I am a sophomore with a 3.6 GPA. I took geography as a general ed because I was always really excellent at in in highschool. *EH* wrong. Apparently she thought I deserved an F. I attended every class except one on a sick day, did all the homework, read the key terms in the book and did everything I knew to do to at least get by with a B. This professor is the worst I've ever had. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE TAKE THIS CLASS. She is rude, she does not want you to pass, and she pulls questions for all her 4 tests and quizzes (every week) from absolutely NOWHERE. She is a complete joke. I wish I had read profeval on this woman before signing up for her class.

A lot of people have ragged on Dr. Algeo because she's absurdly difficult as a professor or she demands all of your time or she has horns or whatever. The fact of this class is IF YOU DO THE DAMN WORK YOU WILL GET A GOOD GRADE. It seems that some people don't think you should have to do a thing to get credit for it. This is college, people. You're supposed to actually put in the effort. And if you pay attention, the effort isn't so bad. I am getting a C in this class and you know what... I deserved it. I didn't do as much as I could have, and I am paying for it. I'm dealing. You deal too. It's not as bad as everyone else on here says... She's fair. That's it, and that's enough.

Dr. Algeo is very nice and helpful when asked. However, the class itself is extremely boring. As with any geography class, there are alot of notes. It's very difficult to stay engaged in the actual class discussions. The tests are the absolute worst part of this class. They cover a very broad array of topics and Dr. Algeo's questions are very vague. They always had questions about random facts that she may have mentioned once in class, even if it was not in the book or the notes.I could go on and on about how bad her tests are. I will say that any time I approached her about help, she was more than willing to do what she could. Great lady. Terrible class.

I give Dr. Algeo an ok review. I've read through some of the other reviews, and while I would not send her directly to Hell she is very difficult...if you don't do the work it takes to complete this class. Im a GIS minor and knew what I was getting into when I signed up for this class, but I will admit that she asks a lot of you and is very textbook driven with this course. Her grading scale is very confusing, and some assignments were miserable, but overall I learned a lot in this course. She was very helpful in feedback and able to meet with me when I needed help. Just prepare yourself before taking this class and come in with the mindset to work your butt off, but overall you should be fine if you take the time to do it!

Algeo is the worst teacher ever! Her lecture puts you to sleep in ten minutes! The test are super hard! I study for each of them and have yet to get a B. If it wasnt for extra credit(which is only worth 3 points) each time, i would have D's on all of them! The questions come from who knows where. She's a straight up jerk, when it comes to trying to talk to her! Even if your tardy to class your absent! This is the worst teacher ever at WKU! Will somebody please get her ass out of here!

Read this eval before you read the other, misleading ones. Dr. Algeo is not as bad as it seems. Yes, she is blunt and may be a smart***, but she really wants you to learn. Best advice... sit down, do the work, and make sure you understand what your doing. She makes herself available to answer question, but to answer them, you need to understand the concepts. There is a lot of work, but that is GIS and learning how to understand it. Hope this helps.

This class would be much better if she was not the teacher. She can't teach to save her life. She offers no help on any assignment and the only way to get answers is to keep asking the same question over and over. She should not be allowed to teach anything ever. If this is the last class you need before you graduate and she is the only teacher, you WILL NOT GRADUATE!

This was a very terrible class. She can't teach to save her life. She is the most worthless teacher that I have ever had at Western. Her attitude towards the students in class is pathetic, she shows no respect what so ever. She uses powerpoint to teach, which is useless adn the notes do not help you on the tests. Some assignments are cake yet others are so difficult that you don't know how to ask for help and if you get lucky enough to ask a question be prepared for a useless explaination. She is TERRIBLE!!!!! You will pull your hair out during class and you hope that death should find her ASAP. If the shuttle bus hit her I would not shed a tear.

This was the last upper division geography I had to take at WKU and geography is not my favorite field but I enjoyed this class. Dr. Algeo is very nice and very helpful and she talks about interesting subjects in her class so you never have to worry about being bored.
The major focus of the class is four projects that consist of 40% of your grade. She loves to do group work (and you don't get to pick your groups) so if you don't like that then this may not be the class for you. Our projects saw us go to Fountain Square for a landscape analysis, watch the movie Bend it Like Beckham for a film analysis, look through National Geographic for a picture analysis and practice different math models, and then administer a mental map survey which I thought was my favorite project.
You also have two tests, a midterm and final, each worth 15% of your grade. These tests have about six definitions where you have to define a term and provide an example, five short answers of about 4-6 sentences, and then a long essay at the end of the exam. To do well on the tests you need to study your notes (she uses PowerPoints and you can print them off ecourses but TAKE YOUR OWN NOTES, they help!) and read the chapters of the textbook. Personally, I thought the textbook was terrible and not very interesting but she will pull questions for the exam out of it so you need to read it. However, she provides study guides on ecourses for you to print off to help your studies and they are helpful (even if some of the questions really aren't in the book).
The rest of the grades just concern small quizzes, a few homework/in-class assignments, and your attendance/participation. If you have perfect attendance during the entire semester you get 2% added to your final grade SO GO TO CLASS EVEN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO! Besides that, your allowed to miss up to four classes before it starts to affect your grade.
Although I was intimidated by this class and was skeptical about whether I'd enjoy it, I found this class to one of the most interesting of the semester. Recommended for those trying to get geography credit for a social studies major or other studies.

