Additional Comments
If you are a white male you have little chance of receiving an A in this course, because she will label you as an opressor of the worse sort, and she will feel the need to take you down a peg or two. I personally have never minded if a professor had strong views that they cared to express in class because those views were not typically used to grade student's work. Should you have differing thoughts or opinions from Dr. Nemoto and you are in retrospect dumb enough to express them when asked, you will find your grade suffering. The problem with this course is that it isn't really taught with an emphasis on sociological thought. The materials you read were written by authors who have lost their objectivity when writing about their topics. A large part of the reason that sociology does not get the credit that it deserves is because of people in the field like Nemoto who only see the world in (please forgive the pun) black and white and lack the ability to listen to appeal, logic, or reason. When told to provide support for an idea, I was naive enough to believe that three sources would be enough to at least justify a position. I was wrong. Perhaps the most ironic issue in the course was that we were introduced to critical thinking as though we had never used it before in course of our lives. We were told to use critical thinking and when we did against the views presented in the sources from the $80 non-refundable course packet, we were apparently wrong to do so. In the course you will be expected to given presentations at sometime. I say sometimes because you won't know when due to her unprecedented lack of organizational skills. My brother is autistic and he keeps it together better than she does. Not to mention that she doesn't have a real understanding of the resources available to her. For example, her use of blackboard is a joke. Grades are there, but nothing else like major course assignments, the syllabus, or the articles for class that cost $80 in the bookstore. So avoid this course if possible, I would recommend Social Inequality taught by Dr. Drummond if you are looking to take something centered on conflict theory.
