Marie Guthrie is a Nazi when it comes to grading papers. Her lectures are helpful but the way she grades papers makes it nearly impossible to get an A. I did extra credit, got an A on the final research paper, and I got an A on the annotated bibliography and still got a B. I even went to her for help and it still did nothing for my grade. Don't take her for English 300.

This should be a very easy class, but the teacher makes it nearly impossible to EARN an A. Marie Guthrie is a conceited, hypocritical, narcissistic sorry-excuse for a teacher. Did I say teacher? She didnt teach our class anything. She simply assigned papers (easy enough) and then refused to give appropriate grades on them. I worked my butt off on her final paper worth 40% of the overall grade, turned it in and checked blackboard a few days later and i had an A. Checked it again the next day and it had been changed to a B. I asked her for an explanation and never received one, only a reply saying to not be "huffy". Dont take her, you will regret it.

Dr. Guthrie has very liberal views on matters and believes in global warming (which has been a big subject matter in my class), so if you are not into all that, you might not enjoy this course much. The class is all based around roughly 7 papers-about 6 short papers and one power point that lead up to your 10 page paper due at the end of the semester. She's happy to help you revise your rough drafts. Overall, she's a nice and humorous lady (and quite outspoken).

Her tests and projects are really easy but her grading for papers is a whole different story. She tells you there is multiple view points to stories, poems, and etc. but unless you view it from HER view your not gonna make a good grade on the paper. Also if your a male avoid the class, because she is partial to women. I had a friend of mine who was a girl that took the class with me Guthrie wrote the same things on her paper as mine the result; she got a B I got a C. I personally don't advice guys to take her, girls go for it.

Horrible class. Her grading is not like any teacher I have had at wku I usually get at least B in English but I'll be lucky to pass this class. She is ok as a teacher. Her teaching is all over the place, she thinks she is the only smart person in the room. It's her way or no way.

I can't believe I never left a review about Dr. Guthrie. She was awesome. First and foremost, I am disappointed that I was never invited over to her crib to blaze up some of that hippie chron don I bet she has. She was way too cool of a professor. Don't let these goof balls make it sound like all she does is talk politics. I had her the fall of 2008 when Obummer was elected, which was a prime time and aside from the occasional political comment, which she always left open to humorous criticism, she kept to her material. This is coming from a semi-conservative Republican that gets tired of people that ramble on about their hippie liberal views all the time. She never took it to the point of being annoying, although it is very apparent which side she is on.
As for the class itself, I am very glad that I took this class. We all know Shakespeare and Othello is not going to be at the top of most people's reading lists for the fact that it is really hard to comprehend, which was a problem of mine. Ms. Guthrie understands this. She had a fun way of teaching us so that we could. One thing in particular was a hilarious video she showed us about Othello. Its those kinds of things that made some of the most complicated literature easier to learn.
The best advice I can give you is to show up to class, do what little work is asked of you, study what she tells you will be on the tests, and OPEN YOUR MOUTH. Things will be so much easier if you engage in her discussions about whatever. Trust me, I am not what you would call a "star student" and my GPA is barely at a 3.0, so if you're like me you are not exactly pumped to learn this stuff, but Guthrie makes it interesting. You can't avoid taking this class so you might as well make it halfway fun and take it with an upbeat and good professor like Guthrie. Thanks.

Warning! Dr. Guthrie loves to talk about her liberal views on politics and religion A LOT. Way too much for an Intro to Lit class. It gets very annoying and offensive at times. The class is easy you dont really need to read as she explains them and then "What it means to be Human." But bring your book to class. You have 3 assignments which she gives everyone an A on, 3 tests which are moderately easy, and 3 papers which she grades very tough. She takes attendance the first two weeks of class and then after that she takes attendance by surveying the class, so you can miss here and there. I hated this class because she would not shut the heck up about politics. Overall if you dont mind wacky professors who don't have a clue, then youll like Dr. Guthrie.
PS She is not afraid to drop the F bomb

Guthrie is the worst teacher I've ever had. She grades according to her opinion and if she doesn't agree with yours, you will fail your papers. When I went to ask her about my paper, she replied saying my thesis wasn't correct. Mostly because I stated that religion played a big part on what it means to be human, which she disagreed wholly on; I have no idea why because she's a damn preachers daughter. I asked her, "Isn't a thesis a statement that you provide basing your opinion with supporting context?" Her reply was no, it had to be FACTUAL. Isn't the point of a paper to prove your opinion and provide why you think something is the way it is. Apparently her definition was a statement that Marie Guthrie believes in. I got A's on all her test but It doesn't matter because her papers are 45% of the grade. She will discourage your opinions and bash on your papers if you are not the greatest writer, or if you are the greatest writer. Do not take her!

Dr. Guthrie is a Liberalist so if you don't like that type of teacher don't sign up for her class. There are no exams her writing assignments are your grade. She uses several books to teach you things. She used Kunstler's Long Emergency to give us a start for our first paper. You only have 2 7-10 page papers. A few little assignments like 2 Annotated Bibliographies, 2 Small Powerpoints over fallacies and such in another book Everything's An Argument. The Powerpoints are divided by people in the class and usually she lets you choose which topic you would like. Overall, this class is enjoyable! Guthrie wants you to voice your opinion and views in the class, but you've got to be willing to read and write to get an A. I definetly recommend to take her!

