middle school and high school kids would do. The amount of writing you will do gets old after about a month. The class can be fun, you will learn a lot about some obvious misconceptions that students have in Physics. Don't miss a lot of class though because you will regret it trust me I had my tonsils taken out and it took a good two weeks of outside class time to get caught up. You need your notebook points and it sucks if you get behind. The concepts aren't hard, you learn by doing.

Dr. Gelderman is so cool. He's a crazy guy though. I took this as a gateway class (by the way). His lectures are AWESOME and entertaining. His tests are impossible to pass, but extra credit is offered every day and twice on fridays. There are 2 or 3 night- lab experiences which are pretty cool. You also get to make light difractors and mess around with those in class. The online tutorials get monotonous but there are so many ways to get through those and make 100% on them all. :-) Even though its frustrating, if you work hard and go to class, he will curve the grades.

First off, Dr. Gelderman is Outstanding; he does take some getting used to though. He tries to intimidate you on the first day of class but that is just because he doesn't want any slackers. He makes himself out to be very rigid but he is actually very kind and will work with you on almost anything. He doesn't take attendance but you will do much better in the class if you are there because he has a way of explaining things much better than the book ever could. It helps to buy the book though because he likes to have discussions and will call on people in class and gets pretty annoyed if no one has read the material. All in all though, an excellent professor. I mean, he uses songs from Monty Python movies as part of his curriculum - how could you not love him? His class is challenging but not impossible. Plus he gives you so many extra credit opportunites that if you turn them all in it ends up being like 25 raw points added to your grade which can really help out. I left this class feeling that I had a real knowledge about astronomy. His teaching methods just make the information stick. He is wonderful and I highly reccommend him - and don't drop him after the first day... just give him a chance!

PLEASE AVOID DR. GELDERMAN AT ALL COSTS!!! Dr. Gelderman is no doubt one of, if not the worst professor I have had at WKU. Dr. Gelderman is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. Outside of class he is very nice, willing to help, however when he lectures he does not teach anywhere near the amount of information he should. His philosophy is that he is just a "teaching facilitator", which basically means you are going to have to teach yourself everything out of the book. And everyone knows how hard it is to read a physics book. Another professor in the department told me that what a professor could teach you how to do in a 50 minute lecture can take 2 or 3 hours outside of class to understand. This is nearly the truth. Our class started with around 25 students and we finished with 16. Test scores for the class were incredibly low--in the 60's or lower most of the time, and this wasn't the average! The mastering physics assignments which Dr. Gelderman gives you each week will take you 7--10 hours each to get a good grade on. Now this is partly due to the nature of the MP program, but it was also due to the fact that we learned little from lecture. Dr. Gelderman is also very discouraging and even mean/insulting when he hands back exams and goes over them. Please spare yourself much pain and don't take Gelderman.

Okay, other than the "Shaggy" jokes we would crack about him, this guy is awesome. He is an astronomy super freak. You can tell he loves what he's doing. The lecture can be a bit boring (except when he starts launching water-propelled rockets in the classroom), but when you start going to the planetarium and the telescope, it's really cool. You have to do some work out of class (looking up at stars and things), so take this class when it is warm outside. This is a great science class for general ed.

A bit eccentric in teaching, but makes difficult material easy to understand. Overall, great professor