As a graduating senior, I am advising everyone NOT to take a course taught by Dr. Algeo under ANY circumstances. Of all teachers I had here in 4 years at WKU, Algeo is by far the worst, by a long shot. She simply has no ability to teach, and requires her students to be masters of material they have never learned. I find it astounding that the department keeps her on the staff. She is an expert at alienating students. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! You WILL regret it.!

Dr. Algeo's lectures were powerpoint-based, and she made an effort to help all students understand the material. There are two tests, normalized to a bell curve, which took much longer than the class period. Most classes were dismissed more than ten minutes late. The homework load is extreme, many times with more assignments to turn in than class periods over the course of a week. The final week of class, 6 assignments were to be turned in (3 online quizzes, 1 lab, 1 in-class assignment, and 1 poster). Few assignments were given adequate time to finish, and most students spent an average of 10 hours per week on homework for the course.

What can I say about Dr. Algeo?
First, let me say that I am not a college student who is complaining because I actually had to do work in this class, like earlier posts mentioned in accordance to those who give Dr. Algeo a poor rating.
I am giving a poor rating because that is what she deserves.
She has a condescending attitude towards her students. She will ask you about the definition of a word she has not taught you yet, and that you do not know (hence why you are in the class to learn) and when you honestly do not know the answer she makes fun of you for living a sheltered life.
I have no idea where she comes up with the questions for the tests. It's not always from her notes or her book. And if you go off book definitions she will count you wrong on the test. She confuses me.
Her class infuriates me.
If you want a professor who will treat you like you’re dumb and your opinion does not matter, I urge you to take Algeo.

I will be a senior next fall at WKU and in the three years that Ive been here so far this is the worst class Ive ever had. I have received A's in every class at WKU except this one. For a 100 level class it is really shocking how extremely difficult the tests are. This class was worse than the 300 and 400 level classes that I have taken so far. All those ppl giving her a smiley face are really stupid if you ask me. Dont take this woman her tests questions are very random which makes studying for her tests that much more dufficult. DO NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

If you showed up, took the notes, and went through the definition in the book, you should be fine. Now, right off the bat I am going to tell you that I am one of the few people who liked her. She is hard in the fact that some of the information she wants you to know may seem to come from nowhere, but it is definitely either in the notes, lecture, or book. Tests count a lot, but there are regular quizzes and four projects, which can boost your grade. Plus, depending on your overall attendance you can get extra credit to your overall grade in the class. The book is only required in the sense that she takes a lot of material from it, but you don't use it in class. She's nice overall and knows her stuff, but she definitely expects you to do the work. I still recommend her though, because it may be a little tough, but I sure learned more out of that class than most of my others.

This class is horrible. The tests are very difficult. The projects that she assigns are pointless. One of the projects makes you go out into a neighborhood and take notes about what you see. I can't even imagine what this would be like in the late fall. It is also hard to figure out what you your current grade is during the semester. The notes that you have to take in class are not only what she puts on the board, but what she says verbally. I cannot stress enough, do not take Algeo for this class. She is the kind teacher that could scare a student that has not decided on a major away from geography.

This class is awful. If you have an opportunity to take Katie Algeo I reccommend that you burn every hair folicle on your body, so you can get somewhat of an idea the pain she will cause you. Her first test was awful, the class average was like a 61. one of the questions was "On a polynesian stick chart, shells represent blank". It was on one of the first few pages of the book and she said we wouldn't have to study that part. You don't know what to study for on the tests because she won't tell you what's important and what' not. We talked about the Amish for 2 days and never had a single question on the test. The projects are kind of hard, but the reason this class sucks isn't because of those. The reason the notes are overkill is because she doesn't test you on what's on the overhead, but also the things she talks about in great detail. She's very picky and her class is more frustrating than Christopher Reeve trying to do the hokey pokey. Not to knock Christopher Reeve, but I hope this gives you an idea of how bad this class is.

While this class is a 100 level course, expect to take notes and read a little from the book. Also, there are 4 projects that each count for 10% of your grade. They are pretty much easy unless you wait until the last minute to do them. One of the projects requires you to look at some houses and compare what you see to a previous project. But do it on a sunny day when the temp is just right and you'll be sure to pass with flying colors. For people looking for an easy A and an extra-credit-dispenser, don't come to this class you slacker. Go feel good about yourself in an art class.