Guthrie is a decent teacher, but she is very bias when grading papers. If she disagrees with your thesis or opinion you WILL get at most a D on your papers, even if you have supporting context to prove you point. With the three papers being 45% of your grade you will have a difficult time achieving an A or B in the class. I have never been judged so harshly when writing a paper in ANY class I've ever taken. She gives you no guidelines in writing your papers, but if you don't write it the way she wants, you will not pass. If you choose to ask her about why you received the grade you did on your paper, she will come up with BS, at the same time become very aggravated. Her response will consist of you visiting the writing center which did absolutely nothing in helping me bring up my grade. About 75% of the people that I'm taking the class with are in the same situation. the other 25% being English majors or hand picked favorites. I have always been a proficient writer, and by taking this class she basically shit on all the self confidence I've developed in writing. Her test and projects are easy to receive an A on, but it doesn't matter due to her unfair grading on papers.

We never took any tests in this class. We wrote two medium research papers and a few small ones. As long as we came to class every day and showed our current work we did well. I didn't know that I could even write a research paper until I took this class with Ms. Guthrie. She is a little bit strange and wacky which I thought kept the class entertaining. I definitely recommend this teacher to anyone.

Dr. Guthrie is a fun teacher to take English Literature with because she makes it relate to our lives. Her tests are realitively easy if you read the assigned material. You have three tests, three projects and three (3 page) papers. You will cover drama, poetry and short stories. She curses a lot so beware of that. Our final for the class counted as the last test (which was on poetry) and it was a "take-home" final. I would definitely recommend taking this class with Dr. Guthrie.

Ms. Guthrie is crazy, but in a kinda weird kooky grandmother way. She gives very fair grades and lets you write your 3 papers and do your 3 projects on whatever you want. I missed class all the time and still made an A in the class. She assigns readings and then discusses them in class so you don't even have to read them. The test are semi-hard and you have to at least know something about the readings to pass them. She mostly talks, not lectures, in class and will kinda freak you out if you keep eye contact with her for to long. She mostly rambles about the stories and then talks the rest of the time about when she was in the peace core, she is a different kind of teacher but pretty cool.

Even though this class was so simple compared to my last english IV AP back in highschool, it was still interesting. Dr. Guthrie is extremely entertaining to listen too, and she is fun to have in class. The tests are so simple my 11 year old sister could pass them with an A, and extra-credit is offered out the wazoo, so grades really aren't a problem, unless you try to fail. Yea, she can get kinda preachy about her personal and political views on everything, but it's nothing I haven't heard from every other professor I have. All in all, this class is simple, easy, and should be taken if you want an easy A.

Dr. Guthrie was an excellent professor that I recommend to anyone taking any English course. Rather than have us simply read stories and write reviews or what not, she got you thinking about the stories, the timeframe, the author and anything else that might be relevent. She made the stories mean something to your everyday life. Often times I found myself finishing a story and thinking "Ok, but so what?", only to go to class the next day, and after hearing her speak realize what a powerful piece it truely was. If you want to take an easy class that you will walk away from feeling enriched....Dr. Guthrie is the professor you should take.

TAKE DR. GUTHRIE! Many reviews tell of how easy the class is and no it's no hard at all. But Dr. Guthrie is an exceptional professor that anyone should take. She selected excellent stories and we always went through them and she put you in the time and really made you understand what the author was saying. And it's ok not to like something you read. In fact I think she rather enjoys hearing it as long as you can support your opinion. Truely a first rate professor.

I loved Dr. Guthrie! This class was extremely easy. We discussed all the material in class, and she basically gives you every answer to the exams during the review class period before the test. Just pay attention and write down the examples she gives because they will show up on the exams.
If you go to a play or poetry reading during the semester, you can write a one page response, and she will give you extra credit. (she was actually a theatre major)
Dr. Guthrie is extremely nice and will help you in any way she can. You can say anything in her class, and she wants to hear your opinions. I highly recommend her.

Dr. Guthrie was a difficult professor. I have always been confident in my writing however upon taking this course I doubted myself often. She would tell me that I was doing fine with my paper and then I would get a C. At the beginning of the semester she talks a lot about the Writing Center and how you are almost garunteed an A if you go. I went because I thought it would help. The grad student there looked at my paper, said it looked great, and Dr. Guthrie gave me a C. She talks about religion a lot because her father was a pastor, but she also focused on evolution too often--which had nothing to do with this class!! So if you like that kind of stuff along with Star Wars, the moon, women's lib, or the Peace Corp you should be fine! The last two months we did nothing but peer review our papers which made it hard to attend class-good luck if you take her.

I really didn't like Dr. Guthrie!! She is very liberal and voices her opinions entirely too much! I am conservative--but regardless of that she is very offensive to other peoples opinions. If she doesn't like you she won't care about helping you. She doesn't offer good constructive criticism. If you ask her for advice there is never a straight forward answer but a bunch of blah blah blah! Besides my personal feelings towards her, as a teacher she didn't teach us a lot! Papers were always very late getting returned. And she grades very hard! I got an A by the skin of my teeth and I am a 4.0 student! When I wrote an opinion based paper with a conservative view, all she wrote was poor argument C! I think she meant wrong point of view!!
